Achmat: I'll leave ANC if Zuma re-elected

2012-11-28 11:31

Johannesburg - Activist Zackie Achmat will surrender his ANC membership if President Jacob Zuma is given a second term as leader of the ANC in Mangaung, according to a newspaper report on Wednesday.

"If Zuma is elected, I don't want to be a member of the ANC anymore," he told Beeld.

Achmat, founder of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and currently also a champion for farmworkers' rights, said Zuma was robbing the country blind.

"The party needs a leader with integrity, someone above reproach, who doesn't hesitate to take action against corruption," he said.

Achmat said there was already court evidence linking Zuma to corruption.

"Schabir Shaik went to jail for his corrupt relationship with Jacob Zuma. Now there's the exposure of this whole Nkandla business ... the president is indefensible, and the ANC is no longer the party I joined in 1990."

Achmat also criticised ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe, saying that while ANC members were afraid of him, there was basically nobody outside the ANC who had any respect for him.

"The secretary general is supposed to be the person calling party members to order. He's supposed to take action against corrupt members, but he does it seldom, if ever."

You will be the idiot if you remain ANC either way!

      fussed.anderson - 2012-11-28 11:54

Now how is this one for the books, If jz does not get in for the 2nd term, and gets charged for all his corruption, along with or without shaik. jz goes to jail and shaik a free man because jz set him free.

      andrew.hendrikse - 2012-11-28 11:55

Well done Zackie!! I would start packing if I was you as the ANC leadership is a bunch of the thieves and will keep the the ringleader in place.

      BulletProof. - 2012-11-28 12:33

Zackie if I was you I will pack and leave the ANC with immediate efect. don't you see the damage they are doing to our country and you are part of it?

      sani.ghana.3 - 2012-11-28 13:12

These anc people are very blind, this man he see the future and he will do the right thing. We must all stand up against thes government they will steal everything

      john.kirkwood.9619 - 2012-11-28 13:29

stop wasting time jump ship now, no matter who from the cANCer is elected things will stay the same and it wont take long for the new oak to start enriching himself, need a new party running sa hope all the voters can see this.

      Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-28 13:43

Agreed, this is not a sudden issue, but something that has been brewing nefariously for more than 30 years in zuma's brain and hagglings, hustles and shenannigans with all the 'dancing girls' of Africa. His boosted allegiance to use the traditional leaders support for the promise of untold wealth and power to get Mbeki out and him in is also unfolding a little faster and more in the open these days as the curtain falls on SA's democracy. Fish & Chips in the Nkandla Versailles anyone?

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-11-28 15:01

He is an idiot already for being in the ANC in the first place!

      siyahlupheka.siyahluphekaasinamali - 2012-11-28 15:06

The ANC will be doing a great job if they elect Zuma for second term, the Coloured in Western Cape have snubbed the ANC and the ANC was suprised by loosing with big margin in the Western Cape from the DA. Then watch this space the Xhosas,Coloureds,Indians,Sothos,Tswanas,Pedis,Vendas, and Tsongas are voting a different part this time around not the ANC, Zulus will only vote ANC but remember the NFP and Inkatha will split those votes as well then ANC I beg you to bring it on the second term for Zuma you will see the real test and the downfall of the ANC. The compain started the has started already to show the ANC the middle finger if Zuma is serving the second term.

      alan.jerrold - 2012-11-28 15:44

Yes, it actually will be great if Zuma remains as president. He has already proved himself an indecisive, corrupt and immoral man, and he typifies the ANC as it is. Motlanthe is obviously far more intelligent, but is a Malema supporter, and Juju will wreck the country if he is not immediately jailed for fraud, tax evasion and corruption. So yay - let's have Zuma for president. This will help destroy the incompetent corrupt ANC faster than any opposition party could do.

      marius.vanderhoff.5 - 2012-11-28 22:02

i see what you are saying if zuma remains - but will south-africa survive another term of corruption???

      jeremy.forbes.1293 - 2012-11-28 13:11

Good suggestion, let's hope he follows it and that his decision is the first of many. There must be other decent people in the ANC who hold the same views as Zackie.

