ANC leadership nominations open

2012-09-29 17:40

Johannesburg - The ANC has opened its nomination process for the leadership contest in Manguang, the party said on Saturday.

"The nomination process was endorsed by the national executive committee on Friday and the nomination process was opened," spokesperson Keith Khoza said.

"It is necessary that the process must unfold... Members can now nominate for all the leadership positions in all the provinces and the nomination process ends in November."

The African National Congress held a special NEC meeting in Midrand, Johannesburg on Friday.

Khoza said no branches were disqualified but said that 631 branches did not meet the criteria and were "not in good standing" therefore they would not send any representatives to Manguang.

According to the Saturday Star, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said the membership of the ruling party had increased to 1 220 057.

Khoza said Friday's meeting ran late as the party was discussing certain issues.

"The report was received well and the meeting discussed the breakdown in terms of delegates in each branch," he said.

He added that the nomination process was opened earlier than expected because "the issue was finalised" and he stated that no branch meeting would be called over the weekend.

Beeld newspaper reported that after the party's audit KwaZulu-Natal had 331 820 members while the Eastern Cape stood at 187 585. Limpopo had 161 686, Gauteng 134 909 and Mpumalanga 132 729.

The Saturday Star reported that KwaZulu-Natal saw an increase of around 90 000 members since January. The Eastern Cape membership had dropped significantly.

The Free State had 121 074 members, North West 75 145, Western Cape 38 428 and the Northern Cape 36 428.

When asked about the increase in membership in KwaZulu-Natal and the decrease in the Eastern Cape, Khoza said: "Those are the only provinces that can explain that. I can't explain that."

Elective congress

The opening of the nomination process meant that ANC members, branches and provinces could now openly speak about who they want to lead the party for the next five years.

About 4 500 of the 1.2m ANC members was expected to attend the elective congress in December.

All 3 687 branches would be represented.

The breakdown of the number of delegates that would be sent to Manguang is worked out with a formula and would be announced on Tuesday, Khoza said.

If only they had someone to nominate that could give us some hope.. the cupboard is bare.

      sandy.langenstrass - 2012-09-29 21:50

None of them measure up....all fall short of what is required to get this country right....and most have had their fingers in a corruption we shall never be free of them taking...and lining their own pockets...I repeat, non of the members of Parliament are fit to be a S.A President.

That is good, now till December they will take-out each other

Let the show start, i respect this man JZ, he managed to hold this debate and he is in charge, this time aruond in 2007 ANC was in state of chaos, but i dont know how he managed to supress this debate. Hate him if you want but i think he is going to make sure that the whole leadership elected in Polokwane retain their position unopposed. Watch the space.

Well, the timing is perfect to shut Malema up...

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-09-29 20:40

Ag please man, don't exaggerate the former goatherder's importance. He was an incidental rallying point for those who were aggrieved by Mbeki's decision to keep Cosatu and the SACP out of the policy making processes of the ANC. Mbeki called them the extreme left as he put them in their places. There was the allegations of a coup against Tokyo, Ramaphosa and Phosa, which created even more enemies for Mbeki. The former goatherder was just a pawn. Lastly, the decision to open the nomination process only now was taken by the NEC which has over 80 people. The former goatherder is just a ceremonial president whose duty is to read speeches prepared for him. When he speaks off the cuff, it's always cringe worthy stuff rubbish like: “child-bearing give an extra training to Women; I used to bliksem gays when I was young; the minority parties do not have rights ... Blah!blah!blah” everything which proves that he has never read, and does not understand the Constitution, let alone what being a President entails

I'd rather see a condom on the ballot paper as the anc representative than either Zuma or Mothlante, at least the condom is good for something.

      siphom.mnguni - 2012-09-29 19:53

@seetelo.mosimaneotsile:)you have said it in mouthful, it ia really a cause for concern. I call myself a former Durbanite because while I was born and grew up there I vowed not to stay there anymore. My family home was burnt into ashes in what was then ANC/IFP violence.

thank you Themba. I agree with you totally about Pallo Jordan. He was an independent thinker and therefore was destined to be ousted. Sad state of affairs. It seems we are on a roller coaster that is headed downwards in terms of leadership. No one to be entrusted to the role of CEO.

  • mandla.hlatywayo - 2012-09-30 02:55

we going see the matsonga and vendas to support xhosas and zulus to become the richiest tribes with tenders again.couse anc leads by those two tribes, but one day anc wil regret this tribalism segment.

  • Tshilidzi Wa Ha Mukhovha - 2012-09-30 09:22

I would like everyone who feel they got good qualities leadership to come forward and be ready for nominations. We as member of ANC we must stop electing people because we know if that somebody be in that position I will also get something No. We must avoid nomination of incompetent people.

  • lums.zindela - 2012-09-30 09:30

I smell ghost membership in some provinces. Voters will be robbed of their right. Watch the space.

In my view, if you are pro-Zuma you lack ambition and some form of education. The man has done f* all except amass himself with wealth. Show me a great prospective leader within the ANC and I'll reward you with R100 and an ANC t-shirt (it's going to hurt my pride but I'll get it for you).

So no brances are disqualified, but 631 branches didn't meet the criteria and were not in 'good standing'. Probably won't vote for Zuma thus they can't send representatives to Mangaung. That's the scewest democracy I ever heard.
