Cape Town - A woman and a teenager were killed in a fire in a house in Bonteheuwel on Monday night, the City of Cape Town's fire and rescue services said.

The remains of the 53-year-old and a 16-year-old girl were found in the Soetdoring Street house at 23:00, spokesperson Theo Layne said on Tuesday.

Shocked neighbours still dressed in their pyjamas stood in the street on Tuesday morning as police investigated the deaths.

Layne said the blaze was limited to the back room of the house. It burnt itself out. When firefighters arrived there was much smoke in the back room, and water and heat damage to the rest of the house.

They remained at the scene for about an hour to ensure the flames were entirely extinguished.

Layne could not confirm if the two, who appeared to be related, had been sleeping at the time of the blaze.

No other injuries were reported.
