Johannesburg - The ANC has won two of the three municipal ward by-elections held in the Eastern and Western Cape, the Independent Electoral Commission said on Thursday.

The ANC won the two seats in the Eastern Cape during the by-elections on Wednesday, the IEC said.

The DA took the third seat in the Western Cape.

Voter turnout averaged at about 34.97%.

The wards contested in the Eastern Cape were Ward 17, in the Elundini Municipality [Mount Fletcher], and Ward Five in Ntabankulu.

ANC candidates Vuyiswa Nthuthu and Vusumzi Macebo were elected as the new councillors for the wards.

Marita Johanna Petersen, of the DA, was elected the new councillor in Ward 68, in Cape Town.

The ANC still winning anything shows how far removed from reality the majority of South Africans are. You have to be totally and utterly ignorant to still vote for them.

      Indeed! How sad

    Democracy at its best!

You are dreaming if you called this democracy.

Insanity. Is this like you saying BS when I mentioned Lockerbie? Gadhafi handed over the 2 agents for trial. He also paid damages to the more than 250 families of the victims. Reality sometimes is very strange. Try and come to terms with it.

@Gerhard The official verdict on Lockerbie is the biggest crock that the US and UK governments have put before us in recent years, besides the Iraq war of course. Curiously both Iraq and Lockerbie involve intelligence agencies manipulating or inventing evidence in order not to pursue justice but rather a covert foreign policy agenda. Abdelbaset al-Megrahi never wavered in his denial of causing the Lockerbie disaster: now Scottish legal experts say they believe him Dr Hans Köchler, one of the UN observers at the trial, expressed serious doubts about the fairness of the proceedings and spoke of a "spectacular miscarriage of justice" His lawyers claim that vital documents, which emanate from the CIA and relate to the Mebo timer that allegedly detonated the Lockerbie bomb, were withheld from the trial defence team. Tony Gauci, chief prosecution witness at the trial, is alleged to have been paid $2 million for testifying against Megrahi. Mebo's owner, Edwin Bollier, has claimed that in 1991 the FBI offered him $4 million to testify that the timer fragment found near the scene of the crash was part of a Mebo MST-13 timer supplied to Libya.

lets see how dedicated you actually are to finding the truth since you claim to know what happened.

Seriously Graziella are u living in a dreamland?? What democracy?? Look at what has happened to this country since after Mandela stepped down. The ANC is running this country further and further into the ground. Perfect example limpopo completly bankrupt from all the corruption and yet the ANC have done nothing to stop it. the only reason ppl are voting the anc is because the get brainwashed and get told if they dont vote anc and if the DA come into power that apartheid will come back which is complete crap. The sooner the anc are voted out of power the better it will be for the south african ppl.

These seats weren't "won", they were retained. There is a vast difference, stupid news 24 reporter.
