ANC wins Diepkloof by-election

2012-04-26 16:31

Johannesburg - Even though it was DA whistleblowers that led to the sacking of an ANC councillor for alleged corruption - and a vacant ward - the residents of Ward 28 in Diepkloof, Soweto, again voted for an ANC candidate.

By-election results released on Thursday by the Electoral Commission show that ANC candidate Batetiye Brenda Marule received 2 641 votes, compared to Democratic Alliance candidate Rachael Molepo's 567 in Wednesday's by-election, in the contest to fill the seat left vacant by fired ANC councillor Thabo Nkhasi.

Nkhasi allegedly sold council-owned land to a church for R15 000, which DA councillors Tony Molefe and Tshepo Mhlongo made public, leading to Nkhasi being removed and the vacancy arising.

In the by-election, African Christian Democratic Party candidate Khayizeni Shibambo received 37 votes, Azanian People's Organisation candidate Michael Peter 20, Congress of the People candidate Peter Mamabolo 10, Sipho Zungu of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania 61 and Thabo Molefe of the Operation Khanyisa Movement 45.

'Resounding victory'

The ANC said in Johannesburg said it was very happy to have the ward back.

"The ANC has recorded yet another resounding victory during a local government by-election in ward 28 at Diepkloof," said Jolidee Matongo, ANC Johannesburg region spokesperson.

He volunteered that their previous representative had been sacked for corruption and said: "The ANC wants to take this opportunity to thank the people of ward 28 for once again giving the ANC an overwhelming majority.

"We promise that we will not disappoint the people but will serve them with dignity and humility."

The total valid votes were 3 381 out of 3 423, but only 23.73% of the registered voters voted.

Matongo said the low voter turnout was because it was a work day for most people.

"We had hoped for 10% but we went up to 16%, which has given us much encouragement," said DA provincial leader John Moodey.

"People don't just on one occasion change their allegiance, their political home," he said.

"But we found during our campaign over the last week that there was a very warm reception and that has been setting the ground for the way forward."

Moodey said that Molepo would eventually stand a very good chance of winning the ward.

Goes to show the narrow-mindedness of the voters

      Graham - 2012-04-26 17:03

Well I hope the 16% that voted DA tell all their friends to do so next time

      Christelle - 2012-04-26 17:26

"Corruption" No comprehension of this term!!!! So, the voters are sending out a message to the ANC - carry on screwing us out of money - its fine by us. We will carry on living in the squatter camps in Diepkloof and blame it on apartheid.

  • Shirley - 2012-04-26 16:42

Before you know it the same "voters" will be protesting and creating havoc about service delivery! Some people just never learn!

  • Twain - 2012-04-26 16:43

When they finally wake up it'll be too late.

  • Glyn - 2012-04-26 16:45

A gain of 6% by the DA is encouraging. Well done DA! Time the anc got a real fright! Vote DA to give the anc a really big fright!

      Inja - 2012-04-26 20:20

6% by any standard is a fail

  • Thebe - 2012-04-26 16:47

Wonder if Diepkloof people will still be surprised if the new councilor turns out to be as corrupt as the one that got replaced.

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-04-26 16:48

Dignity and humility? I did not know those words existed in the ANCs vocabulary.

  • Gavin - 2012-04-26 16:49

SNAFU = situation normal all f'ed up.

  • Mhlonso - 2012-04-26 16:51

    We blacks we are stu.....d

      Sharon - 2012-04-26 17:14

When people start voting with their heads and not their hearts, and voting for the future, not the past - that is when things will start to improve.

      Christelle - 2012-04-26 17:40

I think you misunderstand what Mhlonso is saying - unless I am misunderstanding him....

      deabreu - 2012-04-26 17:41

Mhlonso - That is not true. Only racists are stupid. Gert, piss off.

      Sibusiso - 2012-04-26 17:55

Mhlonso is not black , I don't think one would call his mom and dad stu...d

      Glyn - 2012-04-26 19:28

@Mhlonso - Wrong! Blacks are not stupid, anc voters are stupid! So... 16% of the voters voted for the DA. Now do NOT call the DA a Whites only party. It is probably the most intergrated party of all in the country. Vote DA for the future!

  • Michael - 2012-04-26 16:56

Dont you ever have a service delivery protest again....dont even @@@@@@@ dare to barrackade the highway. Serve you right then. Enjoy every single moment without water, sanitation and decent education. Every decent moment in filling your'e leaders pockets with BMW's and Sandton houses. Point.

      Christelle - 2012-04-26 17:41

Michael, they will still do it!!!!!Sharon made a good point above. Vote with your heads, not your hearts.

  • frits.aab - 2012-04-26 17:02

Here is a comparison between the 2009 election and the bielection results. Port Alfred: DA from 11.71% to 15,34% Cape Town Ward: DA from 46.17% to 59.36% (Bigest gain in Gugs from 1.2% to 16%) Kirkwood EC: DA from 41.06% to 52,15% Johannesburg Ward Diepkloof: DA from 8.23% to 16,77% Grabouw: DA from 49.08% to 51,59% It seems the ANC is starting to drop there tradional areas!!!

