ANC chief whip rejects Nkandla debate

2012-11-07 17:08

Johannesburg - A call by the DA for a parliamentary debate on President Jacob Zuma's private residence in Nkandla is frivolous, the office of ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga said on Wednesday.

"The essence of a debate in Parliament is to enlighten the public with the information on the subject of debate, and provide guidance on the matter under contest," his office said in a statement.

"It is unfortunate that the DA's interpretation and understanding of parliamentary debates seem to be inspired by a desire for grandstanding and politicking."

On Sunday, Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille led a delegation to Zuma's residence in KwaZulu-Natal, but was stopped by several hundred African National Congress supporters.

Police also refused permission for Zille to proceed along the road to the residence, citing safety reasons.

On Tuesday, opposition MPs discussed the issue in the National Assembly.

DA MP Debbie Schafer said the fact that ANC leaders did not condemn the actions of its members, who prevented Zille from inspecting Nkandla, was "shameful".

"We know Helen Zille is scary, but what threat did she pose to the security of the president?" said Schafer.

Motshekga's office said Zuma and relevant ministers had "comprehensively" responded to questions on the R200m upgrade to Zuma's home from opposition parties.

"There is nothing the debate would achieve that has not already been attained through the above-mentioned parliamentary oversight mechanisms."

It said it was appalled at Zille's "obtrusive and completely opportunistic" visit to Nkandla.

"For all intents and purposes, the DA delegation's visit to Nkandla... was clearly a provocative act, intent on garnering publicity and an incitement of violence.

"Such acts are reminiscent of the apartheid-style way of reducing the humanity of black people to nothingness, and show its hand in the way the DA perceives the highest office of the land."

Well they would, wouldn't they? Just remember it's YOUR money folks. Zuma Inc: liars, thieves, plunderers, carpetbaggers and hypocrites. A loota continua!

Also remember the majority of TAX comes from the people who DO NOT VOTE ANC.... The hated few's money is used to fund these criminals in government and the millions of uneducated, unemployed who support this prehistoric, uneducated, clueless, so called "leaders" of SA.

      assis.pontes.7 - 2012-11-07 17:55

Mr Motshekga, I hope that the residence at Nkandla has massive mirrors as this will help the ANC self-reflect. Before lambasting the DA for "acts are reminiscent of the apartheid-style way of reducing the humanity of black people to nothingness." stand before the mirror. It's the ANC that is reducing South Africans of all colour to nothingness...cause if the ANC gave a damn about humanity and actually matched their actions to it they would have built at least 1000 RDP houses...

      irene.buthelezi.1 - 2012-11-07 17:55

It's time the DA open a trust account because any decent citizen of this country is tired of paying over their hard earned tax money to a bunch of incompetent, thieving criminals.

suffer.kate.9 - 2012-11-07 18:07 What about all the marauding thieves who came from up North to slaughter all the locals and steal their land. Same thing guy. Who do you think sold your brothers to the Europeans? Your own 'brothers' did - that's who. To illustrate the racism that is inbred in your own culture, since when does land exclusively belong to BLACK people? History has land invasions recorded through countless decades in countless countries. It was a part of life back then. A part of life that was practised by both black and white, Indian, Chinese, Germans, Russians the list goes on. The sad thing is that people like you like to wallow in your own self pity and just cannot get along with people of another race or culture. THAT is Racism. It is the 21st century already. Get with the times.

MatHOLE Motshekga,Just who do you think you are,it's the countries/tax payers money. Why is SHOWERHEAD and the rest of cANCer corrupt thieves frightened of a little educated Lady,Helen Zille, checking on expenses? Don't worry if the corrupt is caught they won't go to jail just like Shaik and the rest of the cANCer thieves. Suggestion, try putting some education into that matHOLE in your head,it might help you with your verbal diarrhea problems.

Suffer.kate You hit the nail on the head. Some people think they have a legitimate claim to land that was never theirs in the first place. If you have proof that land belonged to you and was stolen, then talk. Open up your mind, and see that white people do not have this inherent hatred of blacks. I personally just hate stupid people, but you get dummies in every race. Move on, and get on with making your own life better. Stop making excuses and blaming others

      handy.andy.3990 - 2012-11-08 14:03

      Bobbycat - 2012-11-08 15:53

"reminiscent of the apartheid-style" - Oh please! Any negative or opposing view is now apartheid style. I don't know if I should laugh or cry - although the ANC would probably view either as reminiscent of an apartheid-style reaction.

