Academic: ANC able to destroy SA

2012-07-25 22:48

Johannesburg - The ANC is unable to put its "national democratic revolution" (NDR) into practice but it is capable of destroying the country, a Russian academic said on Wednesday.

"The ANC cannot implement this [NDR] policy," said Irina Filatova, a former head of African studies at Moscow State University.

"But there will be one aspect it can do, and it can destroy this country. There could be partial land reform, partial nationalisation of mines...."

But ultimately there would be control of the country by the state, and the control of the state by the party, she said.

‘ANC a bit lost’

Filatova was speaking in Johannesburg at a discussion hosted by the FW de Klerk Foundation on the recent African National Congress policy conference.

She said the ANC "obviously believes in this ideology" as it spoke of the unique nature of its developmental state.

"I think that the ANC is a bit lost about the second stage of the revolution," Filatova said.

"In the 1980s it was so obvious what would happen."

‘Socialist future promised’

Apartheid would end, and it was assumed that capitalism would also end. But then came the collapse of the Soviet Union.

She said the more the economy failed, the deeper the ANC was going to dig in its heels.

"The more failure[s] there are, the more they will try to use various means, both constitutional and unconstitutional, to keep their following," Filatova said.

"And their following has been promised a great socialist future, and they would want it."

Earlier, John Kane-Berman, executive director of the SA Institute of Race Relations, said the NDR was the "glue which holds the alliance together".

It had its origins in political theory by Vladimir Lenin, who believed the wealth of imperial powers arose only from exploitation of their colonies, not from capital risk or good management.

South Africa had not been a colony since 1910. The white settlers remained but they were seen as the equivalent of a colonial power, and blacks as the oppressed, said Kane-Berman.

"So, it follows that white wealth arises from exploitation, and is therefore illegitimate and immoral," he said.

The NDR was taken on by the party after it was introduced to it by the SA Communist Party.

‘Party overrides state’

He said the ANC had been accused of betraying the NDR, but it had reached some milestones.

"The supremacy of Luthuli House over Parliament and Cabinet has been very firmly established - the party overrides the state," he said.

More centralisation was also underway, in terms of control over provinces.

Kane-Berman said this was a long process marked by more interventionist policies, cadre deployment, weak civil servants and more party control.

De Klerk, the last apartheid head of state in South Africa, was scheduled to be the closing speaker at the event titled "National Policy at the Crossroads".

The conference is examining policies in the ruling ANC and current political developments.

...A RUSSIAN SAID THIS NOGAL!!!! 'eh wena, i cant believe!!

      boer.afrikaner - 2012-07-26 00:24

Gladstone your gonna wish apartheid was back oneday.

      mihaip007 - 2012-07-26 03:01

yes Gladstone and this academic is gaining so much from sharing the table! You idiot - this person came to discuss (like the spear says) things that are academically recognised and if this is not a warning sign, I don't know what is...

      tw2066 - 2012-07-26 06:28

Gladstone??? What do you expect, COMMUNISM FAILED IN RUSSIA. MILLIONS SUFFERED FROM COMMUNISM. THE PEOPLE DECIDED COMMUNISM MUST GO - but we are keen to bring this hardship to our people??

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-26 07:33

gladstone how dare you speak of your comrades in such a manner? 18yrs on and i think sa is a failed state, well the anc side of it anyway.

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-26 07:35

and now they wanna cut the 9 provinces down to 6 in direct result of the da having the western cape. I WILL NOT PAY A CENT IN TAX AGAIN THE DAY THEY DO THAT, burn baby burn

  • tsietsi.mshengu - 2012-07-25 23:19

Frightening and infuriating at the same time, but spot on.

      mofstok - 2012-07-25 23:27

This is why we must all stand together. Rebuilding this country can only happen when the dividing force (the ANC) has been banished from government. They care not for the people, they onky lust after control.

      Armand - 2012-07-26 08:05

Mofstok. I don't want to be to pessimistic, but the ANC will NEVER give up power without a fight. They would rather have this country in flames than to see another party in control.

      scebberish.umfazi - 2012-07-26 09:37

The solutions are realy quite simple, but so is the government.

THE EDITOR OF NEWS24 must be a staunch ANC SUPPORTER he/she is deleting my comments which are far from offensive at all, I thought freedom of speech is part of the democratic south Africa but in the world of NEWS24 there's not such a thing because I get CENSORED each time I call a spade a spade especially if it concern the ANC.

      stephanie.sutherland41 - 2012-07-26 07:04

+2 Since i am giving a foreign perspective. That policy is a big fail and gonna cost a lot of jobs and push the rand down further. Only country in the world not to have labour brokers.

