ANC adds finishing touches to Mangaung venue

2012-12-14 19:14

Bloemfontein - Two days before the ANC's elective conference in Mangaung, the party was putting the finishing touches to its venue at the University of the Free State.

There was a strong police presence on the campus in Bloemfontein on Friday. Reporters were taken on a tour of the conference venue.

Scaffolding draped with pictures of former and present African National Congress presidents frames the entrance to the main marquee, which can accommodate more than 6000 delegates.

Inside, it is draped with white, green, gold and black fabric, all lit by chandeliers.

During the heated debates, delegates will be kept cool by 40 portable air-conditioners and 60 fans.

Two big screens will be erected near the stage, and 18 plasma screens around the tent.

On stage, there are enough chairs to seat the entire national executive committee.

The tent has a makeshift wooden floor tiered downwards to the stage, at the foot of which bouquets of flowers are arranged.

President Jacob Zuma and ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe will address delegates in the marquee on Sunday, and it is also where they will nominate their preferred candidates to lead the party.

Afterwards, delegates will move to other parts of the campus where commissions on policy will be held.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said a team had been tasked to deal with emergency situations and evacuation if anything should go wrong.

"This structure has been certified, and emergency situations taken into account," he told reporters during the tour.

Outside the main tent, an area is dedicated to the ANC's "ancestors" who include ANC founder John Dube, anti-apartheid activist lawyer Bram Fischer, Zulu leader Shaka Zulu, and Lesotho's King Moshoeshoe.

Statues of them were provided by the ANC's archive committee, headed by Dali Tambo.

Mthembu said the ANC would like the statues to be placed at a future heritage site in Bloemfontein.

The ANC's national conference starts on Sunday.

I wonder how much money again! And when will the ANC just be a political party?

  • lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-14 19:28

Removing all the chairs, hiding the cake

    honestly..who cares anymore?

  • Mbuso Siera - 2012-12-14 19:44

May God grant the delegates strength,Wisdom, intellect nd more the fate nd future of the ANC nd this country lies on this conference.....great thinking nd strategic mindsets not selfishness nd cheap decisions making to be undertaken.....the media, opposition parties tried to deceive the public by trying to influence the outcome of this conference....this conference os about the country as whole nd voters of the ANC....

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-14 19:53

Well Mbuso we always hope for wisdom, cool heads and people who care. We always get something completely different. The media aren't allowed to vote, or contribute to policy decisions - nor are many of the people the ANC swears they represent. As usual, we'll hear great speeches about what is wrong but little about how and when it will be fixed. We'll be asked, again, to suffer just a little bit longer because great things are coming. It's 18 years later. We are all still waiting.

      judith.taylor.56 - 2012-12-14 20:13

Mbuso - you seem to be lacking the letter a on your keyboard at time. god is irrelevant because he does not exist

  • lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-14 19:50

Ah yes, in true ANC style there'll be chandeliers, flowers and statues whilst the Pres had to allegedly borrow money to feed his progeny. If ANC supporters cannot see the the parallels with the way they spend the country's money, there truly is no hope.

      solo.mathe.5 - 2012-12-14 21:32

Don't try to raise unnecessary hysteria by your inaccurate posts. No tax money was used in either situations.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-14 22:18

Yes of course sol,mathe.5 - they spent all their own money on flights, hotels, walls, German cars, shoes, watches, designer clothing, private schooling, really bad weaves, drugs, watches, Scottish Whisky, tenders, arms deals. From where did all this magnificent opulence come? The ANC are keeping German car manufacturers, Italian and French Designers, Chinese and Indian Manufacturers, Spanish shoemakers, Swiss watchmakers, Scottish whisky and salmon producers eternally employed, whilst our own industries languish. Yet to your face they condemn Colonialism, Western Imperialism etc etc. How can you not see the hypocrisy?

