ANC women: We're not feminists

2012-11-27 18:15

Johannesburg - ANC Women's League president Angie Motshekga has denied that the women’s league was a "feminist organisation" who was "hostile" to male leaders.

Motshekga this afternoon announced that the women's league at its meeting on Monday nominated President Jacob Zuma for a second term, and businessperson Cyril Ramaphosa as his deputy.

Both Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Zuma were initially nominated for president but after a ballot, Zuma won the presidential nomination.

Motshekga gave the assurance to journalists attending the league's briefing at Luthuli House today that the league would ensure a female president "in your lifetimes" but she stated the "material conditions" in the ANC were not right for that at the moment.

"You have to ensure that if you nominate a woman president, you take the organisation [ANC] with you," she said.

Motshekga said Zuma had done a lot for women and advanced policies in favour of women.

Asked about whether his polygamy was not against the advancement of women, Motshekga said practising his culture was a "personal choice".

She said the women Zuma married were consenting adults, and he was not harming anyone.

The league nominated ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe and chairperson Baleka Mbete for a second term, and former party spokesperson Jessie Duarte as deputy secretary general and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize as treasurer general.

About 60% of the league's nominations for the 86 members of the party’s national executive committee are women, Motshekga said.

She denied that the league supported Zuma because he didn’t fire her as education minister following the Limpopo textbook saga.

"That will be cheapening the relationship, it is much bigger than that," she said, adding that the league supported Zuma in 2007 even before she was education minister.

"She said the women Zuma married were consenting adults, and he was not harming anyone." Hmmmm just looting the coffers of the state maybe?!?

      grootrot.vanzyl - 2012-11-27 19:16

No you are not feminists, you are just stupid chauvinists hoping that a couple of you remain ministers whilst the rest of the women in SA's rural areas are reduced to landless, hungry, uneducated baby machines!

      Desilusionada - 2012-11-27 19:18

"the league would ensure a female president "in your lifetimes" but she stated the "material conditions" in the ANC were not right for that at the moment." So either they know something about Zoomers life policies or the state coffers for the material conditions are not full enough.....

      goyougoodthing - 2012-11-27 19:21

Certainly nowhere near feminist in supporter an alleged rapist.

      george.mnisi.31 - 2012-11-27 19:33

You'll do everything in your power to be negative. This is an illness which has to be treated before you go mad.

      marilyn.docherty.9 - 2012-11-28 08:08

Yes! The tax-payer is expected to fund all these wives and children. If Zuma wants to follow "Zulu Tradition' and have umteen wives, the monies must come out of his pocket - but then he has stolen from us anyway!!!!!

      lauren.hess.1272 - 2012-11-28 10:34

Peggy, you clearly don't know what a feminist is. Hint: It has nothing to do with "femininity" or a woman's/ person's size.

      BulletProof. - 2012-11-29 11:27

They are not feminists they are Polygamist.

  • sihle.kmd - 2012-11-27 18:37

Disapinted with this grannies of womens league they should be championing female leadership.anyway who are they representing many young professional woman are left out on their agenda.I only see them at funerals in their green n black uniforms never in our teens, schools.sis

      Antipoaching - 2012-11-27 19:44

totally agree, they were amongst those who condemned sex education at schools, supported Zuma and demonised his alleged victim during the rape trial, havent daid anything really against corrective rape, have done nothing to make the lot of rural women any better... The once admired ANCWL has indeed been left behind ... Totally out of touch with young aspiring SA women.. Sad really

  • JanGrimbeek - 2012-11-27 18:40

"That will be cheapening the relationship, it is much bigger than that," She must have first hand knowledge of the size !

  • - 2012-11-27 18:40

is first for women feminist? The insurance company

  • stefan.grundlingh - 2012-11-27 18:42

Poor woman should search for a textbook that defines 'feminist' as the term doen not automatically imply hostility towards men! True feminists would probably want to distance themselves from this once proud organisation that has lost its way.. Clearly the term 'president' needs to be re-defined in this country. Sad. Just sad.