      White.Tiger.Diamond.Paw - 2012-07-26 15:27

The only reason why your post has so many likes Keith, if you are a Ngobeni is because its not true besides its still on the News24 page. I posted my opinion about Winnie albeit was negative and got so many likes but today I posted about what we the masses are feeling and my post got removed. Anyway to the powers that be, its not a popularity contest, its about the truth!!

  • frack.dat.5 - 2012-07-26 01:00

  • bernard.ingram - 2012-07-26 03:01

What is wrong with the majority of blacks in SA? Socialism is a failure. Communism is a complete failure. There is not one country in Africa that is thriving under a state controlled regime. Why are you so blind to see the truth? Do you actually want SA to fail? And when you don't agree with the truth you call us (those of a colours) bastards and racists and tell us to get out of SA. I cannot believe it!

  • Gus - 2012-07-26 03:48

The thing is anc "cadres" are so acustomned now to having their enormous backsides sitting on butter that even if an opposition party wins most of the votes in an election they will never allow anyone else take over. Familiar African story.

  • piet.boerie - 2012-07-26 05:15

When the Russians were telling you what you wanted to hear thats ok, but now you hear what you dont want to and you become a racist pig. So not only are you racist but stupid too. Listen to what people say and ignore what you dont like but dont become what you hate. Your bile is as a bad as Aparthied but your stupidity is worse. The reality is that the Alliance is failing to deliver as they should and we know it but when its told to you by a "white" you become the monster that you fought against. Fools

  • Muffin_man_can - 2012-07-26 05:36

Yet again the truth is stated, but those that are steering this country into the wrong direction by voting for the anc will not wake up. Evidently something drastic needs to be done to change leadership, or we can kiss SA goodbye.

  • Nita8P - 2012-07-26 05:58

We don't even need an academic to tell us this. Only the mentally blind can't see that the anc is destroying SA

  • leaproach.thekeeper - 2012-07-26 06:05

I believe there are many black intelligentsia in SA that are sick and tired of Zuma and his cronies. Zuma will crash and burn in December…and maybe the ANC as well in 2014. Communism is the same as Apartheid; dinosaurs that are history!

      allen.bullard.9 - 2012-07-26 09:52

Eventually tax collection will start to dwindle as those of us who work for a living and pay the tax have come to realize that we are funding all those layabouts who don't work and demand that the government feed, cloth and house them - for free! Those of us who employ people will decide to close our businesses, lay off workers and then see what happens. I'm sick and tired of paying tax for it to be wasted on fast cars with blue light cavalcades and supporting a leader who thinks he's a player on the world stage. All he is is a subsidised tourist who does not have the ability to govern and make a difference to bettering the life of people the way Mandela did. Mandela's ANC and the current ANC are not the same thing! But, the masses will vote for him because they will once again be given a t-shirt and KFC.

      leaproach.thekeeper - 2012-07-26 13:14

@allen...[sigh]'re most probably correct. On the issue of masses; many have TV's nowadays; so maybe they're getting more informed by the day?!

  • victor.windsor - 2012-07-26 06:12

We the public could have told him that and we are trying to tell the rest of the world that but nobody gives a damn !!!!

  • robin.stobbs.9 - 2012-07-26 06:18

Sad to say the ANC has almost achieved this goal already!

  • Vince.York - 2012-07-26 06:26

The level of HIGH POLITICISATION that the ANC has forced onto everyone and still does all day every day has now forced the nation to a racial polarization as it goes into it's "laager defensive mode" and lashes out everywhere else but at itself for complete failure to achieve any of it's aims except anti-social theft. The ANC and alliance is a fantasy - kept alive by the various forms of media - instead of the media having the balls to say it as it is, and how this academic has. Can you imagine SA if the media did not force pictures of the elitist ANC and their never ending severe racist attitudes down your throat all and every day, but only exposed the failures for what and where they are. Can you imagine the 'positivity' the youth might start to generate!

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-07-26 06:40

What is this academic talking about..THE ANC HAS ALREADY DESTROYED SA !! Incompetent sh*ts !!

  • robin.mcdee.73 - 2012-07-26 07:24

  • charles.gregory.7906 - 2012-07-26 07:40

This is why the anc don't educate the masses they don't want them to see the obvious thruth they are steering us into the abyss

  • ndyeboreginaldmazawule - 2012-07-26 08:29

This party really can't eight it's challenges as it seems, and the whole world knows it. If only the ANC could also see this but I doubt because they just blinded by money and expensive cars.

