2016-11-13 14:21

Mthatha - A 65-year-old woman died in a house fire after neighbours in her village failed to quell the blaze, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

"A local man saw the house of the deceased in flames on Friday at about 13:30. Community members came in huge numbers to help extinguish the fire.

"Sadly it was too late as the deceased died in her house," spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The cause of the fire was not clear, however an inquest docket was opened. The woman was identified as Nongamile Deyi, who resided in Deyi Location in Ngquthu Village near Kei Bridge, Butterworth.

On Saturday, in a separate incident, two men aged 20 and 22 were arrested for the murder of a 27-year-old Zuthile Sigwayi who was stabbed to death in Dutywa.

"The deceased was stabbed on his upper body by the two suspects on Saturday 12 November 2016 at about 02:00 at Dutywa town," Manatha said.

The motive for the stabbing was unclear. The two were expected to appear in the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Monday on a murder charge.
