Anger at Palestinian label decision

2012-05-21 16:07

Johannesburg - A government move to re-label Palestinian products has raised the ire of the Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) and SA Zionist Federation.

"This decision was taken... based on communications with lobby groups that have a pronounced anti-Israel political agenda," SAJBD spokesperson Charisse Zeifert said in a statement on Monday.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies has announced steps that could see products manufactured in the occupied Palestinian territories, and sold in South Africa, labelled to indicate their place of origin.

The SA Zionist Federation said Davies relied on the views of groups whose aims were to enforce a regime of boycotts and sanctions against Israel.

"At the same time the minister has refused to meet and consult with interest groups opposed to his position on this matter," it said in a statement.

Technically complicated

The board said Davies had repeatedly declined to meet with its members.

"The question of products originating from disputed territories is a technically complicated one," said Zeifert.

"In addressing it, the SAJBD urges the South African government not to prejudge the issue."

It regretted that the minister had gazetted the decision before broad consultation. The SAJBD said South Africa should not adopt a discriminatory policy which was inconsistent with how it dealt with similar products imported from other parts of the world.

"The SAJBD, like the SA government and the ANC, supports a negotiated settlement that will see a two state solution with Israelis and Palestinians living side-by-side."

Zeifert said the minister's actions were not helpful in achieving this goal.

The Zionist federation added: "The interests of all parties to the Israel Palestine conflict are best served by a process of dialogue and discussion... and not a process that seeks to blame and isolate one party."

Cosatu supported the department's decision.

Accurate information

"The Congress of SA Trade Unions warmly welcomes and fully supports the decision of the department of trade and industry that certain goods originating from Israel must be re-labelled," spokesperson Patrick Craven said in a statement.

"The federation reaffirms its support for the Palestinian solidarity campaign for boycotts, sanctions, and divestments of Israel."

Davies on Monday defended a call for public comment on whether products manufactured in Israeli-occupied territories should reflect that fact on their labels.

He told reporters in Cape Town that South African consumers had the right to make buying decisions based on accurate labelling.

Davies said South Africa was "not so unique" in requiring that its consumers had accurate information on where products came from.

The British department of food, environment, and rural affairs had indicated that products which stated "West Bank" should make a distinction between Palestinian products and products which were from Israeli enterprises operating in those territories.

It was already an offence in the United Kingdom to label such products as products of Israel.

The European Union also required a distinction.

I agree, sellable goods should be labeled with the place of manufacture, else you are selling under false pretenses!!

      Squeegee - 2012-05-21 16:31

I must thank our government for providing daily comedy material. They constantly expand the boundaries of stupidity.

      George - 2012-05-21 16:49

Plz relabel the damm good. At least that way we have a choice. I don't see anything wrong with knowing exactly where is you money going. Label them today

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-05-21 17:11

Agreed. What's good for the Jew is good for the gentile

      James - 2012-05-21 17:31

Every product's origen sold in the US is labeled.

      Mfundi - 2012-05-21 17:32

@Squeegee - What is sooo funny about this?

"Two state solution with Israelis and Palestinians living side-by-side" !?!?! If Rob Davies belives that can wear "Nike's" made in Vietnam, I wish him a good luck to find "Made in Palestine" kosher food. Country of origin....hmmm. Where are the taxes paid Mr.Daves? In which country? Don't you think that your advisers left you "a bit" unprepared in this situation? Mr.Davis....any comments about labeling of the products manifactured in Nepal, or this is not appropriate time to discuss your Asian partners? Damn Banana Republic

      Larry - 2012-05-21 18:18

@James, I have never heard such crap in my whole life and I have heard a lot of crap from Israel-haters. Compare religious freedom in Israel with that in any Islamic state and you will choke on your own stupidity. Damn fool.

      John - 2012-05-21 20:08

@James I have a real South African business case for you James. A South African Based Company in Western Cape manufactures brake pads for BMW. They get exported to Germany and the same product gets stamp “Made in Germany” and returns back in our local market…. Question: Do you think that if Abdul makes T-Shirts and Moshe stamp them as “Nike” they need to be labeled “Made in India”, because the cotton is from there? I think that many Israeli companies can show you that end product manufacturing process and QA was completed outside of Palestinian territories and “labeling request” is nothing else, but another bad diplomacy case from South African side.

