ANC blocks Parliament debate on Zuma

2012-11-15 10:47

Cape Town - The ANC has used its majority in the National Assembly to block a debate on a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma.

Die Burger reported on Thursday that ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga said the opposition's proposed motion was frivolous and unnecessary.

The ANC's parliamentary caucus met on Wednesday to discuss the motion.

DA chief whip Wattie Watson and Cope's Juli Kilian wanted to know if the ANC was afraid of a debate, or a secret ballot.

Eight opposition parties last week gave notice of a motion of no confidence in Zuma, with DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko saying that "under his leadership the justice system has been politicised and weakened; corruption has spiralled out of control; unemployment continues to increase, the economy is weakening, and the right of access to quality education has been violated".

  • camp.j - 2012-11-15 10:52

There can be only ONE reason for this, they know there is a strong possibility there would be unanimous support. This block has done Zuma more harm than good, watch the space.

      Eterni80 - 2012-11-15 11:10

I'm sure that whenever JZ has visited Zimbabwe, it was for lessons on how to stay in power..

      morris.khunou - 2012-11-15 11:34

If you can clarify how harmful? True that it was a political game that sought to take advantage of ANC MP not in favour of Zuma. The game was not succesfull please dont scandalise it.

Nzimande and the commies want to create a law to stop Zuma insults. Welcome Africa to SA. DOWN WITH ANC!!!!

      Claudia_Meads - 2012-11-15 11:50

Welcome to INSANIA... For the record: On this day, the ANC has formally NATIONALZED INCOMPETANCE - it has now given itself the unapposed right to appoint the the most incompetant freaks it can find, to the highest positions conceivable.

      camp.j - 2012-11-15 11:52

@Morris, the ANC is merely protecting Zuma, i shall repeat myself, watch the space!

      aniken.vader.31 - 2012-11-15 11:53

I ask everyone who wants to comment against the current regime to add this as a signature: "DOWN WITH ANC!!!" I am SICK and TIRED of hearing news about how we whites hate the blacks and how we insult them and what not! ANC is a RACIST REGIME and we need ONCE AGAIN to fight the good fight against ANOTHER apartheid regime... Together means - all colours as one under the name Citizen of South Africa! ANC PLEASE get this fact right! Black fellow South Africans - PLEASE see past colours and understand that the anc is stepping al over your intelligence so that they can rule like dictators in the rest of africa. Let's stand united against a new regime of hate called the anc regime. They are so scarred to have a public debate, one in the parlament, because they are hiding behind media and laws and whatever else so that they do not get exposed publicly for what they really stand - they stand for themselves and for divide! We have fought this kind of evil before let's do it again! Please see us the whites as your compatriots and not your enamies the way the anc wants you to see us. DOWN WITH ANC!!!

      camp.j - 2012-11-15 13:26

@Kagiso and Morris, i'm gonna offer you guys some free food for thought so sit and enjoy. Have you for one minute considered that had the ANC allowed the vote and JZ had come out on top (as you claim he would) that it would have rendered him virtually untouchable and thoroughly vindicated? Just saying!

      djmain1 - 2012-11-15 13:27

The cANCer doesn't feel it is answerable to anyone - least of all the SAfrican public! Phansi cANCer, phansi!!!

      aniken.vader.31 - 2012-11-15 13:46

@kagiso.booi - the anc members are scared of going against one of their own! Look at the deaths and the death threaths this "peace-loving" anc is dishing out! The idea of this was to allow the anc members to voice their opinions SECRETLY and allow a change within the anc without anyone being in danger of being persecuted or even killed afterwards..! It is SAD that it has to come down to requesting a secret vote instead of using the normal democratic ways! But even so, the anc has put their members on the spot and requested them to block this move because THEY KNOW that there is unrest WITHIN the anc itself. @morris.khunou - your comment indicates that there is NO DEMOCRACY in sa as you seem to IMPOSE on me and others that our votes do not count because the anc will be voted in power whatever may come. Corruption, crime, dictatorship - you guys want it JUST because it is the anc! However, I would like to remind you of the wonderful dictatorships up in africa that have recently been removed by the force of the common people who are GATVOL of being walked on by the few that you guys love to keep in power at the expense of peache and unity. The history is FILLED with failed one-man power centers! You guys OBVIOUSLY have not learned from the past..! Don;t worry lessons will soon be dished out! But SERIOUSLY why do you want to get malema as the pres.??? Is he not corrupt and a chancer that loves to leech on the pain of the poor masses for his personal gains?

