ANC trying to deflect attention - Zille

2013-01-23 14:48

Johannesburg - The ANC is trying to deflect attention away from the fact that millions have been siphoned out of state-owned enterprises for a series of The New Age business breakfasts, DA leader Helen Zille said on Wednesday.

"This [Telkom's involvement] was not a sponsorship. When someone sponsors an event, they pay the cost of part or the entire event," Zille said.

"It has now emerged that these costs were more than covered by the ticket sales. So what was Telkom doing giving R1m to a private company owned by a major benefactor of President [Jacob] Zuma and the ANC?"

Convenient cover-up

Zille asked if the sponsorship was merely a convenient cover-up for this.

Earlier, the ANC and its Women's League demanded an apology from Zille, accusing her of lying about not knowing that Telkom sponsored a The New Age breakfast briefing she attended last year.

"It is the view of the ANC that on numerous occasions Helen Zille has been found wanting when it comes to telling the truth," spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement on Wednesday.

"She has been masquerading as a so-called 'voice of reason' whilst she has been distorting the truth and misleading the public."

On Monday, Zille pulled out of a The New Age business breakfast, following reports that the event was funded with public money. She said she and other senior DA officials had previously spoken at the breakfasts under the assumption that they were funded by The New Age and members of the public, who bought tickets to attend.

"Now that it has come to light that the breakfasts are funded by public money via the SOEs [state-owned enterprises] to the tune of millions of rand, the DA cannot continue to participate."

In a statement explaining her decision, Zille said she pulled out after reading an article in City Press newspaper, in which it reported that Eskom, Telkom and Transnet spent millions on the sessions, and the SABC broadcast them free of charge.

"These breakfasts must be very profitable for The New Age, which is owned by the Gupta family, who are in turn vocal supporters and funders of the ANC and President Jacob Zuma.

"It is not acceptable or defensible for public money to be used to bankroll a privately owned newspaper, and indirectly the coffers of the ANC."

Zille's 'lies and deceit'

Asked during an interview with Eyewitness News whether she had thanked Telkom at a The New Age business breakfast she participated in, Zille said she could not recall doing so.

"I cannot personally recall thanking anybody... but it was a very long time ago and I have many, many engagements every day," she said.

On Tuesday, The New Age released a video clip on its website of Zille thanking Telkom for sponsoring a New Age business breakfast in Cape Town in February last year.

Mthembu said: "Her [Zille's] lies bring into question the extent to which South Africans can take the Democratic Alliance seriously. This is proof that the DA cannot be trusted."

The ANCWL said Zille had revealed her "true deceitful nature".

"It is disgusting that the leader of the opposition can lie to the public with such ease, making such contradictory statements..." ANCWL spokesperson Troy Martens said in a statement.

She said it had never been a secret who sponsored the breakfasts.

"It is a shame that Zille is trying to discredit these revolutionary and progressive sessions with her lies and deceit, irresponsibly acting as some kind of victim."

  • nikondaniel - 2013-01-23 14:58

Is there any IQ above average in the ANC?

      nikondaniel - 2013-01-23 14:59

I mean honestly, say sound like a bunch of high school morons arguing on the playgrounds, lol.

      thandiwe.ngema.71 - 2013-01-23 15:00

ANC are crooks - we all know it. We now need a grassroots campaign with leaflets pointing out to society's poorest that the ANC have been stealing their future, potential prosperity and money for services.

      Jo - 2013-01-23 15:03

More public money being used by the ANC for their own means? It's almost every day now that we hear of expensive cars, houses and shopping trips sponsored by our tax money. How much longer can this last? The poor cannot be neglected much longer!

      silenta.solly - 2013-01-23 15:11

hahahaha if she didn't lie about knowing about the funders of the breakfast, can you imagine the comments on this article hahaha white people are so predictable, anyway refer to my comment yesterday where i said Zille is lying she knew exactly the funders of these breakfast and she kept quiet because she was marketing the DA.....

      kuno.tschumi.5 - 2013-01-23 15:14

@meneer - NO, but many many below average. As i always say an adult goldfish has an IQ of 10 and most of the cANCer could pass as baby goldfish... cANCer if you need this statement explained to you please contact me...

      georgi.mcguire - 2013-01-23 15:19

ANC and The New Age; you should perhaps get off your high horse and explain to SA public exactly how these breakfast were/are funded sinstead of looking to the DA for appologies and blaming competitors of jelousy Your diversion tactics are weak. We are still waiting for your side of the story.

