Johannesburg - Minister of Water Affairs and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane says the youth of today must define themselves by fighting for economic freedom.

"It must be about economic Freedom because they now have the political freedom, the right to vote," Mokonyane said on Thursday.

"They must now have the skills to run the country, they must have the skills to manage the economy."

Mokonyane was among the many ministers attending the National Youth Day celebrations at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Thursday.

She called on the youth not to rely on companies to employ them but to carve their own niche and become employers themselves.

"They must now have skills not to be labourers but those who create job opportunities," she said.