      Michael - 2012-04-26 17:33

@Frits, it tells such aan amazing story. After all, what happened in Diepsloot, sanitation, water shortages and no education development, from 8 to 16, its a 50% but its such a gap........ And stille they vote ANC. So suffer then, thats what you want.

      Tinus - 2012-04-26 17:44

\If you are a big big tree, we are a small axe, ready to cut you down\ - bob marley. Little by little the black people in this country are getting gatvol of empty promises, corruption and especially the rising cost of living. The anc is doomed.

      Christelle - 2012-04-26 18:07

How does one eat an elephant - One bite at a time. Tinus, I tend to agree with you. It is a slow process, but it is happening!

  • Dalai - 2012-04-26 17:14

Stupidity voting the same party and expecting different results! After "freedom" day they will be toytoying!

      Inja - 2012-04-26 20:21

It is their dempocratic right, you can sit on your head and clap your feet, that will not change.

  • Gert - 2012-04-26 17:15

      Glyn - 2012-04-26 21:44

  • Gert - 2012-04-26 17:19

Now blame Zille's refugee comments lol

      Jeffrey - 2012-04-26 17:25

DA won Grabouw again. So Zille's refugee comments had nothing to do with any results.

      Phiwe - 2012-04-26 20:38

And you've overlooked the fact that Grabouw is in the Western Cape! We'll only see the real impact of her words when she tries her hand in the Eastern Cape. That is where she should be most hated for the comments.

  • Arnold - 2012-04-26 17:22

It annoys me no end when on hears of all the "government" handouts. The money comes from a small percentage of tax payers ,less whats disappearing into the "cracks" in large sums.Is there any government run entity that actually is self-sustainable, profit generating without also having to be bailed out by the tax payer.unfortunately the great unwashed do not see or maybe do not want to see this.I am actually getting a little tired of subsidizing these leeches.

  • Heiku - 2012-04-26 17:25

According to Einstein that is the definition of insanity. Heard it here first folks, Diepkloof residents are insane.

      Heiku - 2012-04-26 17:37

They are already in the asylum. ANC's problem, not mine.

  • Hugh - 2012-04-26 17:27

Again a minority of voters vote in a councilor. I think it is about time that a vpote should only be considered valid for a voter turn out of 50%

  • Bob - 2012-04-26 17:28

The stupid, being led by the stupid!

  • Bob - 2012-04-26 17:32

The Oscar for the "BEST WORD OF THE YEAR" for 2012 goes to .....: Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc-ra-cy) :- A system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers. The problems we face today are there because... The people who work for a living, are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

  • Andrew - 2012-04-26 17:48

Keep voting for the corrupt ANC at your own peril. It just shows the level of the voters interlect!!!! Zero!!!

      itani.rasalanavho - 2012-04-27 07:41

Yes it is due to the intellect level of the voters, zero thanks to the government which the-double-faced-NP-now-changed-to-DA was part of.

  • Phiwe - 2012-04-26 17:49

the DA and all it's supporters you have to be honest with yourselves instead of chalking this one down to unfair elections, or stupidity of voters (which is insulting), or what ever excuses you come up with to justify the DA no winnind despite the alleged ANC's inappropriateness. What is it about the DA that they cannot penetrate that critical mass? Voters like what they hear more than what the facts are, the DA dwells on facts and ignores the fact that politics is a multifaceted game. The ANC have masterred this - while they handle facts they also tell people want they want to hear and what they want to hear is that they are working on something new to try and improve the situation... And be honest, the only thing you'll ever hear from the DA for elections goes something like "dont vote for the ANC because of XYZ and last year XYZ amounts of money were stolen through corruption, or mispent, or whatever else. Ja sure, stats are nice but what will you do differently and unfortunately the DA has no answer to this question. Zille is a journalist...just because she was a brilliant writer doesnt make her a brilliant leader!

      Phiwe - 2012-04-26 17:53

the truth is people wouldnt mind to vote for the DA, they wouldnt mind voting for a white person just as long as you can do the job better than other man. Also the DA is pretty snooty, with everyone including their supporters thinking they are better than everyone else. Arrogance never won anyone any favours. The ANC is approachable, the ANC is friendly and welcoming, it feels like home. It's not uncommon to do to a local bar and find an ANC official sitting there mingling with friends. The ANC is the party of the people, white the DA presents themselves as snobs.

      1amAlan - 2012-04-26 18:09

I wouldn't say stupidity as much as I would say ignorant. How many times do you have to get screwed over before you realise that a different approach should be taken? ANC uses that excuse of the "DA arrogance" as much as the nationalists used the "SWART GEVAAR". We've just replaced one corrupt white nationalist government with an even more corrupt black nationalist government. The only difference here is that the ANC is not in any way threatened by the likes of the opposition as the ignorant will keep supporting them. The problem for them is that their support basis will die off eventually and the youth will start supporting something with real teeth.

      dave.prinsloo - 2012-04-26 18:25

\we want dirty water, we want squalor, we want ANC\. How is that not stupidity? Idiot.