  • kolekile.snama - 2012-07-26 08:43

Its not surprising that it is coming from FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION. A man who does not believe in the wrongs done by apartheid.

      scebberish.umfazi - 2012-07-26 09:32

and here epitomised in Kocky.Snakeman we have the reason it will only get worse in this country. Just another "Limpopo Graduate".

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-26 10:13

Kolekile. Will the ANC sponsor a Russian academic telling the truth?. I don't think so.

      steve.gibson.146612 - 2012-07-26 14:20

@kolekile, Hi pal suggest you remove the blinkers????

  • spencer.bullard - 2012-07-26 08:49

Some simple policies could and should be implemented to address some current issues: 1) flat tax of say 40% on mine profits in south africa, with stringent monitoring of production levels. THis has the benfit of leaving the mines in private hands (so run correctly) while benefiting the state. 2) Agricultural land to be purchasable at a fixed rate per hectare, not sure about the value here in SA, but in Australia farm land goes for $1600 for dry land and $6000 for wet land. 3) Revenues from windfall tax to be spent only on Schools and agricultural education.

      White.Tiger.Diamond.Paw - 2012-07-26 09:02

I could possibly consider that except the purchase price of the land might be a little too high.

      scebberish.umfazi - 2012-07-26 09:35

the revenues from windfall tax are already spent on schools and agricultural education. Private schools for the Cadre's kids, and, how to divide up exproprated farm land amongst cadres!

  • coenraad.vaneeden.5 - 2012-07-26 09:30

We \africans\\\\\\ need going forward the only way is a DA government . With the anc in control the way they control man we going places fast\ last place\lllllllll

  • sandy.langenstrass - 2012-07-26 09:43

The anc seems to have reached a cross road. If they take the mines and the land...this country is finished. The issue really lies in the fact...we have unqualified politicians making uneducated's the blind leading the in qualified policy advocates, who should be free of any form of discrimination...they should study facts and figures...and propose a solution as to the way this country can be successful economically and stand out as a showcase to the just 20 years after their independence from Russia, they have grow a vibrant economy, where everyone has a job and all are highly educated and qualified in their fields. Their Capital City is impressive with modern high rise buildings and excellent freeways. Someone needed to put plans in place to achieve this success...answer...EDUCATED..QUALIFIED..OFFICIALS..that's what is needed here...while we have the "FREEDOM FIGHTERS"...running this country...we will not be going anywhere...their time is up..they freed the country, now let's have qualified policy makers get this country booming...FOR EVERYONE SAKE.

      White.Tiger.Diamond.Paw - 2012-07-26 10:05

I concur! Jobs , ...give people something to live for so they don't destroy what they have. Unfortunately Affirmative and medium (outsourcing) and broad based BEE will have to be part of the package.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-26 10:09

We don't need a Russian academic to tell us anything. We can see what is happening in our country everyday and it isn't less than painful.

      pieriewaaier.zooms - 2012-07-26 10:28

But coming from a Russian academic adds more substance to the universally accepted point that communism and its derivatives of socialism have failed dismally. Remember that the ANC and its SACP lap dogs look at every strand of support emanating from Russia and China, the breeding grounds of an utterly failed socio-eonomic regime. So, it helps!

  • ludlowdj - 2012-07-26 10:34

"The more failure[s] there are, the more they will try to use various means, both constitutional and unconstitutional, to keep their following," Filatova said. a very diplomatic way of say "some legal and some illegal" of course the other thing is that had the ANC been honest enough to declare their communist intentions, they and the government of the day would have been hunted down like the dogs they are.

  • White.Tiger.Diamond.Paw - 2012-07-26 16:31

The editor of News24 is not interested in the truth, I stated an opinion on Winnie Madikizela yesterday, albeit was negative received a lot of likes and is still on the News24 page today, yet today I state a common opinion felt by a lot of Black intelligentsia yet that was removed? No one is being done a favour by letting people feel comforta\r\nble in their little cocoon, firstly it creates a culture of ignorance and it perpetuates the reality of Racism that landed this country here in the 1st place! Its not a popularity contest its about the truth!!

I wish more foreigners would comment on South Africa, not surprising its a Russian, they have always been know for their pragmatism.Ever hear the one about NASA claiming to have spent 14 million dollars developing a pen that would write in space..the Russians said they just use a pencil! So maybe we can take some heart that a Russian has said what she has,who knows maybe the world begins to see the terrible fate the ANC could bring about in South Africa..welcome food for thought indeed!

  • lynne.barker.7 - 2012-09-07 05:14

This is absolutely correct the ANC only thinks about the name ANC not the people of the country - they just want to keep the ANC going. People please wake up and change your vote or this country is finished
