Mbombela - A woman collapsed and died after a man was shot dead, allegedly by a loan shark, in the Mbombela CBD on Thursday morning.

Shoppers were shocked when the woman, who was thought to be between the ages of 26 and 30, collapsed following a shootout between a man and a loan shark in Mbombela's Promenade shopping mall.

"We can confirm that there are two scenes at the Promenade: A woman has collapsed not far from the shootout scene and confirmed dead after a man was shot by another man in the same area," said provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Gerald Sedibe.

Sedibe said they could not confirm yet if the deceased was related to the man who was shot.

An eyewitness, Thobile Mandlazi, said the deceased, who was shot, and another man were exchanging words about money. The shooter had allegedly demanded money from the victim.

"The misunderstanding went to another level and they started fighting and before we knew it, gunshots were heard at the scene.

"The deceased was then heard screaming before she collapsed," said Mandlazi.
