Zuma arrives in Iran

2016-04-24 10:41

Pretoria  President Jacob Zuma has arrived in Iran for a state visit, the Presidency said on Sunday.

“This is the second South African state visit to Iran, the first having been undertaken by President Nelson Mandela in 1999,” said spokesperson, Bongani Majola, in a statement.

“The President's state visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran will serve to cement the strong fraternal relations between the two countries that originated during the apartheid era when Iran refused to oil the apartheid machinery and instead cut ties with apartheid South Africa,” said Majola.

“In addition, the lifting of nuclear-related sanctions against Iran provides immense potential for closer commercial and investment co-operation between South Africa and Iran,” he said.

Zuma is accompanied by Deputy Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Nomaindia Mfeketo, Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies, Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Energy Tina Joemat-Pettersson, Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane, and Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel as well as a business delegation.