      lucy.bush.9231 - 2013-01-23 15:35

Its incredible how we make everything a racial issue. If that was one of the black ANC woman who pulled out on the same moral grounds, it would have been a nothing issue...or what,,?? I’m just sick up to my eyeballs with this bl@@dy government and their lavish , nonsense lifestyles..while the poor for whom they constantly profess to care about, just continue to get poorer...

      elizabeth.smit.509 - 2013-01-23 16:01

If you listen to their arguments, nothing makes sense. The way everyone jumps in and comments stupidly, makes me shake my head, and depressed, and ashamed that we are led by such. I'm no fan of Zille's but you don't find anyone giving a solid sensible response to what the ANC regards as attack on the party, at no given time!!!it is always about the person, not the facts. Pickwickian sense- don't even need grade 12 to have that.

Tell it like it is DA, deflect deflect, the truth already came out

  • stirrer.stirrer - 2013-01-23 15:02

I made a quick calculation. The venue cost (I used the CTICC) and ticket prices are publicized. Assuming a very liberal R150/head for banquet equipment hire, R200/head for the catering itself, and 2000 tickets sold, the income is roughly R2.5 million from "sponsorships" and ticket sales, and the expenses roughly R1 million (venue, banquet & sound equipment hire, catering). This leaves a cool profit of R1.5 million to NewAge/Guptas funded from taxpayers money, without them spending a single cent of their own money. So I'm with Helen on this one! There is a huge difference between Telkom etc sponsoring the food or sound equipment, and them bankrolling an underhanded funnelling of taxpayers money to the politically connected.

      mc.segal.5 - 2013-01-23 16:37

Just wish Telkom would spend some cash employing technicians. I Have Had only 40 out of 50 days service from them,,,,,,After throwing my toys they repaired the break in my line within ten minutes.(I threw the toys, they fixed the fault)

  • mike.plansera - 2013-01-23 15:02

Hellen said this, Hellen said that. Please address the real issue of why public money is being siphoned off to a privately held newspaper. Another one for the Public Protector. In a few years the Public Protector will be the biggest employer in South Africa.

  • graham.katz - 2013-01-23 15:05

Zille is being deceitfull ? All she said was that she could not remeber thanking Telkom at a breakfast almost a year ago ?? How is that a lie?? I think that the lies and deciet come from the ruling party .. who is using tax payer money to fund their political party .. and last time i checked.. thats a no no .. They take money from goverment owned companies.. sponser the breakfast .. those proceeds go to a company who then funds the Ruling party's political campain ... Now if you ask me from a bookkeeping perspective ... that sounds like money laundering to me. Who is more at fault here ? Zille or the corrupt officials laundering the money ?

      Gideon.Viljoen - 2013-01-23 15:17

Showing face there last year did not get her or the DA, money in there pockets from the Tax payer, I believe the ANC was also there right? Contradicting "why want the ANC to make the DA look like they are the bad ones, the ANC was there as well" this year the ANC alone is coming back for a second helping of our Tax money, you got a one track mind and cant see the hole picture

      willie.schoeman.144 - 2013-01-23 15:17

Who's leader sam ? Last time i checked i was South African .. and JZ was the leader of it .. So if you are syaing JZ is a lie and a fake .. I will tend to agree with your comment

      kuno.tschumi.5 - 2013-01-23 15:38

@willie - maybe you need to explain the term money laundering to the cANCer. Its not putting coins into the washing machine, adding a cap of omo and put it on a spin cycle. Money laundering or not, in a way or another these morons, thieves, criminals will take our tax money.

  • PointBlank - 2013-01-23 15:05

This is typical of mob mentality that is rife in the ANC, have you noticed how many sections of the ANC come out and with venom attack anyone they don't agree with? The ANCWL, ANC, ANCYL all jumping in and spewing nonsense. Like when you engaging someone on twitter from the ANC watch how they always respond to you and copy about 10 names in as well, before you know it you being spammed by tens of ANCYL twits.. This is the same mentality that you see in protests and riots.. And "community justice".

      richard.botha1 - 2013-01-31 07:06

Does not make a difference, she lied, she should resign

  • PointBlank - 2013-01-23 15:06

      bobby.rosewood.1 - 2013-01-23 16:10

It was not sponsored, it was all paid for already by participants, and the TV broadcast was done free, as well. The "sponsoring' is rather a donation from Eskom/Telkom/Transnet to the New Age. If it was sponsored, no problem, although I wonder why? we can hardly buy our electricity form anyone else then Eishkom, so what are they going on sponsoring? They want us to use LESS of their product, not more!

      pierre.nortje.581 - 2013-01-23 17:40

      guy.mullins1 - 2013-01-23 19:12

Glenda, do you not understand that Zille only withdrew from these breakfasts once she realized that the Telkom sponsorship was a scam. When she thanked Telkom last year, she was under the impression that they were real sponsors and not money launderers.

