ANC apologises to media

2012-06-27 19:31

Johannesburg - The ANC apologised to the media on Wednesday over the confiscation of accreditation tags at the party's policy conference.

"Let me... apologise on behalf of the ANC about some of the mishaps that happened [to journalists]," national executive committee member Jeff Radebe told reporters in Midrand.

"We have taken steps to ensure it doesn't happen again."

He said it was not African National Congress policy to deal with the media in such a manner.

ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza told reporters earlier in the day they had to stay away from the Gallagher Estate conference hall while commissions were sitting.

Reporters were only allowed to speak to delegates during tea and lunch breaks.

During the lunch break, police walked up to reporters and photographers from various media houses and confiscated their accreditation tags.

A Sapa photographer's tag was confiscated, and photographers from the Daily Sun and Mail&Guardian had their cameras taken away.

Spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said the cameras and tags had been returned.

However several photographers said their cameras were returned to them with photos of delegates deleted.

Mthembu said security officials often behaved contrary to the party's instructions.

"Security is security. Even the ANC security does things that amaze us," Mthembu said.

"We would like to add to the apology that comrade Jeff made, that comes from our deepest hearts."

Something doesn't quite add up here. I am trying to figure out what this is about. I mean, when has the ANC APPOLOGISED for anything? Why now all of a sudden?

      john.nel.927 - 2012-06-28 13:53

Note: It wasn't private security guards that confiscated cameras, it was the SAP! Was a crime committed? No, the SAP is simply an extension of the ANC regime and abusing their powers to serve and protect the nation, not the ANC

  • tshivhombelaf - 2012-06-27 20:08

Who is fooling who? This implies that the party is morally barren and through metamorphosis the party is quickly becoming Z(ANC)U.

If you speak to educated Zimbos, they will tell you all the political signs is the same in South Africa as what they experienced in Zim. The even warned us about the problems we as a nation are going to face with the Anc.

You cannot compare SA to Zimbabwe, realistically. There were 17 consecutive quarters of economic growth post 1994 until the 2008 global downswing; According to the Open Budget Index 2010, South Africa has the most transparent budget in the world; South Africa ranks 28th out of 167 countries surveyed in the 2011 Democracy Index, compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, ahead of France, Italy, Greece and all of the other BRICS countries; ranks South Africa as the 43rd most democratic country in 2011; In the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Survey of Democratic Freedom, South Africa ranks 31st out of 184 countries; According to the Global Competitiveness Report 2010/11, South Africa has the 34th most efficient government out of the 139 countries ranked; ranks South Africa as the 47th least corrupt nation out of 150 nations surveyed in 2011, ahead of Italy, Greece and all the other BRICS nations; Transparency International ranks South Africa 64th out of 150 countries in its corruption perception index 2011; South Africa ranks as the 61st strongest state out of 177 countries in the Fund for Peace's Failed State Index 2011. The index measures state vulnerability based on 12 social, economic, political and military indicators. Those are the facts....

"During the lunch break, police walked up to reporters and photographers from various media houses and confiscated their accreditation tags." AND "...Even the ANC security does things that amaze us," Mthembu said." So, now we know at least that the SAPS are the official security arm of the ANC and that realization although not surprising as we know having followed the Mdluli, Cele and Selebi sagas, gives me the cold shivers. Talk about 'alien tendencies': This is Chinese Communism and Marxism and dictatorial ANC rule combined into one of the most obnoxious and repulsive admissions that this inebriated mind of Mthembu could have made. We all should be abhorred and repulsed - This is not what we voted for in 1992/1994!

  • bernard.herbert.9 - 2012-06-27 20:25

How about apologizing to those who voted for you for failing them miserably, and even more so those who didn't vote for you, who have UNISA qualifications, multiple Microsoft Certifications, vast experience and cannot get a job, because they are white, male and over 40 (served in the SADF)... we didn't vote for you, why must we suffer from your BEE crap. I never made Apartheid, never supported it, check the records I never once voted before '94, why take it out on us? Bastards, I hope you rot in the same place Mugape finally does!

      Cordeliah - 2012-06-27 20:42

You're right why cant we reconcile and stop blaming others? the youth of today know nothing about apartheid because they dont have any experience what so ever...if people who suffered can forgive why cant we?and we as south africans regardless of race or whatever we must get equal opportunities...the legislations were introduced what for cause the same black people who are being assisted through the BEE dont deliver quality products.why cant we talk about the white economic empowernment now because it seems like our country has neglected whites

      keith.f.murphy - 2012-06-27 22:47

But before the white settlers stepped on s.a soil apartheid existed which these idoits have created long before the white man arrive. The white man saw what they doing and they just did the same as the saying goes when you in rome do what the romens do.Poepsak

      Richard - 2012-06-28 11:12

During the 1980's any white South African traveling overseas was a paraiah. You had to hang your head in shame at customs at any international airport when presenting your passports; Today, you have modern infrastructure (Jhb International, for example was a dump), modern multi-lane roads. SA boasted 17 consecutive quarters of economic growth post-1994 before the 2008 economic downturn, re-admission to international sport and business, stable interest rates, conservative fiscal policy, The NCA which forced the banking sector to curb credit, low ratio of govt debt and excellent international standing where Sa punches above its weight on a range of issues. In restuarants: people being served still predominantly white, people serving, still predominantly black; In Private Schools, the kids are still predominantly white; The people who walk to work and in taxis, predominantly black, driving German sedans, yes, white; Your house work is still done by domestics, who live in miserable rooms at the back of your homes; You were the biggest beneficiary post 1994. Be grateful you're in SA... thank the ANC govt, by and large.. and address the issues which need to be addressed, and stop your whining....

somebody please shoot me, this is not the ANC we all rallied for in the early 90's, these arent the fruits of our visions. why do you swell so much with power and aim to amputate the right for people to be informed, we fought for the freedom of the media, FXI!

  • IcemanGP - 2012-06-27 20:43

Welcome to the modern AFRICAN NAZI COMMUNISTS.

  • Johan De Beer - 2012-06-27 20:51

Police, or security officials? Big difference.

      russell.w.wright.5 - 2012-06-28 06:30

Same thing.......both work for the ANC.

  • digitaldique - 2012-06-27 21:23

Could the DA also request the Police to do their dirty work? And would they get a bill?

  • sean.noble1 - 2012-06-27 21:39

simple the ANC needs the media to distrobute their propoganda, if this is how they treat a free press then give them a blackout only report on DA SACP etc. Totally ignore what the ANC is busy doing remove their power base as they need to keep the masses uneducated and stuffed with their lies to succeed.

      qlesole - 2012-06-27 22:35

They have stolen many billions, wasted trillions, ruin the country -but give some mealy mouthed apology about "tags". Go and die, you perfidious bunch of retarded thieves. (And could you be not a bit more subtle when you try to creep up the media's backside, now "crunch time" for the ANC is nearing?)
