ANCWL backs Zuma to retain leadership

2012-11-27 16:42

Johannesburg - The ANC Women's League has nominated President Jacob Zuma to retain his position as ANC leader at the party's national conference in Mangaung.

"President Jacob Zuma has never failed us as women in terms of the things that we want to achieve," African National Congress Women's League president Angie Motshekga told reporters in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The league chose Cyril Ramaphosa to take over from deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe.

Several ANC branches, as well as the ANC Youth League, had nominated Motlanthe for president. He had not yet stated whether he would accept the nominations.

Motshekga said because the league had nominated Ramaphosa, it did not mean it was trying to malign Motlanthe.

"It is just a choice... it has nothing to do with him [Motlanthe] as a person. So it is not an anti-Motlanthe vote."

The league wanted to retain Baleka Mbete as ANC chairperson and Gwede Mantashe as secretary general.

Jessie Duarte was nominated as deputy secretary general and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize as treasurer.

Motshekga said the ANCWL supported Zuma, despite criticism by others of his traditional views.

The ANCWL president, who also served as basic education minister, denied rumours that Zuma did not fire her for the late delivery of textbooks in Limpopo because he needed to secure the league's vote in Mangaung.

This organisation makes all women look bad... and can be cited as a very good reason why women should stay out of politics altogether. Absolutely NO reasoning or logic used in this decision at all. I place my palm on my face in dismay on behalf of all intelligent women in SA.

"Motshekga said the ANCWL supported Zuma, despite criticism by others of his traditional views"! What about the fact that he is a rapist (of his own friends daughter)! A criminal and an idiot?????????? I can't believe how anyone can support that ANC because if you do then you support crime, corruption and the disgusting people who lead the party! "The ANCWL president, who also served as basic education minister, denied rumours that Zuma did not fire her for the late delivery of textbooks in Limpopo because he needed to secure the league's vote in Mangaung" yes and pigs can fly! The ANC is making the world and South Africans lose respect for our country, how can people be so blind?

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-11-27 20:25

ssmonareng, you cannot compare the charisma, elegance and distinguished charm of President Obama to that of Zuma. I mean really, even media overseas refer to his showerhead nickname!! I totally admire President Obama!

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-11-27 20:31

75sibusisumhlongo: The racist card is an old one, its been used so many times, it cannot even be regarded as an issue anymore. The majority of the population in America are white, yet they voted in a black president, for a second term. As South Africans, we really want to see change, and we dont care what colour the president is! The president of any nation is someone who commands respect, from the public it serves to the media, yet Zuma is ridiculed, because of his seedy past and actions to this day that continuously show him up as being unable to command the respect a president deserves. Time to look past the race card and focus on the issues!

  • Leonore Engelbrecht - 2012-11-27 17:02

Some kids spent 9 months of this year without basic textbooks in schools (Which btw is a violation of the Constitution),and she gets to keep her job AND sell the rest of South Africa down the toilet with her (collectively ANCWL) idiotic choice of leader?

Im not surprised the president of this league is a Minister and the husband of of this Minister is a Chief Whip they'll never go against their master. Is this league really advancing women progression? Is't promoting womens needs? Or is just a lap dog?

  • norman.buchalter - 2012-11-27 17:34

It is so obvious that JZ has bought their vote. Baleka dn Jesse are nominated to retain or get posiitons, Motshekga should be ashamed of herself and JZ himself is the paragon of virtue when it comes to tribal subjugation of women, shameful illicit relationships denigrating the sanctity of marriage and respect for women - resulting in more Presidential offspring, and flippant showerhead-like comments minimising the possible effects of unprotected sex. Well if this is how the A N C WL responds to fornication, etc, it in effect condones misogyny and invites attacks and abuse on women. One cannot believe that Ms Motshekga and company have ever stopped to consider that every time a woman is abused, a young virgin or teenage girl is raped, a baby girl is mutilated or raped, that they have tacitly condoned these abuses. I doubt very much that their outward show of support for JZ at Mangaung reflects the attitudes of all this country's women towards re-election of a morally, ethically and politically bankrupt shadow of a man.

Definition of insanity is making the same mistake over and over again and expecting a different outcome eve Is this not the trait of the typical ANC supporter.? And then they complain when we label them as such? The problem with democracy my friends is that you always run the risk that millions of idiots with voting power can send an entire country with a good reputation, good economical and fiscal structure down an abyss, and no amount of logic and reason can stop that.
