ANC member system manipulated - report

2012-11-18 17:35

Johannesburg - An ANC task team probing alleged irregularities in last year's local government elections candidate lists, found that the party's membership system had been manipulated, it was reported on Sunday.

The report showed that in many instances candidates for municipal elections preferred by branches were not selected for no apparent reason, The Sunday Independent reported.

This created divisions, tensions and disillusionment among party members.

The task team, headed by now African Union Commission chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, investigated 419 African National Congress wards across the country.

The team handed over its report to the national executive committee at its meeting this weekend.

Before last year's May 18 local government elections, the ANC announced a new process allowing communities to select their candidates. There were several protests around the country when popular candidates were removed from the candidate lists.

According to the newspaper, the candidate lists were changed and tampered with, and unknown candidates were imposed on members.

Some candidates only joined the ANC after they were nominated.

The task team also found that government services were withheld from communities that did not select the councillors.

"Certain ward councillors misuse their positions to purge those members of the branch who preferred other candidates and prioritise delivery of services and jobs to those sections of community that preferred them," the newspaper quoted from the report.

“The use of patronage and manipulation of tenders and projects by councillors in order to mobilise support was a frequent feature of the complaints investigated by the task team. The task team also came across instances of corruption where councillors demand bribes to facilitate the rendering of services."

It was recommended that criminal charges and disciplinary action be taken.

The team also recommended that ANC processes in 125 wards be redone.

@ denise.labuschagne.54, you are an idiot. By not voting for the opposition you have increased the overweight for the ANC and you have effectively voted for the party that you publicly denounced namely the ANC.

  • SharonE - 2012-11-18 17:50

Whodunnit??? The Third Force? Rogue Elements? Some people of some description? Heaven forbid, Hendrik Verwoerd?

  • zolisa.dlokovu - 2012-11-18 18:07

The team has finished its task after a year.I doubt that the party will remove these councillors. The process of selecting these councillors was illegal .Some of candidates had criminal records ie fraud, stock theft but are still protected by the ruling party. How can you expect criminals to lead our communities? I strongly believe that a councillor must a least have matric. We need people who can express themselves, who can read municipal documents not people who only drink beer

      deepchund.ramchurren - 2012-11-18 18:53

Well said Zolisa. That is the reason Municipal Managers do as they please. Most ouncillors just keep the chairs warm and mouths zipped, the mouths only at the end of the meeting when there is food to gulp.

Yeah, is this supposed to surprise us? Anyway, it was reported the other day, "R12 per member paid for ghost members".....

      JanGrimbeek - 2012-11-18 18:32

@yaya, yes and the ghost members are alowed to pay that with a R9 + a R3 note. Or they are alowed to pay with a R16 note and get a R4 note back as change.

      alwyn.vantonder - 2012-11-18 23:46

EXACTLY Beverly! We know that the ANC gravy train runs on corruption.. We want to see more action, less talk! 9 MP's from the travel coupon scandel is still employed in government.. after they are convicted criminals! TIt's time the ANC trash must go!

denise, your ramblings are like that of a lunatic. wondering how you think throwing insults around is going to help solve the situation? Face it, the SA of pre94 has gone and will never be back, no matter who is in charge and none of your childish and sometimes downright offensive comments will change that. Before you start insulting me, I am definitely no lover of the ANC, personally I think every single ANC politician should be thoroughly investigated and thrown in jail and all their assets sold off to recover as much of the theft as possible. Furthermore, your previous comment about not voting is rather odd, unless you were planning on voting for the ANC that is, I can't see how not voting for another party will get rid of the ANC.

      denise.labuschagne.54 - 2012-11-18 19:22

what u talking about? insult you? lol.. and i do not care what any of you say, coz you all wrong.. only ones that r right, is the ones know bout the 4th reich .. oh dat rhyme ... .

      denise.labuschagne.54 - 2012-11-18 19:41

if i was u.. i wud give it a thumbs UP.. thumbs up 4 the truth coz truth will prevail

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-11-18 19:43

That's what all lunatics say, everyone else is wrong. Seriously, you need psychiatric help and fast.

  • altus.kirsten - 2012-11-18 19:13

ANC cheat on themselves. That is a first!

  • lesia.mohale - 2012-11-18 20:38

it is better for the ANC to listen to people as they complain. Listening is a critical skill. Nothing can be done at this stage because those guys did all what they wanted and they are deep in the work. How do you remove them because they may be campagining for candidates for Mangaung? It is very diffcult indeed.

      jerry.medina.756 - 2012-11-18 22:55

Dictators listen to no one but themselves. The ANC is drunk with power and are beginning to show strong dictatorship tendencies.

  • Erna - 2012-11-18 21:45

    No honour amongst thieves.

  • alwyn.vantonder - 2012-11-18 22:34

Yet, the ANC leadership claims there's NO division in the ANC.. They insult our common sense and intelligence when they try and tell us that there's no division in the party.. What a bunch of fools! The fact that Zuma says something, doesn't mean it's the truth! It ACTUALLY MEANS it's the EXACT OPPOSITE!

  • Mazwi Biyase - 2012-11-19 00:48

DA is starting to be a serious opposition party which is what SA needs, although I don't think they will win the elections but ANC will be careful and responsible from now on.

  • justsayingagain - 2012-11-19 05:43

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-11-19 09:17

Power means money and position. So they will go to all costs to see that the keep it, even if they have to crook the books. The problem is when they think they are too powerful for the law and the money turns to greed then that is the problem. No party should have the majority rule because you cant control the devils at work. By haviing other parties who have some voting clout will at least keep these devils in their places. Thats why we are fighting for the good of our country, the lives of our children etc because the current party has the majority rule and we can jump all the way to pretoria and cant stop them. They are destroying us and its all through their massive greed for money and power.