      heathway.master - 2012-11-08 22:02

A very scary article which appeared in news 24 today was entitled "BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW". This article was written by a black lady, who must have a lot of creditability in her observations. Her opinion was that Zuma would be elected for a second term of office. Her reasoning was that the ANC did not act like any European country. It was dominated by a cadre of party members who held the reigns and made all the important decisions. In their opinion, they were scared of the unknown Mothlante, as he might be such a miss-guided individual, that he might have the temerity to try and clean up the ANC Government. This would mean a clamp down on inefficiency, wasteful expenditure, incompetent state representatives, corruption and tenderneurship etc. This would deprive the present ministers of extreme wealth accumulation by raping the countries coffers. Zuma has proven to turn a blind eye to all of the above, and concentrate solely on accumulating personal wealth and jetting across the world with a pompous and arrogant image of being SA's top dog. In order to retain the status quo, Mothantle was too high a risk, and could possibly be too idealistic in creating a Government the country deserves. In order to not limit their criminal actions, puppet Zuma needed to be elected again. Just how low can the ANC stoop. They are confident in the ignorant, non-educated masses keeping them in power due to their grand "STRUGGLE CREDENTIALS"

      heathway.master - 2012-11-08 22:48

I finally received my tax return for 2012 back from SARS. It puzzles me! They are questioning how many dependents I claimed. I guess it was because of my response to the question: "List all dependents?" I replied: 8 million illegal immigrants; 1,0 million drug dealers; Nearly 1.5 million people in overcrowded prisons; 18 million unemployed, and 234 members of Parliament and a useless President with 9 wives…….. Evidently, this was NOT an acceptable answer. I KEEP ASKING MYSELF, WHO THE F...k - DID I MISS? I’m really becoming forgetful in my old age…!!!!

No, 'ANC' is correct. I wouldn't say that they're a disgrace, though. More like a catastrophically corrupt comrade, cadre and crony convention. Moving on.

Leaders feathering their own nests.. and a retirement complex ... while there are so many poor people needing homes? Just check the salaries alone they give themselves ... and the smart cars ... etc etc ....

      handy.andy.3990 - 2012-11-08 14:05

DubulaAmanzi - please do, and when your kids dont have school books, the roads are falling apart and you can no longer drink water in South Africa, you will only have yourself to blame. I guess you dont pay any taxes, do you?

      edward.patterson.923 - 2012-11-08 16:12

@dubula; "I will continue voting for the Anc anyway." The average annual income of black South Africans is R60,600 that means the R200mil would employ 3300. The average cost of a RDP home is R50000 the R200mil renovation to Pres. Zuma's home would build 4000 RDP homes. And it's not like Zuma's home was impoverished before the renovations. So DubulaAmanzi my question to you is why will you continue to vote for the ANC

Two hundred million rand is nothing to him or to any of they cadres. They waste and steal that kind of money as a matter of course. However, no matter what the "chief whip" says, it's our money they are stealing, and we do not consider this to be frivolous at all. @Abner I disagree, thousands of people continue to loose their lives daily in hospitals, clinics and some due to crime,so some of their money could have been channeled to health care to safe someones life.So Zuma and the ANC are resposible for those deaths.@Christos you are a fool just like Abner and probably still weT behind the ears.People like you and Abne are a reason why abortion should not be stop once initiated

      grant.coffey.5 - 2012-11-07 20:14

//Now at least nobody is killed.// Yes because no one died today from not getting anti retrovirals or from violent crimes that could have been prevented. No one.

      james.hurley.1401 - 2012-11-08 01:08

@Abner and @Christo - you are both equally idiotic. Abner first - I was a child when apartheid ended, so I had no part in apartheid other than inheriting white privilege. I certainly never paid tax to kill blacks. What you are not understanding here is that the government continues to play on the anger of the electorate by dredging up apartheid whenever any attention is paid to corruption and unnecesary waste of resources. Why should the president not live in a modest home? No past president, even during apartheid, has seen fit to blow R200 million on their private residence. It's obscene in a country of such poverty. @Christo Whites are not harder workers. Unequal education systems play a huge part in differences in employment, as well as motivation. If your future looks hopeless, due to your lack of access to resources, it's more likely you'll be 'lazy' (or at least, will struggle to find motivation).

      handy.andy.3990 - 2012-11-08 14:28

abner.malema - my friend, you had none of those things before apartheid. I cannot believe my eyes. You are actually ok with someone taking money from you that you pay every month, and spending it on themselves? And its fine with you that kids are not going to have text books, schools or hospitals, because Zuma is spending the money on him. Man, you are a coward to just take it like that. I feel sorry for you, you are proof that people will believe anything you tell them.

      handy.andy.3990 - 2012-11-08 14:34

ratsaka.eugene - what a ridiculous argument. The world is what it is today. there are people from all cultures living all over the world. What is shocking is that some cultures cannot snap out of the tribal mode that apparently allows a democratically chosen government to loot the public coffers and enrich themselves. That, is a dark ages mentality.

      wo0two0t - 2012-11-08 18:10

James - agreed but there are reasons why whites have white privilege it didn't just happen. White culture seems to focus more on the future, good living standards etc. while African culture more on rewarding their leaders while the rest live in poverty. To us Zuma is our leader not our ruler like abner thinks.

