Pretoria - The daughter of struggle icon Chief Albert Luthuli says leaders must have values and ethics, making it easy for people to trust them.

"You must look at your past and say we have many examples of people who had values... to get us to where we are. Good values and determination about what you want to do in life as a whole cannot change," Dr Albertinah Luthuli said during a round-table discussion on building a humanitarian public service.

"They are not like clothes that you wear, they are not like fashion. They take a people forward and they are there all the time."

Luthuli spoke highly of the leaders of her generation and those who had come before. She said they embodied values and ethics which were held in high regard by those they were leading. She said they had a vision.

"To a large extent, they set us on the right road because they were clear about where things should go. They were clear that this country is wrong and it should go this way and they stuck to that. They put the parameters clearly about how they would get there, what kind of people needed to be there. I’m talking about leadership," she said.

She said those qualities made it easy for people to trust them and allowed them to lead from the front.

"People had trust in them that they are people of good values, ethics and all those kind of things, and people could trust them. They would stick by what they said," she said.

Luthuli also spoke about the importance of education. She said, despite challenges and hurdles on the path towards achieving academic qualifications, perseverance and tenacity shaped people into good leaders.

She added that the tough road and obstacles helped to build and instill values and ethics in those who persevere.

"Do the best you can when it comes to education. Go to the top level, nothing will stop you. We need that, the country needs that.

"Values are not a subject, it’s not that you’re taught, it just happens when you go through that journey that you get ethics and things like that. At the end of the day nobody needs to tell you that it is unethical behaviour, you know it. You know that wrong has consequences," she said.
