ANC dismisses De Klerk's views

2012-11-03 22:55

Johannesburg - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday dismissed claims by former president FW de Klerk that the party was responsible for the widening inequality gap in the country.

"The ANC ... views De Klerk's comments as nothing more than a red herring to deflect attention from the shocking figures which were released by Stats SA as part of Census 2011 and which showed that white South Africans are still way better off economically than their fellow black compatriots," said provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala.

The party viewed De Klerk foundation as another proof that the discourse of apartheid denialism in South Africa was "in the ascendancy".

Apartheid did not end in 1994 when the democratic government took over, said Zikalala.

In his speech to business leaders on Wednesday De Klerk lambasted the wealth-redistribution policies of the ANC.

He said they would cause "social engineering in which people's prospects would once again be determined by race, rather than by individual merit and circumstances".

De Klerk hit out at what he called the Marxism-Leninism of some members of the ANC ruling alliance, which he blamed for widespread unemployment and the failure to attract investment. The party dismissed his assertions.

Zikalala said it was regrettable that there were some pockets of South Africans who try to peddle the "disturbing myth" that because the racial discrimination ended in 1994 South Africa was now a country where everyone was equal.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," he said. "It is disturbing that in the face of such irrefutable and incontrovertible evidence that South Africa still had a long way to go to address the imbalances of the past the likes of de Klerk had crawled out of the wood work to defend the status quo."

The party called on "progressive whites" and all South Africans to work with the ANC to reverse the imbalances of the past by implementing policies such as the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment and Affirmative Action.

Funny how the ANC never comes up with a good argument... they just totally beat at those telling the truth! ... ha ha ha.. a nerve with hit!!! :)))

      SharonE - 2012-11-04 01:30

All I can say to the ANC is that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. If it was only de Klerk saying this it would be one thing, but the criticism is coming from all over: Mamphele Ramphele, Prof Jansen, Bishop Tutu - they can't all be wrong.

      claudia.meads - 2012-11-04 03:00

The only red herring applicable here is the big ANC fish that is rotting from the head. The ANC is like an alcoholic – it refuses to admit it has a problem (despite everybody else telling it so) and everything is always everybody else’s fault. Listening to the ANC’s reasoning is like listening to the reasoning of a two-year old child – it wants everything, for doing nothing, for no apparent reason. What the ANC and all its apologists are too dense to fathom is, even if you take every last sent from white South Africans and give it all to black South Africans, it would make almost no difference to their economic status – apart from the fact that once you have taken it from white people, it is gone forever, like ZimBOBwe… The other inconvenient little verity, the ANC is not sharing with their crazed mobs of followers, is the fact that half of Zimbobwe’s GDP come from South Africa – when South Africa fails, were are South African’s going to run to, to survive..? Let us imagine for a moment that the ANC took over South Africa in 1948 – where would SA have been today..? Let me assure you, it would have been an economic wasteland, unquestionably one of the poorest places on earth.

      goeie.jaarling - 2012-11-04 05:36

I think we are all racists in South Africa, we conditioned ourselves to accept these levels of arrogance and corruption by the black elite just because they are black. We are actually expecting them to be corrupt just because they are African and black....we would have never accept this BS from any government if they were white, and by “we” I mean black and white South Africans.

      sarel.esterhuizen - 2012-11-04 06:06

How I wish that we could use Education level as primary dimension for segmenting inequality... Since everything starts there.

      stirer.kathray - 2012-11-04 07:37

"racial discrimination ended in 1994 South Africa was now a country where everyone was equal." Not true. Racial discrimination is alive and well, and increasing in its voracity. Not BEE itself, but the way it is being applied is in itself racism at its best; and Zuma's threat to companies unless they donate to charities that have 100% black dependents, is another. this has nothing to do with equality of races, but everything to do with the total domination of the minorities.

      claudia.meads - 2012-11-04 10:37

ssmonareng, The Congo, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Niger, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Togo and Madagascar did not have 40(+) years of Apartheid before 1994 either, yet they are today the poorest countries in the world (in fact in the order given)... Your 'Norway' example is as meaningless as your ANC regime. BTW - since 2011 Norway has technically had more serial killers (viz mass murderers) than South Africa - ie Anders Behring Breivik. Although it must be said, true to the “African spirit” collectively South Africans come close to doing what he did, every single day..! Can you please substantiate your claim: ‘Afrikaans people projected their feelings of inferiority and hate to Black Africans’ – eg Who are “Afrikaans people”? ‘Afrikaans people’ include bar far the majority of brown people. What feelings of ‘inferiority’ did (what I have assume here is) White Afrikaners have? Eg from their ranks came the world’s first heart transplant, a country that was one of only a handful of nuclear superpowers in the WORLD, the people who invented deep mining and the associated tunnelling-engineering (in fact the same technology – invented by white South Africans, was used to construct the Euro tunnel), the world’s best national airline (bar none), the inventor of the CAT-scan (for which he won a Nobel Physics Prize), the only country on earth to commercialize the "oil from coal" process, PBMR nuclear technology, to name a few only...

