A woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her 11-year-old son and burying him in a shallow grave near Monsterlus in Limpopo, police said on Wednesday.

Residents of Hlalanikhale village suspected the 28-year-old woman of being behind her son's disappearance and attacked her, said Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

She had to be rescued by police and was then arrested on Tuesday.

"Police investigations led them to the spot in the yard [of their rented home] where the lifeless body of the child was found buried in a shallow grave."

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba condemned the incident.

The motive for the crime was not immediately clear.

The mother was expected to appear in Hlogotlou Magistrate's Court soon.