  • Tiyani - 2012-11-27 18:44

No wonder why Zuma doesn't want to release the limpopo textbooks enquiry. They can keep him as the ANC president but SA doesn't deserve his nonsense.

  • JanGrimbeek - 2012-11-27 18:46

Now to explain the process of "anc democracy voting" to you all: If you don't want to vote for zoema you just raise 1 hand, if you want to vote positively for zoema then you should raise 2 hands. then the number of hands raised will be counted.

  • Prince Bird - 2012-11-27 18:53

She must go see dentist and Zooom zoom will marry her too!

  • millionwatts1 - 2012-11-27 19:01

Errr we already knew that because you don't look like females either.

  • patrick.saunders123 - 2012-11-27 19:06

No. You're too stupid to be feminists.

  • meshvic - 2012-11-27 19:09

  • Thabo Dijoe - 2012-11-27 19:16

I still ask myself if ANCWL really care/like women.

  • J.Stephen.Whiteley - 2012-11-27 19:18

    They're getting old.

  • jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-11-27 19:21

    No,,you are Zumanists.

  • george.mnisi.31 - 2012-11-27 19:42

I'm failing to understand why non ANC supporters are not making and effort to beef up their respective parties to challenge the ANC at the polls but hell bent on ridiculing and critising the party without substance. I'm starting to thing many of you cannot be taken serious. This is purely stupidity and recklessness. All I know is Zuma is the president come 2014.

  • Unknown Citizen - 2012-11-27 19:46

Zuma is really a ladies man, wouldnt be surprised if i were to be told he's dating Angie Motshekga and company. How dare they nominate such a womanizer like Jacob elaZuma for a second term?

      grootrot.vanzyl - 2012-11-27 20:04

Zuma can provide them with the required job satisfaction.

      SarelJBotha - 2012-11-27 21:02

A real lady will never want him closer than 5km from her and I know as I know many real ladies.

  • caine.abel.75 - 2012-11-27 20:18

  • Lungza7 - 2012-11-27 20:19

We must not forget the majority of the people in this site...there's not going to any Arab you bitter race..

      TumeloWaMarwane - 2012-11-27 23:04

Your comment demonstrate the mentality that makes it possible for an organisation that's supposed to lead in the suffrage movement for women in this country, publicly claiming to all and sundry, that they are not feminists. Do you even know what being a Feminist is? We're not talking Radical, or Militant Feminism here, but what it's supposed to mean, the advancement of Women without making Men feel like second class citizens, the seeking for equality for both sexes. And you think this is racist? Your little mind is filled with the fog resulting from farts the ANC and Zuma have been shutting all over the country's good name and reputation. I recommend you read Reuel Khoza article on where this country's going. You wanna call him racist too? Mxm!!

  • altus.kirsten - 2012-11-27 20:23

Passion Gap for education and Zuma!

  • makenawn - 2012-11-27 20:31

  • carl.h.witte - 2012-11-27 20:31

Not harming anyone???? He is f&%$ing the whole country!

  • SarelJBotha - 2012-11-27 20:58

..but you are supporters of a criminal party and president. Whow, happy we must all feel now....let me go puke.

  • Gert van Coller - 2012-11-27 21:01

Backing Zuma after everything that has transpired? Faaaak yea you're not feminists!

  • mbambo.shi - 2012-11-27 21:22

ANC Chief Wip [Mathoke Motsega] was given an ultimatum by Zuma, to keep his position in return of letting his wife Angie, bending down-freely for Showerhead. A win-win situation. One of the huts in the compound belongs to her.

  • charnelle.bester - 2012-11-27 21:49

All I can think of whenever I see this photo of this Angie guy, is TEXTBOOKS!!!!!! Your a epic fail, not man enough to own up for your poor lack of accountability. Your definitly not feminist, your a bunch of Q7 driving leeches.

