ANC disturbed by veterans' warning

2012-10-25 16:46

Johannesburg  - The ANC has expressed disquiet at the party's military veterans' warning to Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe not to contest the position of president.

"This statement amounts to a threat, which is in violation of the ANC constitution which allows any member... in good standing to be eligible... to any position in the organisation," spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said on Thursday.

"There is no place for threats and coercion in the ANC and its structures."

Last week, the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) warned Motlanthe that if he challenged President Jacob Zuma for the ANC's presidency, it would not support him.

"We will support Kgalema Motlanthe for deputy president, but if he contests the [presidency], the conference resolved to support comrade Cyril Ramaphosa [for deputy president]," chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe said.

The African National Congress holds its national elective conference in Mangaung in December.

Some party structures have said they want Motlanthe to take over the position of leader from Zuma. Motlanthe has not said whether he will accept the nomination.

Mthembu said the ANC had to guard against creating intolerance in the party.

Lobbying had to happen within acceptable limits of motivating the capacity of a candidate nominated.

"Our members must refrain from introducing foreign practices that can polarise and divide the organisation," he said.

It's not about what you veterans want. It's about what this country needs.

Don't you find it ironic that black people always throw racisim and apartheid in your face, yet these old farts are cool with keeping the status quo. I mean, hey, they black, they old, why should they ever have to change. Please do not vote for the cANCer, please. For once follow through on your threats.

It's the same story all over Africa and will take hundreds of years to change; Give me, take what they want, power, dictatorship, fight and fight again. They really do not want to live a peaceful life, all you hear are negative and aggressive comments. When last have you hear anything positive or constructive coming from our so call leaders? “We want our land and will take it, we want our minerals, we want, we want…” and if they get everything they want, then will turn on each other and start fighting for what’s left of that destroyed country. (Don’t take my word for it do some research of Africa)

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-10-26 14:31

Makenawn. Most of them hung around in Zim. and Zambia, making babies and getting drunk. Lots of those wearing the uniform today never went anywhere, never did anything, but hell, who cares as long as the colour is o.k.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-10-25 16:59

Problem is, Motlanthe is no better. Either way we are screwed. The only salvation for this country is to oust the ANC and vote the DA into power.

      mohlala.moroamadile - 2012-10-25 17:17

@stirrer.stirrer - now u talking nonsense - how do u know Motlanthe is no better

      sani.ghana.3 - 2012-10-25 17:35

I will vote for terror and the madam, their hands are clean and they know the job

      sean.carbutt - 2012-10-26 08:32

@ Mohlala, let me answer that question. Up until about 2 weeks ago, i would have given him my vote, no problems. Compared to zoomer, well it's light and day. BUT, about 2 weeks ago, the Dep Sheriff showed us and the rest of the world that he is an OUT AND OUT COMMUNIST. Thats why he must never come into power and why he will now never get the support of the non cANCer voters. So i am afraid, i will have to vote for godzille

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-10-26 14:32

Camp.j. we are getting Zuma again in December and this time he wants his plane and a helicopter as well.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-10-26 14:35

Mohlala.moroamadile. Mothlanthe is a dear man but not capable of leading a country. He blows with the wind and others will rule behind the curtains. In fact there is no leadership material up high in the ANC and they prefer to keep it that way.

How long still before politics becomes back ground sound like a Buick or Merc, quiet but powerful and effective. What bothers is African leaders now in RESPONSIBLE positions use the power gained as politicians to 'brag' over 'their' riches which in fact belongs to all, irrespective for who you vote. The government of a country is there to look after the people, they work for us, yes they are our slaves. This does not get explain here in Africa, they are hiding this truth to fill their pockets. The politicians are keeping Africa poor. Skelms.

If Zuma can focus more on being a president and spend less time lobbying he will be one of the greatest presidents. All he does is connive and scheme cause that’s all he knows coming from the intelligence of the ANC. No substance, no vision, but unfortunately he is good at what he does…..which is scheming and clinging to power.

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-10-25 17:00

He will never be one of the greatest presidents. Maybe the greatest pilferer but that's the only accolade he deserves.

      shamiel.mathews - 2012-10-26 10:26

I agree Rob, he will never be a good president. He is too self-absorbed, lacks vision. I honestly think he is good at scheming. Look what he did to Thabo when he was fired. My only wish is that if he is re-elected (& unfortunatly there is a good chance he will) people should move away from the ANC so that we can have a real democracy....where a party can be voted out if they don't deliver. What we have is not a democracy, because there is no accountability. At the moment the president and many gov ministers ignore court orders. Now how can this be a democracy???

  • bongane.zwane.948 - 2012-10-25 16:58
