Pietermaritzburg - A woman died and two others were seriously injured when a number of large bags of animal feed fell on them at a Howick industrial park on Wednesday afternoon.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak in a statement said when their paramedics arrived at the scene at 13:45, other emergency services personnel and security guards had already moved several bags to reach the trio.

"One of the women was in a critical condition. She had sustained severe chest and head injuries," he said.

"While paramedics were busy treating her, her condition rapidly deteriorated and she went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics performed CPR for almost an hour but were unable to revive her."

The woman was later declared dead on the scene.

"The other two women sustained serious injuries. Both of them were treated for multiple chest and possible internal injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital by another ambulance service."

Vermaak said while the exact details surrounding the incident were not yet clear, it is believed that the women had been offloading some of the bags when they fell on them.

Police are investigating.
