Durban - The government redistributed 82 million hectares of white-owned agricultural land in South Africa between 1994 and March 2015, and more than 50 000 of the beneficiaries are women.

The ANC’s National General Council 2015 discussions documents on rural development and land reform revealed that 45 555 995 hectares under land redistribution, through 5 184 projects, have benefited 235 609 beneficiaries.

Of these, 50 882 are women, 33 108 are youth and 678 are people living with disabilities.

Information contained in the Land Tenure System also addresses land owned by foreign nationals, stating that no foreign nationals may own land, but instead be allowed long term leases.

This reiterated President Jacob Zuma’s announcement in his State of the Nation address that a bill in this regard will be submitted this year.

The discussion document states the prohibition of ownership of agricultural land by foreign nationals must be introduced and long term leases to be held by foreigners can be up to 30 years.
