Potchefstroom - A woman was killed and six other people injured in a head-on collision between a car and a bakkie on the R501 near Potchefstroom on Monday morning, paramedics said.

When paramedics arrived on the scene they found the bakkie lying on its roof and car upright on the side of the road, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

It was evident that the car had rolled multiple times, he said.

The woman's lifeless body was lying next to the car.

"Unfortunately the woman had already succumbed to her injuries after she was ejected from the vehicle," said Meiring.

"Six other patients were found lying around the light motor vehicle, one of the patients, a man, lay critically injured."

The man was airlifted to Mediclinic Sandton for urgent treatment.

The remaining five injured people were transported to various facilities.