  • justin.frittelli - 2012-11-28 11:43

He has probably made the single biggest contribution to the fight against HIV in this country, he has more credibility than a lot of our leaders. At least he is taking a stand, he might as well start packing his bags as unfortunately Zuma re election is a done deal.

      sticky.toffee - 2012-11-28 12:08

      I fully agree Justin.

      jeremy.forbes.1293 - 2012-11-28 13:13

I am beginning to think that it might not be a bad thing for the DA if JZ is re-elected as expected. It might well in the long term lead to the ANC breaking up.

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-11-28 13:19

I think that deep down the DA leadership is praying for Zuma to be re-elected. I do not think that the ANC can survive in it's current form with another term of Zuma. He is causing a major rift in the ANC, which they are desperately trying to paper over... The longer he is in power, the more corruption will happen, the more the good, common, decent people of this country will be driven away from the terrible party that the ANC has become. This will create a stronger opposition, and ultimate will result in a true democratic society. The DA probably fears the ANC electing someoen like Trevor Manuel more than anything - a competent leader at the ANC will reslt in the ANC ruling for decades. The only question is - will SA's economy survive another Zuma term? With the current labour unrest and the ever present threat of nationalisation, expect major mine closures and retrenchments, and very little direct foreign investment. Furthermore, the brain drain will once more pick up speed, which is a major problem, not just because of the loss of expertise, but also the loss of taxes...

      shamiel.mathews - 2012-11-28 18:30

I agree (especially with Frans). The biggest mistake the ANC will make is to re-elect Zuma. In the long run, we will have a better democracy. Currently we have a weak form of democracy. We still have a long way to go before parties and leaders are held accountable.

  • ngcosman - 2012-11-28 11:47

Leave now Achmat because Zuma is going to be re-elected.

      sphe.ndlovu.50 - 2012-11-28 13:12

      true, he should go now

      wayne.faulds - 2012-11-29 06:01

@ngcosman - wow, thats a pretty mindless comment. Here is a man who is taking a principled stand against corruption and all you can do is level insults. Please think and comment like a rational adult or keep your mouth shut. As the saying goes "Empty vessels make the most noise".

      John - 2012-11-29 07:56

  • mdawini.vodloza - 2012-11-28 11:47

      charl.malan.12 - 2012-11-28 11:59

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-11-28 13:00

mdawini, if zuma wins in mangaung, the anc will be split even further. so maybe you should try and keep a lid on your arrogance. DA is going to take over the leadership soon and Zille is going to be the 1st lady prez of the country.

      John - 2012-11-29 07:57

So Please do tell: WTF has Jacob and his party done for blacks to make S.A proud? just this year alone???????????????????

      peter.woods.142 - 2012-11-28 13:02

Thenjiwe....eish, but you are dof, change was happening in SA before the anc was unbanned. So what has the anc really done for SA? Kids are still traveling by taxi to attend schools out of their areas, why is this? I would take a calculated guess and say you have never been issued with a dompass!

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-11-28 13:02

@wesley.boschoff Education does not equate to intelligence. You need proof, thenjiwe is it

      trevor.dean.10 - 2012-11-28 13:12

You need to get your facts right, and not display your ignorance. The dompas was abolished in 1986 by the NP government, quite a long time before the ANC took over.

