Cape Town – President Jacob Zuma has congratulated National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete on receiving the Martin Luther King Legacy Award for International Service.

The African National Congress chairperson and speaker of Parliament received the award in Washington on Sunday.

Mbete was honoured for four decades of service, specifically regarding women's issues.

Zuma said the award was not only about recognising her distinguished service to the nation.

"It is also an affirmation of the calibre of leadership that South Africa has always and continues to offer to the global community," the president said in a statement.

The Annual International Salute of the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr has been held annually since 1992.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the International Salute.
