Cape Town – President Jacob Zuma on Monday sent his "deepest condolences" following the deaths of over 100 people in an explosion and fire at a temple in India.

At least 108 people were killed and hundreds injured at the Puttingal Devi Temple in Paravul, in the state of Kerala, in southern India, on Sunday.

"Our thoughts are with the people of India in the aftermath of the catastrophic explosion and blaze at the Puttingal Devi Temple in Kerala State," Zuma said in a statement.

The fire broke out during a fireworks display, which was part of a celebration to mark the Hindu new year.

"On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, I send my deepest condolences to the Government of India and to everyone affected, particularly to the families and friends of those killed and injured in the explosion at the temple." Zuma.
