Bloemfontein - An agreement was reached on Thursday in a legal tussle between opposing political parties and government entities in the Northern Cape’s Nama Khoi municipality.

Municipal speaker Joshua Losper said the agreement stated that suspended ANC councillors would be allowed to participate in council meetings.

The arrangement was made a court order, but the status quo at the municipality would be maintained.

Losper said no council meeting could, therefore, take place until an appeal related to a court interdict had been finalised.

Losper, Nama Khoi’s mayor, its municipal manager, and councillors of a DA and Cope coalition filed an application against eight ANC councillors and Northern Cape co-operative governance MEC Alvin Botes.

The issue related to the suspension of the opposition ANC councillors for not attending council meetings.

Their absence resulted in meetings without a quorum, which led to the municipality’s services grinding to a halt.

The municipal management and coalition councillors allegedly made several unsuccessful efforts, include urging the MEC to intervene, to get the ANC members to work.

In the meantime, the ANC won a by-election in Nama Khoi in May, which gave it back a majority of one seat in the council.

Botes and the ANC announced on Monday they were ready to take charge of the municipality during a special council meeting on Thursday.

Losper gave the assurance that municipal services would be delivered to the Nama-Khoi community while the legal matter was resolved.