      Larry - 2012-05-21 21:35

Lesego, you have a monthly bus ticket and a free iPad with your FNB saving account.

      Larry - 2012-05-21 21:39

Work on this one Lesego. If you come across two jars of pickles in the shop, one labelled 'Made in Israel' and one labelled 'made in West Bank', which one will you buy?

      James - 2012-05-28 23:32

Eh Larry,Palestinians are not allowed to fly. Walls split their communities, 700,000 lost their homes. In Monsey NY the Orthodox give boys Herpes when they lick the blood after Circ. Holy Marxist Talmud {Google it} Soferim 15 "Even the best of non Jews should be killed". You sing "Kill the Persian" at Purim. Old Abe screwed Ishmael out of his birthright, kicked him and Hagar out into the desert. A death sentence in those days. Then we have Joshua "Kill them all men women and children" Not a pretty picture.

      James - 2012-05-28 23:35

Problem is your foul religion cannot stand the glare of truth. The weakness in your argument is reflected in you resorting to personal attacks.

  • Koos - 2012-05-21 16:15

I don't mind. Then I know what to buy and what not but mark the labels “Terrorist made” or “Israeli made”. Will save on ink and label paper.

      jowza1 - 2012-05-21 16:27

Koos,do you know what a terrorist is?

      sticky.toffee - 2012-05-21 16:27

No difference between terrorist made and Israeli made.

      djmain1 - 2012-05-21 16:29

      Isn't that the same thing?

      Frank - 2012-05-21 16:31

This is simple....terrorists supporting terrorists and Israel should kick these fools to the gutter where they belong!

jowza1 - 2012-05-21 16:34 seem to know alot about gutters

      Frank - 2012-05-21 17:02

jowza1 - May 21, 2012 at 16:46 On the contrary, I have more than enough to say about the so-called plight of the Palestinians. I just realize that saying it to you is a total waste of time.

      Harald - 2012-05-21 17:13

Koos the terrorist in this case is the occpier n.l. Israel.

      Harald - 2012-05-21 17:16

      Frank - 2012-05-21 17:22

Harald - May 21, 2012 at 17:16 And it's even better to come up with something original and fresh rather than running this (by now) lame quote further into the muck. Much like your lame stance on the Palestinians?

      igshaanc - 2012-05-21 18:08

oh koos listen to yourself your are just plain stupid

      Koos - 2012-05-21 19:30

Israel! You still have friends here....

      Larry - 2012-05-21 22:23

Lesego, if you have not yet learned that quality counts for much more than quantity, then you need a few Jewish friends to teach you this most basic principle. Israel only needs one friend, which happens to be the USofA, even though it can count on very many more quality friends. If the rest of the world scum, including SA, were to be unfriendly, then this would not matter one iota to Israel.

      James - 2012-05-28 23:45

Eh Larry, "Friend USA" is waking up. In Iraq we killed 100,000 innocent people under false pretenses, we spent $1TRILL. Warmongers were Perle, Krauthammer, Wolfowitz, Lieberman, Rumsfeld. No they are not from Sweden.

  • Riad - 2012-05-21 16:19

So what’s so wrong in letting the consume decide if he wishes to purchase a product manufactured by an Israeli enterprise or not……if this is a standard practise in other regions of the world, why should it not be applicable to us in South Africa……am I missing something?

      Martin - 2012-05-21 16:41

Yes Riad, The Zionists detest any reference to the concept that they have stolen land and are busy with a aggressive take over of the area's demarcated for the Palestinians in 1948. This includes their ridiculous wall that is designed to screw completely with Palestinian cities, making it very hard for them to do business. I thoroughly agree with the labelling decision, because I don't buy goods 'Made in Israel', but would buy ones 'Made in Palestine'!