      Erna - 2012-11-28 14:16

thenjiwe.sindi You don't even know what a dompass is - was gone long before you were probably born. Had nothing to do with the anc either.

      gawie.gatvol - 2012-11-28 14:27

who cares if he leaves you ask? just shows how narrow minded and uneducated you realy are, you see this is one of the many things that the cancer lacks and that is insight cos not only him will leave but many other supporters as already seen in the commints here. Yes the anc has done a lot for black people in sa, under Mandela and Mbeki yes, and now the only black people being helped are there family and friend and there own back pockets of showerhead and co and the only reason that you will continue to support that dubble headed turkey is cos he lets you believe that all that mandela and mbeki has accomplished is also cos of him when in fact he destroys all that they have stood for, he is simply an 4th grader that has been given a loaded gun to play with and pray that the day is close when that big fatal accident will happen

      vasa.sana.3 - 2012-11-29 12:01

@william meadon. I voted for the ANC and my conscience is VERY CLEAR. And you sir you voted for for the NP. Your conscience? I bet you dont sleep at night!

      doug.evans.56863 - 2012-11-29 14:42

@Kagiso ... The ANC was a great organisation... Zuma is not the ANC. Its needs a strong leader with strong morals. Are you honestly going to sit there and say "its due to Zuma's hard work and self sacrifice that South africa is where it is today"? garbage !! Mandela allowed for transition Zuma has benefitted financially from that ! That is all !

  • maria.roth.589 - 2012-11-28 12:00

Mr Achmat you knew he was corrupt when he was elected in the beginning. Leave by all means but you should have left earlier. An aids denialist was replaced by a corrupt money grubber and you are still there. Empty words.

we can't wait for you to leave!

  • jacyjays.letsoalo - 2012-11-28 12:01

Maybe we don't know Zachie Achmats contribution to South Africa. We tend to support corruption blindly becos somebody is in Power, even Mobuto se seko had his own supporter, Sani Abacha had his own supporters. What I am saying is I know that u may think Achmat is nothing but somehow he is one of the many Million Reason there is a structured ART programme in our country in the Era of HIV

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-28 12:23

Zackie has actually done many positive things to better this awesome country of ours. What exactly has Zumba done, to positively effect SA and its citizens?

      paul.makhudu1 - 2012-11-28 13:22

@wesley.bischoff what has Zachie done for S.A? i hope you are not referring to ARV'S and so forth because it is the so-called zuma's corrupt government that provided not this opportunist!

      jacyjays.letsoalo - 2012-11-28 18:27

@Paul Makhudu just becos u responded on my comments let me mention u! I have worked in the HIV sector since 1998 as an activist, partner and so forth! If u can recall, Zachie once took a stand against the government in 2002 by not taking his ARV's becos Mbeki and Manto preferred the Beetroot! He nearly lost his life for the course of over 5million ppl living with HIV and Aids which I believe one of ur relatives are beneficiaries of this programme. In 2004/2005 the government finaly relented and started the ARV programme even more they couldn't even run the programme! The USAID, UKAID, UN and other outside organisation carried on with the programme meanwhile the government was having a Health Budget Rollover of over R100 million. And check the History Zachie was a member of the underground ANC structures like the UDF and Civic movement. We all know that Zuma has followers but not all of us are fooled by his charm! Another one is the Constitutional court Judge who also stopped taking ARVs to push the government to provide free anti retrovirals and do u know what happens when one stops taking ARV's? The virus replicates, he did it for u and me. It doesn't mean that becos Zuma was in the Struggle then he is immune to criticism, he may have joined becos he saw that his peers went to school and just wanted to be known as Comrade Amandla or Mshiniwami but when he is corrupt he is corrupt, no excuse! Funding his home with our money meanwhile I am at home not working. A Baffoon is a Baffoon even if u can make him a saint. Zuma isn't fit to be in office. Lastly, we can't stand for ppl who are corrupt and leave them just becos they have been in the struggle! Not all players in a winning team are stars...