I'm sorry did I miss a trick or two here but wasn't there an article about what De Kerk said in his "speech to business leaders, the wealth-redistribution policies of the ANC and the Marxism-Leninism of some members of the ANC ruling alliancee" already this week? News24 is this article just a repeat of the same story you wrote earlier in the week as there is no other news to report on at this hour and on the weekend?I speak under correction here but I'm sure this item was already mentioned in the news by this very website in midweek.Or was that something else totally not related to this?

      dimitar.kostov.1048 - 2013-02-04 08:58

@Claudia.Meads You are trying to use facts to substantiate your argument, but you should know by now that no one cares about facts. To the majority of South Africans facts are not important. What is important are some pie in the sky ideas seasoned with a whole bunch of propaganda on a dish served called on revenge. Revenge for grossly exaggerated so called "atrocities" that very few people actually experienced. The masses eat it up and wash it down with a glass full of a promise that if whites leave their wealth will be transferred to the blacks and the blacks will somehow become rich overnight. That's what's at the core of all of this... the majority want a easy piece of a imaginery pie which they will never get because all wealth will always be funnelled to their government. And when whites leave and SA becomes another failed African country they will curse profanities at the west while stretching their hand out of help to feed their population.

The ANC implemented BEE. BEE is structured such that it benefits only middle-upper income bracket. This has a direct implication on the Gini coefficient. To rubbish claims that this policy, and by extension the ANC, has contributed to widening the inequality gap reflects on the ANC either a refusal to accept the analysis, a complete denial or a deep misunderstanding of how these things work. But what am I saying, in what scenario would the ANC agree with De Klerk and admit to this?

  • alwyn.vantonder - 2012-11-03 23:50

Who REALLY cares what the ANC rejects? ..yet the ANC can't smoke the pipe! They are a bunch of children that needs to be looked after.. especially that trash president.. What a bunch of uneducated fools.. They are so dumb, they don't even know it.. The ANC is losing the battle.. the cracks are showing! The vice president oficially challenged the president today.. If you look at the economy as a neutral person, you can still see racism. Not white but discrimination against people who isn't black. Get a foreign citizenship. Seems like any developed country would be better than this country, lately even other african countries are better off than RSA

      itu.sets - 2012-11-04 00:09

As much as you would like to be neutral, you can and your comment shows that. When you say discrimination against people who aren't black, do we have any green people out there? NO!!! Trust me, as a black young South African woman I have experienced racism from white people especially Afrikaans speaking. Its sad to have that at this day and age, but I am grateful because unlike our parents, we are able to stand up for ourselves and have a good education as well.

  • nick.collis.16 - 2012-11-04 00:04

There is always going to be a knee jerk reaction from the ANC to a white politicians criticism . This is perfectly understandable given our collective past. The role of the black intelectual or moral authority like a Mandela or Tutu is vital. Their criticism is not so easily dismissed and can act as a catalyst for changing the mindset of the average South African.

    1. The civilized whites (from Europe) never stole from the blacks. They defeated the black african MAJORITY by force in battle relatively easily because the blacks could not even organize a piss-up in a brewery at the time.... Technologically or Intellectually. Thereafter they instituted law to control the barbarian majority of africa. 2. One day, the time will come when world natural resources (land, water, minerals) will become so scarce that the land will again be taken over because the land and resources of africa is going to waste under african rule and african corruption.

  • wikus.schalkwyk - 2012-11-04 05:52

I don't want percentages, I want actual numbers. Then we can compare apples to apples. None of this "oh, whites earn more" crap. How many of them earn above 250k and how many of them live in shacks... these are better figures to compare.

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-11-04 06:01

If you drive around Joburg you can see all the new buildings and RDP houses with solar geysers and satellite dishes. It is visible proof that there has been progress. The truth is that the real problem is we have about 10 million illegal immigrants mostly living in squatter camps and responsible for the bulk of our crime. The Nats did a better job of keeping them out and there were virtually no squatter camps. The Nats didn't hand over cause they wanted to, they had to cause they were bankrupt because of sanctions and the cost of maintaining their stupid ideology. De Klerk is irrelevant and really doesn't deserve airtime. Blacks are definitely better off today than they were under the old regime. Only problem is providing services to an extra 10 million people is hard. Amazing that people come from Zim, Moz, Somalia, Nigeria, etc, etc, etc to live in squatter camps and then demand service delivery. De Klerk cheated on his wife and on his countrymen, I wouldn't give him the time of day.

