Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma decided that PAC leader Philip Ata Kgosana, who died this week, will be honoured with an official funeral, the Presidency said on Sunday.

"President Jacob Zuma has declared a Special Provincial Official Funeral for the late Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) stalwart, freedom fighter and former Tshwane Metropolitan municipality councillor," said the Presidency's Dr Bongani Ngqulunga in a statement.

"The President once again extends his heartfelt condolences to the Kgosana family and his political home, the Pan Africanist Congress."

Further details about the funeral would be communicated by the Gauteng Provincial Government.

Kgosana died at the age of 80 on Thursday.

In 1960, he led a 30 000-strong march against pass laws, from Langa to Cape Town.

"He devoted his entire life to the liberation struggle and served in various leadership roles in the PAC while studying at the University of Cape Town," the Presidency said.

When various political organisations were banned by the apartheid government, Kgosana fled to Ethiopia.

"On his return from exile, he served the PAC and remained in the service [of] the people until his death," said Ngqulunga.
