Johannesburg – A woman was killed in an accident on the N17 in Springs on Friday afternoon, believed to have been caused by a veld fire, paramedics said.

Several motorists were injured in a chain of collisions on both sides of the highway, Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said.

The Netcare 911 helicopter was dispatched to the scene while the 48-year-old woman was still trapped in her bakkie. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free her.

She succumbed to her injuries while paramedics tried to resuscitate her.

On each side of the road, roughly several hundred meters apart, there were accidents involving about 20 vehicles.
