Johannesburg - The ANC and IFP are calling on residents of Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal to vote in their numbers in the upcoming by-elections.

The ANC said on Tuesday it was encouraged by the support it had received in the area and was optimistic this would translate into a win.

"The people of Nongoma have in the past few months warmly welcomed our movement. We have welcomed thousands of people from different political parties and we have gained dominant presence in every corner of Nongoma," provincial spokesperson Senzo Mkhize said in a statement.

The IFP remained confident of retaining its power.

"It's all going to be decided tomorrow. You need to do everything in your power to get to the polling stations and vote... The IFP has confidence that the seats you gave to the IFP will remain in the IFP," deputy chair Albert Mncwango said in a statement.

Wards Five, 10 and 11 were being contested.

Previously, IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi accused the ANC of trying to buy votes in the area, especially in Ward 5, by distributing food parcels, fences, and irrigation systems.

Mkhize denied the allegations, and said it was "effectively giving people what already belonged to them".