  • simon.berry.925 - 2013-01-23 15:09

I'm sure the DA is aware of that.

  • Erna - 2013-01-23 15:40

I tend to agree with Zille. There is a huge difference between sponsoring and donating. In a nutshell - its a parastatal, using public funds to make a huge donation to a newspaper owned by the guptas, who in turo help to support zuma's lavish lifestyle, and also make donations to the anc. You tell me who'se benefiting?

  • tuscartau.tau - 2013-01-23 15:40

Totally agree with Zille. The ANC moves from deflection to deflection, but will never own up to the fact that billions of Rands have been siphoned off the public purse. • stephan.butler.14 - 2013-01-23 16:19

The ANC take and use tax payers money for their pleasure and luxary houses , vehicals and entertainment. No wonder the state hospitals and roads and all govermental services are a mess. I mean why do we need hospitals roads, houses for homeless or even food and jobs for the country? The ANC is living a nice luxury life. It a democratic country so let the ANC turn South Africa into Zimbabwe.

      willie.schoeman.144 - 2013-01-23 16:33

      I am a South African ... can i take it back ?

Why so much bright light shed on Premier Hellen Zille's 'lies'?I mean, she never said she didn't do it,but rather that she wouldn't say she did or not,as she has so many engagements on a daily basis. So,by your own accounts, don't distort Premier Hellen Zille's facts. We are being lied to everyday and when we question it suddenly it was a misinterpretation or it was quoted 'out of context'.Why crucify her for 'lying' once in a blue moon?

  • michael.konings.7 - 2013-01-23 16:29

The ANC was the future, the DA is the future.

      Gideon.Viljoen - 2013-01-23 16:45

Thats it, you said it short and sweet, to the point. 2014 is just around the corner

  • brian.dlamini - 2013-01-23 16:33

All of u saying she didn't lie u are idiots of politics.. No politician will admit 2 lying instead they deflect (convenient amnesia) like Helen just did. Let's get to the real question then (for the more intelligent defenders). Her thanking telkom at the time whether she remembers or not (its now proven), why did she not take the same stance then? She is after all opposed 2 SOE's sponsoring the breakfasts

      willie.schoeman.144 - 2013-01-23 16:45

Okay .. you say she lied.. bad Hellen .. very bad girl for not being honest about who you thanked for paying for your breakfast. But how about the ANC rather tell us why millions upon millions are being sponsored or given to a company ... Might i add.. tax payer money. And then that company giving the ANC political party .. ( nothing to do with government FYI)...millions upon millions. No wonder the ANC can afford to buy everyone at a protest against the DA a streetwise 2. So why don't the ANC answer to laundering tax payer money into their own coffers .. and then Hellen will say why she thanked Telkom for her morning cup of coffee

      Gideon.Viljoen - 2013-01-23 16:46

      Amnesia R250 000 000

      pws69 - 2013-01-23 17:03

      1. She thanked only TELKOM, a LIST PUBLICLY TRADE BUSINESS. 2. She stated that she was under the impression that the sponsorships were there to cover COSTS, not make millions for the ANC aligned GUPTAs, and no doubt a fair amount funneled to the ANC as well. 3. I would guess at the time she made the VERY serious mistake of believing anything the ANC has their hand in would be done with integrity. For this she deserves to be severely admonished, as she should have know better.

  • grant.bursey - 2013-01-23 16:46

And then brian.dlamini came in and missed the point completely. That deflection the ANC just pulled ... you were side stepped mate.

  • Boika Function QJ Jakuja - 2013-01-23 16:48

not to say i'm defending da ANC bt Zille is playing da vry same game tht other politicians play nd its called 'politics',its jst sad tht her puppets dnt c tht yet..hahhahahhahahahahahahahahahahhaha

      willie.schoeman.144 - 2013-01-23 16:54

Yes .. politics is very much a game ... But there is a difference between corrupt politicians cheating so that they will win and politicians that play the game in order to make a difference

  • suleiman.hoosen - 2013-01-23 16:51

Zilla got caught out fair and square. See the vid where see thanks Telkom for sponsoring a breakfast here: Seems she might be just another politician after all. :)

      pws69 - 2013-01-23 17:04

Telkom is NOT a SOE. FFS, it is NOT that hard to understand.
