Cape Town - A 50-year-old man was expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday following the attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in Samora Machel, police said.

He was arrested on Tuesday following the attack on Sunday, Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi said.

She was asleep in a bedroom of her home.

"When she woke up, the suspect was on top of her. She ran and informed her sister," Sitshitshi said.

A case of attempted rape was opened. Locals assaulted him before he was arrested.

A 21-year-old man would appear in the same court on Wednesday morning on charges of rape and assault, following an attack in Crossroads.

"The victim and her cousin were leaving a party at midnight on Monday when the suspect approached them and forcefully dragged the victim to his home," Sitshitshi said.

"When they arrived, the woman called for help and managed to flee, but the suspect caught up with her, assaulted her and took her to his house where he raped her."

Before the rape, the man allegedly assaulted two people who had tried to help her.

He was arrested on Tuesday night.
