Johannesburg - An elderly woman was critically wounded at a shopping centre in Kempton Park when she was robbed of cash on Friday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said it was understood that she had just drawn cash to pay her employees when she was accosted and shot several times.

The woman is believed to be in her late 60s.

"When Netcare911 paramedics arrived on scene, we found the woman lying next to her vehicle. While assessing her, paramedics found that she was in a critical condition."

She had sustained mutliple gunshot wounds.

The woman was airlifted to hospital.

The shopping centre is on Quintus van der Walt Avenue in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg.
