Johannesburg - The Australian television network which on Sunday broadcast footage of Oscar Pistorius re-enacting the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, also broadcast an interview with Steenkamp's parents.

Beeld reported on Monday that Barry and June Steenkamp were interviewed as part of the Sunday Night documentary programme.

June Steenkamp told the network that she last spoke to her daughter Reeva on the night of 13 February - hours before she was killed - and that Reeva was happy. She was even smiling in the security footage of her driving into the complex where the fatal shooting took place.

Despite this, the Steenkamps said they believed the couple had a rocky relationship, and were unconvinced by Pistorius's version of events. They added the relationship was too young for them to have been fighting.

June Steenkamp questioned why Pistorius shot her, and how Reeva could have ended up with a person like that.

Fateful call

She also recounted how she got a phone call at 07:00 in the morning to tell her there had been an accident and Reeva had been shot. She asked the caller to tell her if Reeva was dead or alive, and he told her she was dead. She then asked what happened, and the man said there was Oscar, a gun, and her daughter.

On Monday, the television network defended its decision to broadcast the video of Pistorius re-enacting the fatal shooting, saying it was not obtained illegally.

Meanwhile, June Steenkamp told City Press that she is glad the end of the trial is in sight and she is eager to put it behind her and return to her normal life in Port Elizabeth.

City Press also reported that prosecutor Gerrie Nel is regarded as the family's hero.
