Cape Town - The ANC has welcomed moves by Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to brief MPs on South Africa's military deployment in the Central African Republic.

ANC Chief Whip Mathole Motshekga said on Tuesday the minister had requested a chance to brief the National Assembly, likely on 23 April.

The joint standing committee on defence would also discuss the controversial mission on Thursday. It claimed the lives of 13 South African troops near Bangui on 23 March.

Motshekga's office said the minister's wish to brief MPs on the matter showed how seriously she took parliamentary oversight.

"This will afford parties an opportunity to express their views on this important matter."

Earlier, it reiterated the ANC in Parliament's support for President Jacob Zuma's decision in January to send more troops to the CAR.

The fatalities, the worst South Africa has suffered in combat since 1994, have cast a spotlight on the mission, with critics saying it amounted to propping up now ousted leader Francois Bozize.

Zuma did not seek prior parliamentary approval, but informed the legislature in a letter to Speaker Max Sisulu.

The ANC has criticised a motion tabled by the Democratic Alliance calling for the withdrawal of all South African troops from the CAR.
