Young South Africans are biggest victims of assault - Stats SA

Cape Town – According to a Statistics SA report highlighting some of the concerns, challenges and successes of youth in SA, young people between 16 and 34 were twice as likely to have experienced assault and robbery crimes than those in older and younger groups.

- 16-24 year olds were most likely to be victims of assault and property theft crime;

- 25-34 year olds were most likely to fall victim to robbery;

- Young people constituted the majority of both victims and perpetrators of crime.

In terms of how the youth spent their time, the report, which was released on Monday, found that most spent their leisure time watching TV, socialising, watching sports and attending exhibitions or concerts.

- Males between the ages of 15 and 34 spent an average of 173 minutes per day watching TV, and women 163 minutes.

- Men spent 152 minutes per day socialising, and women 130 minutes.

- Men spent 145 minutes daily watching sports or attending exhibitions and concerts, while women spent 116 minutes at cultural activities like weddings.
