12 cows slaughtered in Zuma ritual

2012-11-26 11:37

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma's family killed 12 cows in a ritual believed to be aimed at extending his tenure ahead of the ANC's national elective conference in Mangaung, according to a report on Monday.

The Star reported that the family held the ritual at his Nkandla residence on Sunday to commune with Zuma's ancestors.

Although no other African National Congress leaders were seen at the event, Zuma joined Zulu warriors in traditional dances as thousands of his relatives prayed for him to retain his position of ANC president.

Zuma was reportedly given a shield and spear to defend himself from other contenders for the ANC's top position.

In the wake of a public outcry over allegations that Zuma spent R250m in taxpayers' money on renovating his private home at Nkandla, he is expected to be challenged by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Zuma's son Edward told police and security personnel to expel the media towards the end of the celebrations.

A reporter for The Mercury was apparently manhandled off the premises by police.

Should have slaughtered 100! We should not upset ancestors with meagre offerings!

      UncleShep - 2012-11-26 11:47

      peter.ndamase - 2012-11-26 12:05

So if he loses to Motlanthe, does that mean the ancestors turn their back on him!!! Interesting belief.

I thought he only had 4

      boltonbarry - 2012-11-26 12:10

I would actually prefer that his ancestors haunt him

      merven.halo - 2012-11-26 12:14

There is a reason why Africa will ALWAYS be a third world continent. Slaughtering cows for the forefathers? It is like the Europeans did more than a thousand years ago!

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-26 12:18

Is there any evidence that sacrifice's to ancestors does ANYTHING to change certain situations? I know it is cultural, and that is fine for tradition. But these sacrifices don't do anything...

      suash - 2012-11-26 12:20

Oh look it's dodo again. I hope Zuma's ancestors make him suffer for stealing from the poor.

      amanda.vandenberg.758 - 2012-11-26 12:40

OMG, I wonder if he councils with the forefathers before any major decision is taken politically, watch out for the rabbit!

      marc.ross.965 - 2012-11-26 12:46

Zuma should join his ancestors not praise them.

      mike.boylen - 2012-11-27 02:19

@themba.thwala.775. I was pointing out how the rest of the world now views SA. Name calling is not going to change the world's perception of you. If anything it will only reinforce how backward they think you are. You can either be African or you can take your place in the modern world. You can't choose the parts of Western civilisation you want whilst clinging to primitive superstition and expect to be taken seriously.

      Nicholas.Spaggiari - 2012-11-27 12:24

They should slaughter 12 zumas for one cow instead. Why do they always have it backwards?

      heathway.master - 2012-11-27 13:19

If anyone saw the pictures, here is our honourable president dressed in cowhide, brandishing a spear and shield, and dancing for all his worth. Surely this is not the image he wants to portray of himself to the rest of the world. Imagine Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Tony Blair, putting on the same show. Mandela and Mbeki never engaged in such Pagan rituals, involving ceremonial sacrifices and calling to the long passed away ancestors. I know this is a fairly wide spread African Custom, but should it really be part of a twentieth century culture. It was practised centuries ago especially in the jungles of Borneo, and the Amazon Rainforests. To me personally this is extremely embarrassing behaviour from a President in 2012. We must be the complete laughing stock of the civilised world. People no longer living in grass and mud huts, with a few miserable mielies growing close to the reed front door, should have by now abandoned such primitive ceremonies.

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-11-27 13:58

Even more are praying to God that zoomer isnt re elected. So your ancestors have got no chance!

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-11-27 14:05

Zuma is a Zulu... don't know why so many Xhosa people are voting for him. Do you know what Shaka Zulu did to the Xhosa's. Zuma is doing exactly the same... He is just more sneaky and underhanded, because he cannot go around just killing everyone who stands in his way! All people of all colour who want this country to be the Rainbow Nation that Madiba The Great had envisioned, we need to all stand together and make a stand now before it's too late! Any ideas how to get a united stand going in this magnitude?