  • Prince Kgwale - 2012-12-14 19:50

ANC will pay all dis or it's gonna be taken from our tax as the current leadership use our money as theirs. Shaka Zulu and Moshoeshoe??? Where's Sekhukhune and other tribal Kings? I understand y they want to Zulufie our country as they already Zulufied ANC.

      judith.taylor.56 - 2012-12-14 20:15

Frankly prince I would hope we can move into the future and dispatch traditional stuff into history so that women can be free

      solo.mathe.5 - 2012-12-14 21:27

Tone down on the tribalism bra. Thx

What a waste of muny. Y don't thy take the time an make a pensioner or a hungry child happy over this festive season. Pathetic assh

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-14 21:07

Yep, they'd do better to go spend that time & money with pensioners, children and the people they swear they represent. Just to remind them of what the last 40yrs of Struggle was all about.

      solo.mathe.5 - 2012-12-14 21:24

They could definitely spend less money on these type of things, but we can also try not to get so ridiculous every time a story about the ANC is posted...

  • JanGrimbeek - 2012-12-14 19:57

After the conference all the delegates will be instructed to update their CV's and qualifications. They will ge required to add: Graduated from University of the Free State 2012. Then SA can say with pride that the whole ANC senior cadre are graduates, hehehe even zuma himself.

  • judith.taylor.56 - 2012-12-14 20:11

    How pseud and how expensive

  • pushocapture.maake - 2012-12-14 20:21

Why can't all 1million members of the ANC vote as individuals. That would be a true democracy in the organisation. It could not be easy to buy all million votes as compared to the 4500 so called delegates dnt you think?

  • siyabonga.phungula1 - 2012-12-14 20:30

let the conference pass i believe its being over marketed. we are hoping for clear and firm policies that wont scare investers but lead to double digit economic growth. south africa needs unity and stabilty. hot heads from all sectors should be ignored.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-14 20:55

But we already have great policies, processes and procedures! Stuff the implementation plan (none), as long as they can keep making speeches and writing all these wondrous things then hey, what's to worry about? Three separate economic development plans (that disagree with each other), no problem, don't worry. Failure to deliver (list from here to the moon), don't worry, we are aware. Mining gone from 64% of GDP to just 18% of GDP - well damn those mining companies, let this be a lesson to them. Manufacturing and Industry going nowhere - well those pesky Chinese and Indians have no labour laws so of course we are better off. 45% Youth unemployed - Nationalise. Too much money leaving the country - put archaic 1980's rules on pension fund investments. See, I did that in 10 minutes. They'll take a week and a gazillion bucks to tell you the same thing :)

      siyabonga.phungula1 - 2012-12-14 22:14

when you talk about manufacturing you are touching sore spot in me, bringing the chinese to SA (i dont mean to be racist) i belive was a mistake, it completely destroyed textile industry, put a lot of people out of jobs.

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-12-14 22:30

and sadly Siyabonga, they have allowed chinese infiltration into the market place because the chinese fund the ANC. Thats who paid for the lavish decor and catering at the conference. They have appeased their masters and let their own people suffer, yet those people will vote them in again! Go figure......

  • sipho.zuma.796 - 2012-12-14 20:35

I hope they don't use tax money to pay for this crap. Seriously it would be unethical for a cent of tax money to be spent on any of this party bull.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-14 23:09

Since when did ethics and morality ever bother Cabinet or the majority of parliamentarians, MECs etc? More to the point, since when did any LAW of country ever get observed by those in power? Court orders handed down and still they ignore them

  • solo.mathe.5 - 2012-12-14 21:19

I'm just glad they didn't use public funds for this event, so have fun and please don't go Juju-baby on each nice...

      Erna - 2012-12-15 05:36

I hope everyone asked for cash up front. We all know the anc's history of non-payment.

  • cathy.dejongh.5 - 2012-12-14 21:24

    Those it in the bathroom

  • manyanyaphiri - 2012-12-14 21:40

Come on, Tribalists! SINCE WHEN WAS HOLY KING SHAKA ZULU ASSOCIATED WITH THE ANC? That anti-adultery King would have executed Jacob Zuma on first sight! I think Dali Tambo and company are only trying at Kgalema Motlanthe's expense to prop up a discredited Jacob Zuma in the shortly-ensuing race for ANC presidency!

At last mangaung 2012 is here, may the bst team win.

  • Suzanne Viljoen - 2012-12-15 10:05

For all I care they could have sat in the veld under trees, taken their chairs and eating pap and braaing their meat on fires. Wasting all that money on Mangaung from which nothing will come. In any case they don't like air conditioning! So saving money on electricity as well!!!

  • dian.bester - 2012-12-15 10:28
