Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma extended condolences to Cuba from the people of South Africa after the death of liberation hero Fidel Castro, International Relations spokesperson Clayson Monyela said.

''It is devastating, absolutely devastating,'' said Monyela after the 90-year-old former Cuban president's death on Friday night.

''President Jacob Zuma has already made contact with the president of Cuba, Raul Castro, to send sincere and heartfelt condolences on behalf of South Africa.

''The role Castro played in our struggle for liberation is immeasurable,'' he said.

''We are standing with the people of Cuba at this difficult time.''