      Phiwe - 2012-04-26 18:34

my point is maybe peopel feel there is no other alternative other than to hope that the ANC will get it right! Most people want the ANC to get it right and the has the luxury of being given to opportunity to try and try again. Certainly the DA does not offer any alternative plans, like I said they hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. There's only so much support you will get by identifying other people's flaws, people ultimately want to know what will the DA do that is so much better. Once you actually read the DA's economic plans you begin to understand that they are clueless, atleast Zille is. @Prinsloo - well i'm sure your frustrations are shared by the DA and unfortunately is comes look down on the very people you want to take the DA to prominence. Good luck with that strategy! The things you listen probably rank lowly in people's priorities of what they expect from their politicians, what people want more than anything are jobs to pay for food, to pay for cleaner water supplies, and other things. And the DA has no job plan, the ANC at least (whether it is a good plan or not), at least they brign something new to the table everytime. I vote for the ANC and I'd say I'm not quite stupid...but i can appreciate the people of your sort will look down on me because you're an insuferable snob.

      Inja - 2012-04-26 20:26

The truth hurts Vor, people do not want to hear, you are 100% correct. I have been staing in a DA ward in Newcastle, what are they doing for me despite the fact that their slogan was keep your ward DA. They have not done anything here. I will vote for the ANC

      1amAlan - 2012-04-26 21:35

Exactly what plan is that VOR? The DA says create a climate that makes it attractive for people to invest and create jobs. All I hear from the ANC is "WE PLAN TO CREATE JOBS". How exactly are they going to create jobs? How exactly is it attractive to invest in this country with the rampant corruption and crime? How do you tell an investor to come in and take a chance on us when strikes hold them to ransom? When we don't like something we set about making our point by burnig, damaging and destroying. Call me unpatriotic, but if I had money to invest it certainly wouldn't be in this country under these conditions. We certainly can't do this on our own. Sanctions hurt us and brought the nats to the table and we have never really recovered from that. Without stability and investment you are not going to create crap.

      Glyn - 2012-04-26 21:37

VOR - you are clueless! Is it not amazing that all these anc trolls do not have ant personal details on their Facebook profiles? They are anc employees!

      Glyn - 2012-04-26 21:48

"Stupidity of the voters" is not insulting---- it is the truth! To be honest... the anc is dishonest!

      paul.prinsloo3 - 2012-04-27 12:18

      Christelle - 2012-04-26 18:10

Glen, in a normal society yes. But unfortunately, there are none as blind as the ones who will not see.

  • Frank - 2012-04-26 18:10

With this small victory, we (the ANC) are sending a msge to the opposition parties that we will rule until Jesus, the son of God comes back. They say never say never but they will never rule this country. We will out number them forever. AMAMDLA!!! AWETHU!!!

  • frikkie.botes - 2012-04-26 18:37

The blacks will rather die in their anc ignorance than to vote for something better. Look again the next election, the anc will again get more than 60% votes. even if they starve they will keep on voting ANC . that is why democracy is a satan concept.

      Christelle - 2012-04-26 18:54

Frikkie, I agree with your first comments, but democracy is completely ascewed by numbers in our country. In a real democracy you have a constant change in government. We do have a numbers problem in our country

  • dave.prinsloo - 2012-04-26 18:40

Okay FRANK, and all other anc idiots, I've been hiding, but time has come to let you know - I AM JESUS THE SON OF GOD AND I AM BACK YOU CAN START VOTING DA NOW! Halefarkingluya!!!!

  • nkadimeng - 2012-04-26 19:47

Well much better that way, it would very stupid for any black person to vote a white person when they have had more than 2 decades to better all people's lives, but rather chose to better the minority. Most White South African people cant be trusted, history has it, and even today's lives, we still see it, we live with them, work with them, eat with them, engage with on penitent issues that affect this country and their pretences leave much to be desired for. Even if i was not there during the apartheid times, but i certain enough to have to have experienced its aftershock. I would rather live in the false promises, at least no one is one is being tortured than sharing a plate with your dog.

  • WhiteNut - 2012-04-26 20:55

The problem some people have is this perception that the DA is white and all good and the ANC is black and bad...this polarises south Africa

  • thamifraser - 2012-04-26 21:55

People who continue voting for the ANC are always labeled as uneducated and stupid. If this logic is followed then what do you call the people who kept the Nationalist Party in power for 46 years?? And what do you call the ones who say they never voted for the National Party??

      George Krillen - 2012-04-27 02:47

Do u know ur history or u just like to ask such crappy questions? How did the NP stay in power? by having democratic elections? stop searchin porn on ur phone and search the south african history.

  • aiazmir - 2012-04-26 22:18

This shows that the voters for the ANC are also morally corrupt. They vote with their hearts, pledging their allegiance and support for leaders who have no conscience, who will steal from the voters who gave them power in the first place, and who are corrupt. In any society (other than Africa) this would be abhorrent. God help the citizens of Diepsloot.

  • paul.prinsloo3 - 2012-04-27 12:13
