ANC slams Lekota over impeachment call

2012-10-25 09:13

Johannesburg - Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota's call for the impeachment of President Jacob Zuma was "disingenuous", the ANC said on Wednesday.

"His statement is consistent with his personal hatred for President Zuma," ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said.

Mthembu called the Congress of the People an anti-Zuma party with no political programme.

Congress of the People leader Mosiuoa Lekota told MPs on Tuesday the president's office had, on Friday, "defied an order, by the Supreme Court of Appeal, to hand over the abbreviated transcripts of the tapes that permitted criminal charges to be dropped or withdrawn against himself".

He was referring to the refusal to release transcripts of the secret recordings which were the basis of the decision to drop corruption, fraud and racketeering charges against Zuma in early 2009.

Lekota called for impeachment procedures to be instituted against Zuma for his defying a lawful judicial order.

Mthembu said: "The ANC believes that the matter of the handover of tapes is a matter within the jurisdiction of [the] National Prosecution Authority and not the president."

You go for it Mr Lekota !! The Law is "THE LAW"

      Willie - 2012-10-25 09:57

Of course the ANC will trap Lekota because they support all the wrong things

      Vince.York - 2012-10-25 10:08

Jackson, if you so easily disowned your own son, isn't it time to rouse your bleary eyes and brain from the bottle of all bottles and disown this creature and the rest of the gang of criminals you are covering up for?

      luther.kingsley.5 - 2012-10-25 10:18

SA's government are criminals, they should not be impeached they should be locked up.

@ Luther. There is not enough space in The SA jail system!!!

  • mashikwane.sempane - 2012-10-25 09:23

Here we go again COPE hating on our President.

      azande.futhi - 2012-10-25 09:31

is the impeachment call inappropriate in your opion?

      demi.cooke.7 - 2012-10-25 09:31

COPE and the rest of SA....hes not my president, i certainly did not vote for him, the longer he is in the longer the rest of the world are laughing at us...

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-10-25 11:37

Shame, must be hard for you, being brainless and all. Zuma has been ordered by the court to hand over the tapes, COPE only want him to comply with the law, which part of that is so difficult to understand? Zuma belong behind bars, jut as the rest of the ANC do.

      Subtle link Vince!

      steve.gibson.146612 - 2012-10-25 10:04

I wonder if it works on a Spear???

      Vince.York - 2012-10-25 10:06

I begin to wonder if he had been ordered only to hand over certain edited transcripts and tapes if that has all been foregone now and South Africa is entitle to hear and see the FULL VERSIONS, for his having transgressed and lost his opportunity to try and hoodwink the citizens of our nation any further as to all his purported virtually proven crimes. Maybe that link is TOO KIND A REWARD eh?

  • roiyen - 2012-10-25 09:25

\His statement is consistent with his personal hatred for President Zuma,\. Whoever still follows and loves the ANC must be a retarded.

      thapelo.rametsi - 2012-10-25 09:29

Give me an alternative! Please do not say DA as they are racists to the core!!!!!!!!!!

      jeremy.thewasp - 2012-10-25 09:37

Last time I checked the Parliament leader for DA is an African lady called Lindiwe Mazibuko and Patricia de Lille is a coloured lady Mathaithai - You might want to rethink your comment you racist Twat!

      arm.witmens - 2012-10-25 09:38

@mathaitai - and you and the anc arent?. GTFO and GFY

      azande.futhi - 2012-10-25 09:42

@jeremy, Mathaithai's assertion may be justifiable considering that DA has been asked long time ago to transform and show through its leadership that it is not a white male party and they failed to do so.

      christo.d.strauss - 2012-10-25 09:45

Racists? Really? your Racism Card is getting tired - YOU are a Racist for playing the race card as soon as you run out of ideas (which is pretty quick) (Convince Lindiwe of your Racism Claim - she is black and according to you Black people are incapable of racism!). Oh yes and if the DA is not for you there is also COPE - remember?

      william.letsong.5 - 2012-10-25 09:48

thapelo.rametsi please tell us what is so racist about Roiyen's comment? Maybe you are the racist. He never mentioned race in his post. You are an idiotic stupid moron you damn racist fool.

      brad.ken.18 - 2012-10-25 09:51

@Mathaithai - Youre a High School Teacher? No wonder the kids write as if theyre sending Xmit messages. Illiterates cause of idiots like you!

      roiyen - 2012-10-25 09:56

Things will only change for the better once racist like you realise that the DA is not the only opposition party in the country. You are just like your pathetic leaders who cannot debate without pulling the race card you dumb typical Zuma supporter. Helen is not the only opposition leader. There so many other parties. It just shows how little you know you moron.