      TumeloWaMarwane - 2012-11-27 23:07

The heart and gist of your statement is on point, but you cheapen it by referring to this poor excuse of a woman in the Masculine gender, yes, she's a failure, amybe even criminally so, but don't sink to her and her ilk's verminous level by forgetting yourself!!

  • thabo.shaku - 2012-11-27 23:12

Who needs a Men's League if you have ANC Women's League!

  • TumeloWaMarwane - 2012-11-27 23:14

Of cause the WL is not a feminist organization, they've bent over and prostituted the organization to the likes of Zuma for positions. If they were feminists, they wouldn't be as forgiving of this misogynist as they've proven themselves to be, especially when h makes statements that literally point to his belief that women are better off in the kitchen bare-foot and pregnant. He's done a lot for women? Like what? Relegating South African to mere wombs? What? Children? What has he done for South African women pray tell? I'll even give the fools who claim that he's done something, anything for Women in this country an opportunity to talk to me directly. NB: Only the rationally inclined may reply to this!

      maylani.bezuidenhout - 2012-11-29 14:40

I'm giving you a round of applause... A refreshing viewpoint indeed. How will we ever stand together as different races and tribes when we do not even have equality between men and women?

  • lionel.newton.9 - 2012-11-27 23:51 nominate Mr Zuma is perpetuating the cancer on the liver of SA politics.

  • henk.tredoux.7 - 2012-11-28 00:23

You are not feminists but you are obese and clueless!

  • Terence Hermanus - 2012-11-28 03:22

if there was a statue for education im sure she' be having carnal unconsenting relations with it... like her presi... with lady justice....

  • juannepierre - 2012-11-28 07:14

Of course they aren't feminists, they are bending to men every chance the can get. They are a joke to the entire feminist movement, may read a book on feminism and find out what should happen when a group of women get together, politically. Stupid women, you make the idea that you belong in the kitchen a believable one.

  • sandy.sutherland.58 - 2012-11-28 07:35

I think that is actually being somewhat unfair to real feminists - what have they done to be likened to this bunch of hags? LOL

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-11-28 08:02

the league would ensure a female president "in your lifetimes" but she stated the "material conditions" in the ANC were not right for that at the moment. The conditions are not right because the majority of woman in South Africa are still treated as if they are owned by their husbands, let us not avoid this truth.... and the womans league had no choice but to vote for Zuma.....because it was demanded from them.....

  • bill.mckimm.9 - 2012-11-28 08:45

The're not femanists, the're not femanine and the're not smart voting for a corrupt leader like JZ. So what are they?

  • denise.wilshire - 2012-11-28 10:59

Obviously the minister knows which side her bread is buttered. Of course she and other useless ministers would back the status quo! Why kill cow which delivers the milk?

  • carl.debeer.52 - 2012-11-28 11:50

A woman will be president in our lifetime - Go Zille you the only one that can save us now!

  • nkosazana.tengimfene - 2012-11-28 12:31

feminists are not hostile to male leaders either

      xmamkeli - 2012-11-28 13:25

Nko feminists can be hostile towards each other! Some of thew feminists abore femnists waering lipsticks because they argue that that is symbol of obeying to men and showing that they are surboninate to men. Looks is also a contentious issue to them.

  • athenkositistnhonto.gogo - 2012-11-28 14:21

The ANCWL still exists?thot it dies alongside winnie

      maylani.bezuidenhout - 2012-11-29 14:41

      sadly she still exists too...

  • mbulelo.mbulelo.90 - 2012-11-28 18:28

That's why they deployed( Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma)she was the only mama, who stand by her words, she left all smart prostitutes behind now they after KIKI

  • aidan.prinsloo - 2012-11-29 09:27

Clearly Ms Motshekga doesn't understand what feminism is! If she did, she wouldn't be making those statements. Feminism is what gave women a voice in politics (then called suffragettism), it gave women the right to contraceptives by bringing about the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s, it gave women the right to decide what happens to their bodies. Feminism is the refusal by women to be treated like doormats - and the refusal by men to treat women like doormats. If the Women's League doesn't stand for these ideals, what does it stand for?
