Johannesburg – A worker at Die Fakkel High School in Forest Hill, south of Johannesburg, was shot and killed by burglars on Monday morning.

Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the school's caretaker, who lives on the school's premises, heard suspicious noises and ran to get help from a general assistant who lives close to the school.

"The two men came back to the school and patrolled the area. When they confronted robbers, the general assistant was sadly shot dead".

Mabona said the robbers fled with four computers and a television set.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi sent his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and the school.

He said it was unfortunate that such an incident had taken place "in our school".

The department was providing the necessary support and counselling to the man's family, the school's employees, including educators, and pupils, he said.

Police did not immediately have information about the incident.
