Durban - Police are investigating a case of rape that happened in Umhlanga's upmarket entertainment district in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said that a woman was raped after leaving a restaurant around 02:00.

"At approximately 02:00, a 35-year-old victim was at the restaurant and when she went out for a walk, she was grabbed by an unknown suspect," she said.

Gwala said that the woman was pushed into an alley and raped.

"The suspect raped her and fled the scene on foot. No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing," she said.

The plush district, with a vibrant nightlife, is part of the Umhlanga Urban Improvement Project. One of the areas’ hallmarks is heightened security.

UIP operations manager Dewet Geldenhuys told News24 that he only found out about the case on Wednesday, and referred all queries to the police.