      George - 2012-05-21 16:49

      Label them today plz

      Martin - 2012-05-21 17:12

And just to make sure, I am not anti-sematic, I am anti Zionist aka the country that has broken more UN resolutions than anyone else. Just download and watch a documentary called Obstacle or 'The Iron Wall', hell, the people that disliked my comment will quickly change their tune :)

      Larry - 2012-05-21 18:36

Martin. The goods that will be marked 'made in Palestine' will be those goods produced by Jews in West Bank Jewish settlements. Be sure to support them. You may have convinced yourself that you are not anti-semitic, but I am not convinced. Do you have similar strong opposition to Syria, for example, who have slaughtered more of its own civilians in the past six months than the number of Palestinians killed in conflict with Israel over the last decade? Nope? But I suppose a pet-hate needs to be fed.

      Larry - 2012-05-21 21:40

Work on this one Lesego. If you come across two jars of pickles in the shop, one labelled 'Made in Israel' and one labelled 'made in West Bank', which one will you buy?

      Martin - 2012-05-21 23:04

Larry dude, please just watch the movie I talked about (called Obstacle or 'The Iron Wall' and then come tell me what Israel is doing to the Palestinians is just. Why should I support an unjust cause? So, I'd rather the labels in question were implemented, so I can make my own decisions? Albeit a placebo for the crimes that are committed every day by the occupying force. Heads up to Tutu for being such a talisman for the struggle.

      Larry - 2012-05-22 06:44

Martin, you have been duped by propaganda. Think man, it is one sided completely. Have you considered the reason WHY Israel is so beligerent, and why Israel 'occupies' the West Bank and how it came about. There is a good reason for the wall. Would you care to hazard a guess for that reason. ...and it is not to stael land.

  • Henry - 2012-05-21 16:20

I too wish to know what was manufactured by palestinians for the benefit of palestinians so can look for an alternative product instead. Would hate to buy something which i think would benefit Israelies actually feathering arab pockets.

      ashne.segal - 2012-05-21 16:31

Henry, listen to me carefully pal - may you never need a stent in your heart, because that comes from Israel as well as a pacemaker and also please chuck your computer, because the chip is made in Israel as well, nevermind the cellphone you use everyday - the technology was all invented in Israel! So put that in your pipe and smoke it!

      Henry - 2012-05-21 16:45

Try read my post again irritirritated. I would rather spend more money buying an alternative then buy palestinian. Not one cent of my hard earned money must ever reach the hands of islamofascists.

      Fidel - 2012-05-21 16:53

I just love it when emotional wrecks switch on their fingers before their brains. You two deserve each other!

      Nibiru - 2012-05-21 17:08

@ Fidel you have just summed yourself up nicely

      Larry - 2012-05-21 18:39

palestinians don't produce a single thing. They cannot feed themselves even, let alone export products to SA. Makes no difference - if it says Israel or Palestine on the label, it comes from Israel. SA Muslims wont buy these goods, and the ANC is buying their vote with this red herring.

      Larry - 2012-05-21 21:43

Precisely what I have been saying all along Lesego. It is a red herring. It means nothing. Imagine the confusion in the minds of the consumer. For example: Work on this one Lesego. If you come across two jars of pickles in the shop, one labelled 'Made in Israel' and one labelled 'made in West Bank', which one will you buy?

      Larry - 2012-05-22 20:32

So you would then buy the one labelled 'Made in West Bank' and your money would go to the Jewish 'settler' who had the business ability to produce and export his products.

  • Bokfan - 2012-05-21 16:22

Erm I dont get it. Is this another freedom of speech issue?

      Boaz - 2012-05-21 18:06

Nope its another disastrous decision by the ANC... Allot like BEE, E-Toll and the arms deal. They want to name Israeli good as Palestinian goods - but the Palestinians have made nothing. I think they should name goods from China rather as Tibet – but I guess Tibet can not afford to pay the ANC as much the Arabs could. Its business as usual in Pretoria.

