Cape Town – President Jacob Zuma wished Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu a happy 85th birthday on Friday.

"Archbishop Emeritus Tutu has contributed immensely to the freedom and democratic dispensation we achieved as a country. He continues to inspire the nation and the world in the promotion of human rights, justice and the wellbeing of all, especially the poor," Zuma said in a statement.

"We wish him a joyful birthday, good health and comfort and urge the nation to keep him and his family in their thoughts and prayers."

Tutu was discharged from hospital last month. He was admitted only days after previously being discharged following a surgery.

"The Arch" underwent the surgical procedure to address the cause of recurring infections resulting from past treatment received for prostate cancer.