  • ben.alexander.16144 - 2012-10-25 09:26

The anc is realy bancrupt, to support this dictator in the making is showing everyone they have no ideology other than blaming apartheid, racism, Terror and the whites for all their criminal activities

  • mbuti.manopole.3 - 2012-10-25 09:27

Then what's that Zuma's laywrs hiding? Lekota is ryt Zuma is a fraud ,He is costing us both both economically and pollitically!!! Jackson Mthembu is a drunkyard whoz sufferring frm reality and must shut the f* up

      steve.gibson.146612 - 2012-10-25 09:37

Agreed, what are they hiding? To say the matter is with the NPA also appears to have no merit as Zuma's lawyer has the tapes and Zuma is responsible because he "instructs" his lawyer. Remember, it his lawyer who is refusing to hand over the tapes. This issue should now also be crininalised since they are defying a legal court instruction.

      ross.macdonald.311 - 2012-10-25 10:47

Just maybe there were no tapes, and they made them up to have a reason to let him off, then they can't release them!

  • james.harold.946 - 2012-10-25 09:27

Would it not be wonderful to have a president that is God fearing, Family orientated, humble, educated and with business sense is that to much to ask for? Would it not be wonderful to go up to your Black,White, Yellow or Green Neighbor and say good day how are you and your family today instead of wondering if you are going to get attacked, robed or even just ignored because of your pigmentation. Can we not just live in peace together, love life and enjoy are families and friends for this short period of time that we are on this earth. Is that to much to ask??

      whatda.fuqbro - 2012-10-25 09:42

As long as that neighbour isn't black, green and yellow all in one, because then he's a criminal.

  • Andrea - 2012-10-25 09:27

And so they take care of their own, going where the money is. That pic of our Zoema says it all, not only a criminal, but an illiterate one at that. I wonder how long did it take him to realise that piece of paper was upside down? A poster child for our failing education system.

  • gary.doyle.520 - 2012-10-25 09:27

I enjoy Lekota's outbursts in parliament. He might seem like a nutter but at least he's challenging the criminals at large.

  • azande.futhi - 2012-10-25 09:32

Lekota has a point. The President is disregarding the law. As the first man of the state, he is supposed to be the first one to obey the judiciary.

  • peter.jefferies.90 - 2012-10-25 09:34

No, he is just saying what most of the country is thinking.

  • mavivi.ntshongwana - 2012-10-25 09:36

Zuma must just handover the transcripts of the secret recordings if he is innocent as he claims.

  • heathway.master - 2012-10-25 09:37

When has Zuma or his Government ever worried about such minor and inconsequential issue such as breaking the laws of the country. His fat cousin Zuma broke every fiduciary duty a company director has towards his company Aurora, did not pay his workers, and instead of running the mine, stripped it of all/and any assets still left, and used the money received to make him a multi, multi millionaire, whilst his former employees were starving, and one even committed suicide. He adhered to no safety requirements, whereas other mines were shut down for extended periods by Minister of Mines, if every /or any safety laws were not fully complied with. Why should he care, in the slightest, as number one was financially secure for his life, and possibly generations thereafter. Maybe this sort of behaviour runs in families, due to genetic throwbacks.

  • Kalari - 2012-10-25 09:39

  • sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-10-25 09:44

interesting. that would be a disaster for Zuma and NPA.

  • gregory.jurgens - 2012-10-25 09:47

      azande.futhi - 2012-10-25 09:55

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-25 10:14

I would not be surprised if we get another Zuma cartoon from Zapiro soon.

  • alex.nkosi.39 - 2012-10-25 09:58

What a pathetic and selfish leader! The so-called leader of cope lekota have crossed the red line to call for impeachment against president zuma, who're you to call for impeachment? At the same time, we can see a lot of negative comments against president here, you white guys are full of hatred and conspiracy against our will and democratic system in mzanzi,so let me give my clearly advice that you're rich now because you robbered and stealed all resources of this country during your apartheid rule,so don't blame on any person about corruption, because we all know that what made you white guys rich is corruption of tha past.

      aspruyt - 2012-10-25 10:07

Too bad "our will" is corrupt and against the law in most cases. What made "us" rich is hard work. Self entitled ass wipe.

      carl.traut - 2012-10-25 11:42

Ah yes....Once again the sins of our forefathers come to haunt us. What part of Democracy don't you understand ? It would appear all of it. No-one hates Zuma, they hate the fact he is allowing nepotism and corruption to kill this country, and as usual the uneducated masses (Exactly how the ANC likes them) follow the empty promises and lies. How can people be starving, schools have no books, and no running water to houses, but JZ's personal house can cost us R200m+. Please open your eyes and stop staring at the wall of your own idiocy.

      alex.nkosi.39 - 2012-10-25 13:30

@carl.trout, who created all these uneducated masses and mess in everywhere, because you did'nt allow us to enroll in universities, ande don't ever blame on any one because its your forefathers legacy.

  • deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-25 09:59

Contempt of a court order can lead to an arrest and overnight stay in jail. Who will be brave enough for it, probably only someone in Cape Town? The court should be followed by all, especially those in power.

  • asivhanga - 2012-10-25 10:03

I don't think Zuma is the one to hand over the tapes, but the Npa.

Read who has the tapes and then find out who instructed the person who has the tapes!!!!!!!!!

Well said, but why has CASAC and the ConCourt and all other authorities & organisations that are meant to be looking after the interests of South Africa and her citizens not done anything yet? BIG UP Lekota - about the only breakaway ANC member that had the heart and and soul of all South Africa and citizens at heart all along so it seems! :D The objective and independent arm of the law, 'the Police' are meant to kick in automatically when laws are not upheld - not wait around directionless waiting for the criminals bidding to start to perceive what they are all about.nxa Too much champagne at tax payers expense maybe?

  • aspruyt - 2012-10-25 10:05

Mr Lekota, I take my hat off to you sir. Zuma and whole ANC is a farce!

  • Karabo Phetoane - 2012-10-25 10:09

Lekota always come to parliament drunk and bark at everything that is tabled before the house.Alcohol detectors must be at parliament entrances to make sure he never sets his feet in the house.

      Vince.York - 2012-10-25 10:11

eishhh, Jackson Mthembu, sonny boy Tony Ngeni and 99% of the rest of the ANC-PF will be locked up permanently sweetheart, if that is enforced.

      carl.traut - 2012-10-25 11:36

It would be one Hell of an empty parliament then !

  • robynne.els.1 - 2012-10-25 10:11

Lekota stands up and he is filled with hatred for zuma, DA stand against ANC and they are racist, people comment on news24 about how corrupt ANC are and they are silver spoon children of apartheid! Anybody else see the trend?

  • Nkhangwe - 2012-10-25 10:19

ANC should understand that the tapes are not wanted only by DA,we would like to have closure on the matter as a nation,we are under impression that all it was a lies to get Zuma in the throne and its even making more sense after sports minister claimed that the president thrive by corruption, sometimes times ANC should forget about their political fights with other parties and consider clarifying the people that votes them based on trust

  • amanda.joubert.5 - 2012-10-25 10:35

Watch this space - next week the tapes will be reported stolen? Ha Ha

  • issa.kabudula - 2012-10-25 10:46

South Africa got all the necessities of development but its politicians have to be blamed, they waste good time on useless things which can be debated for 20 years and bring NO development to the country or the people, the tape story of Mr. Lekota being one we failed to arrest Zuma in 2009 and we want to arrest him today? Lets talk development; Youth unemployment Women empowerment Job creation Youth & women in Politic and the whole lot other initiatives.

  • martin.neate - 2012-10-25 11:43

"disingenuous" sums up tha ANC to a tee,i think thy should use this word VERY sparingly Adjective disingenuous (comparative more disingenuous, superlative most disingenuous) Not noble; unbecoming true honor or dignity; mean; unworthy; fake or deceptive. Not ingenuous; not frank or open; uncandid; unworthily or meanly artful. [quotations ?] Assuming a pose of naivete to make a point or for deception.

  • wackidmaledu - 2012-10-25 11:51

Therefore the President should call on the NPA to abide by the prescroptions of the Courts and command them to uphold the Constitution of the Republic and the Principles it enshrines....COPE leader is merely frustrated by the silence of the President in a high profile case such as this that involves the CEO of the land....his silence considering the contents of those files says a lot about himself as president after all the tapes are about him and his acquittal why is it so difficult that he as commander in CHief command the NPA do disclose the contents of those tapes so that the nation is assured that yes he is not corrupt!Spin-doctors are hired just to distract us with pointless statements of pointing fingers and diverting blame...THE PRESIDENT MUST STAND FIRM AND ASK THE NPA TO GIVE THOSE TAPES FOR SCRUTINY EVEN IF IT IS NOT TO THE DA BUT TO A COURT OF EQUITABLE MAGNITUDE TO VARIFY THE CONTENTS THEREOF!bloody skelm!