      aniken.vader.31 - 2012-11-15 13:49

@morris.khunou - are you guys not satisfied with your women? Why go into Claudia's character using your bellow-the-belt approach? Are you related to that d!ck-head zuma? Besides he is into ugly fat ones, Claudia is by far above the president in many ways! and I put it to you that you are a RACIST!

      morris.khunou - 2012-11-15 14:28

@ John> Which ever way you look at it John, certainly it was a dangerous motion to allow as its origin sought to take advantage of the pre-Mangaung lobying. It was possibly ochestrated wit the help of some in the ANC opposing Zuma, solely because their lack of support for him will result in Zuma not prefering them on his second term. Hence my reference to it as a political game. The ANC was quiet right not to experiment with the end results as this was going to polarise the organisation and even bring unintended consequenses and unwanted presidences in the politics of our country! Your insinuations on free food spoils what nearly became a civil and educated discussion! But keep well you have a potential to be level headed and sober!

      morris.khunou - 2012-11-15 14:53

@Anikevander> My suport of ANC is based on policy, principle and conviction. Our support of the ANC does not mean that we support corruption and related problems faced by the organisation. Many of the corruption you here about is leaked to the media and opposition by members of the ANC. MANY OF US ANI ARE OPPOSED TO CORRUPTION, BUT WE CHOOSE TO FIGHT IT FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES, I choose from within and you choose to fight it in the opposition. Start to campaign very hard for 2014 election, we will start campaigning three months before, lets see who wins! Good luck! .... As for Claudia, common man, Get a life man and have a sence of humour! You are stressing too much! Claudia is much more intelligent as I read her postings and I am sure she will not struggle to realise this is a joke! Are jokes not allowed here?

      morris.khunou - 2012-11-15 15:07

@Anikeventer > Many here know that Malema is not my favourite and always vehemetly opposed to what he represents both in character and ideology. I used "maybe" with reference to what he said that one day he is going to rule the ANC. I dont see that happening in our life time to make you feel easy. But who knows people my need him epecially if this arrogance and disrespect of black people continues.Political maturity and tolerence is needed, but this is usually a problem with emerging democracies like ours! untill then keep well!

That was the most stupid motion led and proposed by Lindiwe and Terror Lekota, how could they let their constituency down, i happy i am not part of all these opposition parties, they knew it wont get anywhere as they dont have numbers. Lekota is an angry guy. I was dissapointed to see Lindiwe tabling such motion, especially knowing her credibility and independent opinions on issues. I hope there are lessons to be leant, you dont just wake up feeling happy and proposed motions which are not realistic.

      charles.alfonso.7 - 2012-11-15 11:21

Michael,Michael, Michael the fact that the motion was blocked and not allowed to be debated in itself tells you a story. Lindiwe was right in tabling the motion. Mr. Zuma and company are concerned that a secret ballot will in fact support the motion. One only has to see the pain anc member Ben Taurok went through for having abstained from voting with his masters. Give us a secret ballot. Mr. Zuma will join the ranks of the unemployed with all of his cronies.

      warren.rodel - 2012-11-15 11:23

You need to turn the light on upstairs.

      theo.martinez.980 - 2012-11-15 11:47

Michael, if the opposition only needs to look at numbers they they should not come to the parliament at all. It is part of a democratic debate to have such a motion debated. If the ANC would play democratically they would allow the motion to be debated in the full chamber and have a vote on it. They have the numbers to easily defeat it. So why noT/ Are they afraid of not having quorum/ Are they afraid that even maybe only 1 ANC MP would not vote against the motion? It's the ANC silencing debate just like they wanna use the Secrecy Bill to silence the media, and the Key points Act (from apartheid) to avoid having to reveal Nkandla spending. And soon, under drive from red wine drunk Blade, it will be forbidden to even mention say something about Zuma in parliament and in the media. The difference between the current crop of ANC and the fascists NP is just the colour of the skin.

Right now, as crazy as it may sound, it is actually better for the country to have him up there to further convince the people on the fence about how ineffective the current regime is. Not a popular opinion, I'm sure, but if new leadership is brought in now, ANC will win by a landslide. Not because they're any good, but they will convince voters that they've changed !!
