Durban – The ANC says it remains committed to fighting for the protection of farm worker’s rights.

The party made this clear in its National General Council 2015 discussion documents on rural development and land reform, referring to a resolution it took at its 52nd conference that farm workers’ rights were a priority.

The government said it would combat the abuse of human rights and super-exploitation of farm workers and provide support and advice to communities living on farms.

Vigorous laws that will protect farm workers and dwellers will also be implemented. The government has also promised to review and strengthen legislation that will put the interests of workers first.

It admitted that it had faced challenges in trying to deal with the problem, the absence of active voices in local structures being the main obstacle.

The party announced that the amendment of the Extension of the Security Tenure Act, a bill against farming evictions, would be finalised.

The bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament by September 2015.