  • Burtfred - 2012-05-21 16:22

Do Palestinians actually make anything other than bombs?

      does iy now,steve

      Ted - 2012-05-21 16:54

Any man locked up in a cage will devise a plan to set himself free. Palestinian livelihoods, if you call that life, are just as good as livestock for Israel. You kill all you want because they are yours. Noone should recognise them because to you they are not people. A free man should never comment about how good it is to stay under siege or in bondage. After the holocaust, you would believe Jews would set a good example but alas, they have assumed untouchable levels. Its OK to say Blacks, Arabs, Chinamen etc but if you say jew; off to jail you go as an anti-semite. Bibi only yesterday was rallying the Jewish nation to 'keep our Jewishness' and wants blacks to leave Israel. This is one country that has lost the plot to pursue honesty, non-racism and justice for all. What about the state of life of Israeli Arabs? If its made in Palestine, its made there. The major problem here is that in the warped apartheid ideology of some Jews, the mentioning of Palestine on a label is a stamp of approval that it exists. To them, Palestinians are livestock for use as shooting targets and all manner of war games. They are the only people on earth without a country on earth. Imagine a 50 year old father who has no country. Free yourself from bigotry and hatred. Free Israel from hatred. Free Palestine from Israel!

      Burtfred - 2012-05-21 18:28

Seriously - what products does Palestine manufacture and export? What would have the "made in Palestine" label Any bright ideas?

The full catalogue of the so-called Palestinians are suicide vests and home made rockets. Bunch of morons!

      James - 2012-05-28 23:51

      Frank - 2012-05-21 16:37

Well, we know enough to clearly see that if the Palestinians came to the negotiating table for the last 50 years with peace on their minds , we wouldn't be having this conversation. Instead, they are hell-bent to destroy Israel and when knocked back due to their stupidity, the bleating can be heard from the moon.

      Frank - 2012-05-21 16:44

We know enough to clearly see that if the Palestinians came to the negotiating table looking for peace, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Instead they are hell-bent on destroying Israel and when they get a bloody nose, the wailing can be heard from the moon.

      Henry - 2012-05-21 16:48

      Frank - 2012-05-21 17:07

My apologies for posting twice as my first one disappeared and I surmised that some pro-Palestinian decided to report the post. I merely re-wrote it trying to be less belligerent and reposted. My first one magically reappeared but as you can see, the message stays the same.

Seems it's not only in North Korea that there are brainwashed people happy to advertise their own ignorance by parroting the standard party line. The products that would be targeted by this labelling are products produced in the Occupied Territories by Israeli businesses using stolen Palestinian resources like their water and land. The level of stupidity in this country from a certain group of the population is shocking, weren't it for the fact that racism pumps adrenalin into the veins of its victims with an unusual aplomb.

So what are the SA consumer supposed to make of it Fidel. Buy the West Bank label if pro-Palestinian or not. Obviously, if both labels are produced by Israeli's, whether so-called Jewish settlers or Jewish Israeli's. And how are the ANC goint to communicate this. Posters, school cariculum, TV adverts? The whole issue is too stupid for words.

      Larry - 2012-05-21 21:47

  • Tuco - 2012-05-21 16:27

We have a right to know where a product comes from. If its from China then let it be labeled as such. Same applies if its from Palestine or Israel. We have a right to know.

      danny.levin.351 - 2012-05-21 16:43

Sure Tuco, as soon as they start to import suicide vests and KASSAM rockets they must make sure they are labelled correctly. we would not want you to buy a shep imitation suicide vest made in China...

      Boaz - 2012-05-21 18:17

Yes Tuco - but the ANC wants goods that are made in Israel's capital city to be known as Palestinian goods. If it was just Palestinian goods from the west bank and/or Gaza no one would care.

      sharon.cambier - 2012-05-21 18:19

Difference is that Palestinians produce.....rockets. Then maybe SA should start labeling the denims that come from China as Child labor used, made in China.