Wow. Perhaps the Whites in SA earn more because we do not support Unions and go on strike every second day. Perhaps because we do not threaten our employers with panga's and and intimidate fellow workers. Could be because we could not get any jobs post 1994 and we had to start our own small businesses, and are now reaping the rewards of 15 years hard work?

      rui.d.barros.7 - 2012-11-04 08:20

Spot on !!!! The reason for the disparices of white and black income is because there is a 50% black unemploement despite BEE . So who has failed the masses ? Government has failed to create jobs or a job creation enviroment cos they in bed with unions.

  • John.Yossarian22 - 2012-11-04 06:03

De Klerk might be correct, or not, that's not the point. It's just another example of how the ANC cannot tolerate any criticism of their failures. Deny, deny, deny. And apartheid and racism is always there as a scapegoat. Sad...

  • willem.d.jager - 2012-11-04 06:06

The ANC will probably also dismiss claims that health care, education, police, human settlements and other government functions are in disarray because of their inability to govern. What the ANC and its supporters fail to recognise is the reality that continued white privilege, despite oppressive laws, is the result hard work. It is not a genetic predisposition and it is not a given. It is earned. Those white folk who don't earn it, don't have it. Same with coloured folk. Same with Indian folk. Same with black folk. The current enemy is not the Apartheid that kids read about in their school history books (those that are lucky enough to have books), no: It is the corruption within the ANC that forgot its role as the people's party now that a privileged few are living off the fat of the land. May you be held responsible for your part in keeping the poor people of this country in shacks. If there is a red herring, then it is the ANC's incessant shouting of "white privilege" while the townships are burning and the black diamonds are living like (corrupt) kings.

If so, then it proves that the ANC is useless and de Klerk is right. The only racial discriminatory laws that exist favours blacks and generally disadvantages everyone else and whites in particular. Coloureds and Asians also suffered during apartheid, so how come they are vastly better off then black Africans? The answer is that the ANC and it's alliance treat them sheep.

Embracing Capitalism is the reason that the ANC has failed to address wealth distribution. The two just don't fit.

@ itu.sets ...... a(good) education is the key to equality and wealth (not give me)....emample: my maid asked if i would give her son (dropped out of school at grade 5) (now 19 years) some garden work. I agree, he rocked up at 6 (eager beaver) yesterday 03/11. I explained in detail (eng & izulu) what had to be done. ie: remove all weeds. (simple neh). Of to work I go......return home at 15h00. hol & behold... all the weeds are heart and healthy.....80 % of my beautiful flowers & plants have gone (I say 80% cos the bal 20% are huge cycads and such) Lovely face-brick work (took almost a year to set up) were all removed and stack neatly along the driveway......poor bugger still does not understand what he did wrong or why I am so pissed off about....he still wanted his money (all R100 of it) my good man ????

No amount of forced directives or laws or begging from progressive whites to support current or future ANC miss-leader’s doomed policies of Affirmative Action or BB-BEE visions for equality will work. Less than 10% of our population might benefit from it, while 90% will suffer more and find it harder to live. A 30% increase is useless, if your basic cost of living cost you 40% more, meaning you end up 10% poorer per year. The Census lie that Whites on average earn R345,000p/a is a doctored Statistic, 92% of Whites today do not earn more than R160,000p/a. There is nothing more that the ANC can get from the average Whites. Maybe it will take another 20 years for Blacks to realise that the white Baas died in 1994. You are now working for a black Baas, whom mistreat you much worse than the white Baas ever did. The masses are awaking to fact the ANC are the failure that brought more hardship and pain and consists of miss-leaders that only serve to line their own pockets through jail-schooled fraud, deceit and blatant robbery tactics. 95% of our populous are good and honest, we require likewise leaders. Two days before the Election go catch a free loaf of bread for your vote, for them to be driven in a big Mercedes from party to party and rob you, while you stay on the pick and shovel, as you were before 1994. Fact: Only 1 of 25 will ever be rich and live in luxury in South Arfica.

Poverty level is lower now compared to those days of apartheid, people then did not even have electricity and running water, but of cause ANC government is responsible for lack of better schools and service delivery because people responsible are corrupt and are missusing money for their own bennefit.