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-11-27 14:40

Joe Farmer, loved your comment, just what I thought when i read the headlines LOL, I thought for a minute I'd missed the news and he shacked up with 8 more.

      emmi.nyathi - 2012-11-27 15:15

It's quite alarming to witness that when a reader/subscriber of news24 like dave de jager calls us, black Africans, "a stupid race", that his racially abusive comment gets more "thumbs ups" than "thumbs downs" and more so in knowing that the majority of people who post comments on this are white! Honestly, I would be lying if I said such a comment is foreign to me, especially when I retrospectively reflect on my 12years of schooling at former model C/racially segregated schools, where it was clear as daylight that our respective African Culture's are viewed in the same light as a sort of circus show. Granted, there are a lot of challenges that we are currently facing as a nation but to call us a stupid race, and even worse, to being congratulated/praised for that, clearly highlights that we Africans are still not respected by the minority and that the day we will get our deserved respect will probably never come to fruition. Africans we need to hold on to who we are, our traditional weddings are a thing of beauty, iLobolo is not "selling your child" as people with a limited thinking capacity say, ukuhlabela aba phansi is not idiotic, let's not forsake our traditions, our cultures, our values and in doing so, our souls, we are Africans and we are proud of who we are!

      phuti.magolo - 2012-11-27 16:07

Chilli. Resorting to tribalism like your apartheid heroes, I see... Since we remembering past deeds, why don't we go ahead and remember what the boeres did to us with their stupid apartheid laws. There can only be one president at the time and he or she will belong to one of the tribes. So now the other tribes should fight against that tribe? Until when... Until there's only boeres left in SA! You are crazy and you need to have your head checked!

Where can I stand to see people laughing at SA?

  • lebona.boitumelo - 2012-11-26 13:24

    and this is breaking news?????

  • djmain1 - 2012-11-26 13:25

Poor cows died in vain. Phantsi cANCer, pahntsi!!!

  • monique.jackson0 - 2012-11-26 13:26

Hahahahaha! Zuma can slaughter ALL the cows in SA! Its NOT going to help him! I think it's rather hillarious that he reckons he's even worth 12 cows. Poor things. Don't go feed a village or anything.......

  • rse.biscuits - 2012-11-26 13:28

Could they not slaughter 12 ANC MEPs ? Or more perhaps ...

  • Michael - 2012-11-26 13:28

Wow! Just wow! The sitting PRESIDENT of our country thinks that slaughtering some animals will get him another term. He really is f-ing stupid, and not fit for office. In order to "apply one's mind" as he puts it, you have to have one that functions to start with.

      yuri.buccaneer - 2012-11-27 17:43

He has been slaughtering cows all his life, and look where he is now. There are people who believe that getting jobs/promotion at work is a blessing from their god. What do you think stops zuma from enjoying the same privileges from his ancestors?

      solo.mathe.5 - 2012-11-27 23:21

Now that 'Michael' has said it, then it must be true... Because we all know that white is right! What are you doing in Africa if you don't understand Africans?

      vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-11-28 00:36

      Michael is a racist.

  • ardenharvey - 2012-11-26 13:29

I respect the culture...wholeheartedly. But I don't respect your lying, thieving and greedy ways JZ...good should consider turning some of that beef into biltong...because you are going to need to store up some reserves for when the "times" arent so plentiful(like us meager South African's), hard working tax slaves.*cough..I mean payers...

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-11-26 13:30

Zuma has already given himself a bad reputation and he can kill as many cows as he likes it wont wash away what he is. Zuma lives in two worlds, runs to his culcha when it suits him but he cannot do away the trappings of the western world. Same as a snake born with two heads.

  • harley.mills.129 - 2012-11-26 13:39

Come on, give him a break! Think of how many mothers-in-law he has to deal with... LOL

      ardenharvey - 2012-11-26 13:42

      LOL...indeed! shame..lets give him a break :)