Here we go again with the hatered fuelled by haters of Jews and the ONLY DEMOCRACY in the middle east. for starters, the only products made in Gaza and the WEst Bank are illegall to import to SA (they only make boms, rockets and suicide-bomber vests). Israel is SO tolerant of their sworn enemies that despite being continuously attacked by them (rockets fired deliberately at civilian population, including an anti-tank rocket fired at a school-bus) Israel provides electricity, mdeical tratement (many palestinians come to be treated in Israeli hospitals) and food supplies. Please can someone show me ONE nation in the world that would help an enemy like this? the SA Govt has so far done NOTHING to condemn the killing of citizens in Syria and is openly aligned with all manner of TRULY oppresive and murderous regimes like Iran, Zim and North Korea.

      Dylan.rid - 2012-05-21 16:47

Finally someone with some sense, thank you for pointing out the truth to the uneducated masses.

      James - 2012-05-21 17:21

Israel is NOT a Democracy The Rabbis wield far too much power. The Rockets Have not killed one Jew. We fire those on the 4th of July. On the other hand thousands Palestinians have been killed in the past few years. The Constant debate in Isr. press is "Which Arab country to attack next".

      Fidel - 2012-05-21 17:21

Claims of anti-Semitism are a quick and easy way to try to sway the political debate by any political criticism of Israel as criticism of Jews. An anti-semite is no longer someone who hates Jews, but anyone the talmudic Jews hate.

  • Fidel - 2012-05-21 16:47

Those opposing this principle are ignorant, stupid or both, including the SAJBD. It is staandard practice for all countries to require that products made in a particular country be labelled correctly. Occupied Palestinian territory is not Israel, and any responsible government has a duty to ensure that its citizens are properly informed about the origins of products they consume, or if they wish to boycott certain products, for whatever political reasons. On News24, commentors seem to enjoy debating from a position of misguided knobheadness!

      Mewik - 2012-05-21 17:09

Wtf map are you looking at? It's internationally recognised as Israel, so the labels are correct and will remain as they are. So you will buy Israeli products but not Products made in the Israeli occupied region of Palestine? Um I'm no genius but how about you just avoid any product that says made in Israel? Duh

      Fidel - 2012-05-21 17:38

Your are a liar, all intl bodies recognise and regard parts of occupied Palestine as the "Occupied Territories. Even Israeli politicians regard them as such except the right-wing settlet lunatics who are running wild in these settlements. "Who are you going to believe?" the comedian Groucho Marx asked. " Me, or your lying eyes?"

      Mewik - 2012-05-21 18:29

So does your map have Israel then some little bits that say occupied territories? No it just says Israel doesn't it? Do you stare at it each night and then throw your toys about calling the map a liar and try gouge your eyes out for seeing such lies? Why is this SA's problem? Well it simply isn't, do you for one second think Israel gives half a toss what this corrupt little pit at the bottom of Africa thinks about the labels on their products? Again don't buy stuff from Israel if it offends you, its that simple.

      Fidel - 2012-05-21 18:39

Judging by the response by the Israeli government and its supporters on this thread, it appears that this beautiful little country, which punches above its weight in intl relations, does matter. On another thread a KZN university has just cancelled a lecture by a visiting Israeli ambassoder out of protest from representatives of the DBS movement. The cultural boycott of Israel is taking shape indeed!

      Larry - 2012-05-21 20:09

Fidel, lets get down to the crux. If you see two jars of pickles on the supermarket shelf, one labelled 'made in Israel' and one labelled 'made in West Bank' - which one will you buy?

  • Charles-Bronson - 2012-05-21 16:49

Goverment please label your cars with stickers "WE ARE THIEFS"

  • - 2012-05-21 16:49

Oh yawn ... as if there is no other conflict in the world to get really serious about - what a waste of time and effort on something so damn stupid!

  • Andre - 2012-05-21 16:54

GOD (JHWH) said: "I will bless those that bless you (Israel) and will punish those who punish Israel". Do not test God. You do that at your own peril! For it is written!

      Fidel - 2012-05-21 17:11

      Myths may serve mystries only!

      Bernard - 2012-05-21 17:23

shut up with your old testament biblical rubbish that only brings unrest.

