A long-haul flight from New York to Johannesburg turned into a happy experience for a mother when an air hostess took it upon herself to hush her baby.

Kate Whalley-Hands, a South African living in Canada, shared a post on Facebook of her special experience on a South African Airways flight.

“A 15-hour flight (between two transits) is never an easy task for a parent travelling on their own to undertake,” Kate wrote on Facebook.

“I had a massively ‘proud to be South African’ moment yesterday when Mavis (on my flight from New York to Johannesburg) took Imogen [her baby] out of my arms and baleta’d her [put the baby on her back], and then carried on serving people so I was able to eat my meal.

“Fifteen minutes later she returned to my seat with a fast-asleep Immy. Mavis, thank you for being a rock star. I appreciate you.”

Kate’s post was widely shared and elicited a stream of positive comments. A few people criticised her for expecting the hostess to take on even more work, but the majority felt it was a perfect story for Freedom Day.