In Zuma's tenure more corrupt ministers and officals have been fired and replaced than in the Mandela and Mbeki tenure, We have a sound and effective Aids programme, we have a performing economy, slightly disturbed by fired holigans and the negativity from the power lusting DA and Cope, rural develpment is becoming a reality even in Nkandla, we chair AU african culture and tradtions are now respect, i.e polgamy, chiefs and kings. What are you on about?

      pierre.ix.7 - 2012-11-28 13:01

@Ali "In Zuma's tenure more corrupt ministers and officals have been fired and replaced than in the Mandela and Mbeki tenure" Provide proof please..... And even then the reason is because there are more corrupt ministers and officials now than there was then(the proof for that is all over the news every day). "We have a sound and effective Aids programme, we have a performing economy, slightly disturbed by fired holigans" The AIDS program has been here since before Zuma became chief thief and the performing economy that you talk about is on the decline(go read the business section a bit to enlighten yourself). And those hooligans are in the most part loyal ANC members. "power lusting DA and Cope" Power lusting maybe, but still far better than the complete corruption that is the ANC. "rural develpment is becoming a reality even in Nkandla" I'm sure you meant "rural devel(o)pment is becoming a reality only on JZ's compound and at the nearest town for shopping". And all of that while the poor people in SA are still lied to and their plight for a better life is ignored. "we chair AU african culture and tradtions are now respect, i.e polgamy, chiefs and kings" We would have chaired the AU with or without Zuma being president. African cultures and traditions are being respected yes, but not the chiefs and kings. They have not done anything worth deserving respect from us "other cultures".

  • justin.schonegevel - 2012-11-28 12:06

Here is my view, you should remain in the ANC. The ANC needs more moral fibre leaders to stay in the ANC. With you not in the ANC then JZ will get his way and the ANC will always have corruption. The reason, ANC is a machine and will probably be a big party for the next 15 years, it needs those with moral fibres to stay in and fight the corrupt. That is how you'd serve SA. Leaving it gives the corrupt carte blanch

Troll Alert. Johannes is in the building!

  • goodguy.buthelezi - 2012-11-28 12:24

I share the same feeling comrade Achmat. Infact alot of people I come across feel the same. Instead of leaving the ANC, they including myself would rather not vote. DA Racist dont be happy regardless of whatever happens in ANC, you will always remain an opposition party

  • bullardx - 2012-11-28 12:25

WoW- leaving that party will be one of your best decisions in life man. dont even think 1nce or twice about it- just Leave:)

  • hendrik.oosthuizen.37 - 2012-11-28 12:25

One thing is very true the ANC is not the ANC they say they are .....

I'll tell you one thing, and I will be frank... He is definitely not an ignorant, uneducated p0€s like you...

      bruce.robertson.9 - 2012-11-28 12:43

  • matsutle.aphane - 2012-11-28 12:27

Zackie Achmat u are very right, calm down, don't be emotional, ,we came so far with this organisation''ANC'',we can't leave now not today nor tomorrow, time will come for zuma an malema to face the law about the dirty works they have done to OUR BELOVED COUNTRY SA, the TRUTH NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH, will prevail oneday,

      Sithembele Kholiwe - 2012-11-28 12:43

it will b too late by den,anc will b history

      Erna - 2012-11-28 14:24

Bringing these people in the anc to book is taking too long. By the time truth does prevail, it will be too late. Look at all the dirty tricks zuma is accused of, and yet there are still millions who support him. Why?

  • nonofo.marokemosimege - 2012-11-28 12:28

Comrade can you pls leave now, when join Anc you didnt iform the media so go.Anc is like a sea when you take out one cup of water from it does not even fill.hamba, tsamaya zuma is already back also kgalema

  • eddiebant - 2012-11-28 12:30

Sure the anc will welcome that. They're not married to you.

  • BulletProof. - 2012-11-28 12:30

Zackie if I was you I would pack and leave the ANC any way, don't you see what they are doing to our country?

      dee.bone.39 - 2012-11-28 19:26

they couldn't care jack sh*t about the country. How can anyone be loyal to ANY political party. Thats farkin backward thinkin

  • Tiyani - 2012-11-28 12:31

Whatever the outcome of Mangaung is a disaster for ANC. If Zuma wins its another COPE story and Motlanthe's win, Zuma suppoters will go back to IFP or NFP

  • bullardx - 2012-11-28 12:33

If one member is ready to leave, willingly, and others remain quiet or get dismissed forcefully (lokl.e.g. Malema) what does that say about this party????....