      Sandile Bhoma Ka Nduli - 2012-11-04 07:52

I beg to disagree with you when saying poverty level is lowering. Let us look at our unemployment rate, unemployed graduates, nurses leaving our country for better salaries. Let us look at these inequalities globally there is still a lot that need to be done in terms of regulating such. It is also understandable that when ANC took over it had to face lot of ecomic challenges but the fact remains we are not where we should be at. There is certain individuals that are gaining and those individuals do not have interest in the count but fulling their own personal interest in the expense of the country.

      michael.jackwood - 2012-11-04 08:29

I agree somewhat with you, but also on the other hand, i think south africans are not working hard to get out of poverty, there are many business opportunitiee here, only people who come from other African countries such as Somalia and DRC Congo and Nigeria can identify. If you travel to Limpopo, you will note that people there are making it for themselves, working hard, people there dont live in squater camps, but still is the poorest province, i think innovation and hard work spirit is needed.

It is on the wall (written) of every corner of this country, Africa and global family that De Klerk has benefited tremendously from a shameful apartheid. He knows less about democracy and the struggle that led to the downfall of apartheid regime he was happily part of. De Klerk should leave ANC alone and resuscitate National Party as he is slowly but surely conducting a political resurrection. UN made a stupid mistake by awarding a kingpion of apartheid, Mr De Klerk Nobel prize. He sees himself as a political hero whereas he is just mischievous man in this country.

      kevin.t.lilley - 2012-11-04 07:58

Matlala the ELITE of SA are no longer white just LOOK and you will see them all around you. They are BLACK ANC supporters who are plundering the people and the country to their own greed and corruption. I am white and was UNEMPLOYED for 7 years and of 5000 job applications the ONLY response I ever got was sorry this job is reserved for Affirmative Action. Open your eyes and LOOK arouynd at who the rich are and how they got there. Corruption is the rot in this country. LOOK and please reply to me - which parastatal is currently successful that was working perfectly well before being GIVEN to the ANC and profitable? SABC? Transnet? SAA? Eskom? Hospitals? Schooling? Home Affairs? Roads? Municipalities? In fact EVERYTHING that ANC touches goes rotten. Sorry Matlala but just remember the addage \there are NONE so blind as those who will not see\ and \There is NO medcine for stupid\ this is NOT about race at all it is about inneptitude, maladministration and corruption by the ANC.

  • tuwanir - 2012-11-04 07:26

Thanx to aparheid most of our people black or white, are racist. Thanx, again to the country's freedom fighters all of us can express our views.

      gary.doyle.520 - 2012-11-04 07:50

Tuwanir, please remind us exactly what these so called freedom fighters done?? Any efforts didn't amount to anything. Did you forget how it really happened or are you one of those with selective memory?? It's more fables and fibs that make this country one big horrible mess at the moment.

  • Anthony C. Onwudiegwu - 2012-11-04 07:30

The reality of facts that it is easier to distroy than build is stairing the country in the face, yet many seem not to see, realise or be checked by this reality.\r\nwhichever position we deside to take here the fact of what prevails over the other is what we will live come another ten to eighteen years. wether De Klark or ANC emerge ontp of this discussion.

  • stirer.kathray - 2012-11-04 07:36

"racial discrimination ended in 1994 South Africa was now a country where everyone was equal." Not true. Racial discrimination is alive and well, and increasing in its voracity. Not BEE itself, but the way it is being applied is in itself racism at its best; and Zuma's threat to companies unless they donate to charities that have 100% black dependents, is another. this has nothing to do with equality of races, but everything to do with the total domination of the minorities.

  • Muffin_man_can - 2012-11-04 07:45

Screw this anc and all of you that support their misguided views. Your days are numbered, your rule marked by corruption and hatred is coming to an end.

  • beatrice.chandia - 2012-11-04 08:16

Former president De Klerk is correct, the ANC has failed its people, in 1996 they instituted policies that would only benefit a few at the expense of the masses. People are better offer off because of transfer payments. And not because they have been empowered through structural change. These temporal solutions have had limited success. Why is it this so good at collecting taxes and yet there are hardly any tangible results. The ANC has worsened some of the distortions created by Aparthed and thus it's policy success remains limited and is still over shadowed by it's failures, it's worst being it's bureaucratic failures

Equality in South Africa will come the day that any South African, no matter their race, social standing or financial position, is provided with the opportunity to rise above their current position. The South Africa we should all strive towards is a South Africa where anyone can do great things and fulfill their greatest ambitions through hard work and dedication. The conditions in South Africa already bring us half-way, few countries in the world provide the level of entrepreneurial opportunities that we so easily take for granted. Unfortunately most South Africans are not provided with the skills and education required to take advantage of the opportunities on offer. Personally I believe we should stop pointing fingers and arguing and start asking how can we fix this.