  • Ashley - 2012-11-07 18:21

Yeah right... blame it on apartheid. When will we start looking ahead. Our nation will never move in the right direction, if we keep looking backwards.

  • firmsly.kabelo - 2012-11-07 18:28

Dr Mathole Motshekga you're an intellectual stop issuing such disgraceful statements. Zuma must tell the public why must R240 million must be spent on him alone.

      Fundukululukunjakunne Why Cano - 2012-11-07 19:29

Man your dam right! how can one person have access to such money?

      james.hurley.1401 - 2012-11-08 01:10

I agree. It's so selfish. He could open several schools with that, feed thousands and thousands of people. It's so sickening that he has no conscience and people still blindly follow him. In that way it is like apartheid, people being swayed by political rhetoric and not thinking about the greater good.

      Bruce - 2012-11-08 13:36

This old man hasn't been an intellectual ever since he became an anc chief whip...I how I used to respect him!!! Sad how some people allow political positions cloud their judgement

  • michael.jackwood - 2012-11-07 18:38

DA is losing focus, their obsesion with President Zuma is getting out of order, this is how ANC will continue to rule this country, DA must talk policies on how they want to deal with challenges facing our country, thats what will atract South Africans to vote for them, not daily attacks on Zuma's every move. This strategy will work againts them.

  • patrick.bennett.9277 - 2012-11-07 18:38

The ANC has taken hard-earned tax money, scraped together by diligent mothers and fathers, and spent it on a PRIVATE household for the President. It is as simple as that. Not a government building, but a luxurious African Versailles for King Zuma himself - and if History is anything to go by - we know how that ended. Seeing Nkandlagate as anything else is quite simply delusional.

  • gary.desousa.7 - 2012-11-07 18:41

How does the visit along a public road reduce the humanity of black people? The humanity of black people is reduced by the continued lootin, damage to property, the vandalism on marches, the lack of understanding of the laws of protest, the thugs and criminals in our prisons, the corruption, the rape of our people, the murders including farmers etc etc. THATS humaity??

      nkululeko.osman - 2012-11-07 19:10

I despise the 17th of March 1992. - with my whole heart, soul, spirit, every cell in my body, every hair on my body.....This day is an exact replica of what happened the 6 February 1838.* How interesting the ominous parallels!!!!!! * Read paragraph "Death". (if interested)

      grant.coffey.5 - 2012-11-07 20:26

//This day is an exact replica of what happened the 6 February 1838// No it's nothing like that, at all.

      rocky.bell.5 - 2012-11-07 20:52

What ever floats your boat, mate. "Agreements were signed" Only one party honoured the agreement - the other NOT. How difficult is that to understand. Chuck me Farlie.

      grant.coffey.5 - 2012-11-08 05:46

Because no agreements regarding the topic of Nkandla were signed yesterday. There is no parallel, you are stretching.

  • Bongeka - 2012-11-07 18:49

I can see that this Nkandla saga is not coming to an end, at least not very soon. But good people, do you think all these comments will bring any changes at how things are done in this Zuma administration? I don't think so. If a CEO of a company is not doing good, board members get rid of him/her, right? Likewise, the NEC of the ruling party must do the same thing. But I doubt that very much because it looks like they're sleeping with same blanket and the BOSS is always right.

      george.slade.161 - 2012-11-07 19:35

the YOU must vote DA . DO SOMETHING !

      dee.bone.39 - 2012-11-07 20:35

the boss is not the boss in this case. He's to much of an elvis gigolo who cant even make a speech. He's just getting his slice of the pie while the shareholders (big white business, guptas, ramaphosas, sexwale etc) are coining it big time and all at the expense of the rest of the country

  • patrick.bennett.9277 - 2012-11-07 18:52

The ANC has taken the money from the hard working mothers and fathers of this country and used it to purchase King Zuma an African Versailles (and if History is anything to go by then we must remember how that ended). Tax money has been squandered on not a government building, but rather a private palace for the President to call home. Believing anything else is quite simply delusional.

  • Fundukululukunjakunne Why Cano - 2012-11-07 19:25

Majority of the Elders within the ANC have given up on the people they claim to fight for. How can a country afford to spend such money in one place yet there are unsolved issues. Toll roads, water works, hospitals with out meds, underpaid teachers the list endless

      george.slade.161 - 2012-11-07 19:36

      rocky.bell.5 - 2012-11-07 19:45

my question as well. On the news tonight. One of the the oldest cities in the country ( and by the way; the first town to have electric street lighting!!), Kimberley has NO WATER. Water has to be carted in by the army - I mean seriously - this NEVER happened when the NP governed the country.......what has gone wrong, what??? hospitals without water??? pleeeeeeeez! is this what the anc has to offer??????

  • tresso.sven - 2012-11-07 19:36

I really hope the ANC is proud of their Version of Democracy...

      phaldiemeyer - 2012-11-07 21:27

Their version of democracy was copied from George Orwell's Animal Farm, check it out you'll be horribly surprised by the similarities.