      BJ - 2012-05-21 20:24

Did God really say that? Or do we only have the word of his self-appointed scribes for it? Anyway, it is typical of homicidal maniacs to claim they rape and murder in the name of whatever deity they believe in. Ahmadinejad, Netanyahu, Kony... all human rights abusers in the name of religion

  • Barefoot - 2012-05-21 16:56

When the government announces it it's wrong, once it get out that other parts of the world are also doing it then it's somewhat right? i don't get the logic of most- the government is corrupt but that doesn't mean everything that's done is

  • Sonja - 2012-05-21 16:56

cANCer Must Go Jump in the Lake! ... Please. Get a life. as**hoolllee***s

  • Phillip - 2012-05-21 16:57

The ANC could care less about the question of supposed Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories - like the fortuitous Leandra Dos Santos talcum-powder bomb and the manufactured furore surrounding the 'Spear' weapon of mass destruction, this new petty non-entity is just Rob Davies being a good little cadre in doing his bit to deflect the spotlight from his political party's total failure as a government, in the face of some very heavy 'smacks' they have taken in the courts of late and having humbly bent the knee to their 'loyal' alliance partners, and the resulting ever present danger of their electorate finally realising what (or perhaps WHO) they actually stand for. Oh, how they must be praying for another 'Reitz 4' right now! In the meanwhile, I'll wait to see what 'phallacy' comes up next (sorry!) as this nonentity fizzles out, whilst munching my individually engraved 'grown in the ANC sponsored Peoples Democracy of Zimbabwe' peas...

      Fidel - 2012-05-21 17:15

The ANC cares a lot about the plight of Palestinians. Ever heard the term, "who knows it feels it"?

      Larry - 2012-05-21 20:12

Seem to care more for the Palestinians than their own poor and unemployed.

  • Sidney Gilroy - 2012-05-21 17:02

Look. If the price is right...I don't much care if it came from the Moon. Lets be realistic - Most of you wear sneakers stitched up by a 7-year old in India and posted your comment from a laptop or smartphone made by a slave in China. Get with the program people.

      Fidel - 2012-05-21 17:12

Never had to take a stance on anything other than your own salary appraisal?

      Sidney Gilroy - 2012-05-21 17:37

Heaven is where we aspire to go to. Earth is a much, much different place. Preaching Utopia will only land you in Positive Thinking seminars wearing hemp clothing sipping organic smoothies. Blissfully under the impression you're making a difference. Wake up.

      Fidel - 2012-05-21 19:20

Do you have any more gems of logic like that. I just can't compete.

  • clivelang1 - 2012-05-21 17:04

Really.....aren't there more pressing issues in our own country, that need to be sorted before we start doing this crap? Really? hau!!!

      Ted - 2012-05-21 17:11

A government doesn't function like your home. Whenever there is an issue, people always want to say we have pressing issues blah, blah blah. Why do we have all these ministries? You want everyone to work on housing or education or any of those issues? Why is there a ministry of trade and industry?

  • Lynda - 2012-05-21 17:07

At last some forward thinking by the government.....well done

  • Barefoot - 2012-05-21 17:10

Why are other issues being neglected? well government have different departments, if Trade and Industry is doing it's job don't blast it because the others are not- if you always cry foul then that would be expected of you so even when you make valid points it seems like you are just being your normal self

  • Jerzy - 2012-05-21 17:11

Foreign policy is determined by the ANC, and not by a bunch of apartheid era apologist. Since Israel was a staunch supporter of aparthied, your blind compassion for all things Israeli certainly makes sense. I also find it stange how Palestinians are labelled as terrorist on this board, when exactly the same was done to us. Time to hang up the short pant, because theres a new sheriff in town, and he doesnt care what you have to say.

      Henry - 2012-05-21 17:21

Don't fret jerzy, the anc are still terrorists. Voted in by imbeciles/terrorists.

      Larry - 2012-05-21 21:52

Work on this one Lesego. If you come across two jars of pickles in the shop, one labelled 'Made in Israel' and one labelled 'made in West Bank', which one will you buy?

  • Bernard - 2012-05-21 17:26

Good move ANC, NEXT is tibet and South Sudan. For once they are doing something good.
