Answer about Sisulu's jet use withdrawn

2012-11-15 16:30

Cape Town - A written reply to Parliament regarding Public Service Minister Lindiwe Sisulu's use of luxury jets has been withdrawn, her office said on Thursday.

"Minister Bathabile Dlamini, the Acting Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, has written to Parliament to withdraw the reply and conveyed an apology to Minister Sisulu for the inconvenience caused in respect of the reply," Sisulu's spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya said in a statement.

He said the response was "factually incorrect and misleading".

Current Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula had acknowledged in a reply to a parliamentary question that Sisulu, her predecessor, travelled in a luxury Gulfstream jet more than 200 times between Pretoria and Cape Town, at the cost of R200 000 a trip.

Mabaya said Sisulu maintained she only used the jet 35 times.

'Flea-infested body' remark

Sisulu said: "I am relieved that this matter has been resolved... During my tenure the department of defence received its first unqualified audit report in the history of the SA National Defence Force.

"We left the SANDF in a better state of health than it has ever been before. I am very proud of our achievements."

Sisulu called on MPs, in particular the Democratic Alliance's David Maynier, to stop "spreading lies".

On Tuesday, responding to questioning from Maynier on the matter in the National Assembly, Sisulu told him to "keep your flea-infested body at peace and sit down".

National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu responded to complaints about Sisulu’s remarks by saying he would study the transcript of the debate and make a ruling later.

The SANDF has only been around for 18 years. And if the rumours are true there is a lot of missing equipment, from Rifles to helicopters. The state of our SANDF is dismal at best.

      smalefane - 2012-11-15 15:53

Rumours??? C'mon, you are way too smart for that!!!

      nikondaniel - 2012-11-15 15:54

Well said, and still this Coconut-Bitch will deny any wrongdoing! BURN HER!!!

I think the official who prepared the initial answer is also suffering from serious flee investation.

For "misuse" (personal) of military aircraft a U.S. General has been demoted from 4 star to 3 star. Use of an executive jet ONLY 35 (200?) times @ R 200 000 time by Beehive Sisulu and you get promoted.

      Desilusionada - 2012-11-15 16:20

That's R 7 000 000.00 in 3 years at 35 times! Nearly one trip every month. To go where? And to do what is probably the question....

  • camp.j - 2012-11-15 15:23

And Blade has called for insults to be banned? Perhaps it would be a good idea, 90% of the ANC would be silenced

      nikondaniel - 2012-11-15 15:55

Screw Zuma Screw Blade Screw Sisulu Screw ANC

      braamc - 2012-11-15 18:00

  • joe.farmer.92775 - 2012-11-15 15:27

caught in a lie and now withdrawn

      godfrey.welman - 2012-11-15 15:38

No, the truth was to damaging to the ANC.

      godfrey.welman - 2012-11-15 15:45

@Joe, if that is true, should the ANC not disciplin the cadre for slandering another cadre in Parly.

  • Gary.desousa7 - 2012-11-15 15:27

If it turns out to have been 35 trips and done above board then all is fine, she cannot be blamed for anything wrong, but wrong information was fed to the public.

      joe.irwin.50 - 2012-11-15 17:19

Thicker than thieves Jackie. No pardon required.

      ziso.maziso - 2012-11-16 09:41

Correct Gary. Bottom line, the facts leading to the accusations were wrong, plain and simple. Now that the correct figure is there, the decent thing is to simply accept the truth like it is.

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-11-15 15:46

Even at 35 trips = R7 Million. Is there something wrong with business class? She is a public servant, not a Rock Star.

      LeahKnott28 - 2012-11-15 15:51

  • LeahKnott28 - 2012-11-15 15:47

He didn't spread lies, he asked a question, it appears that both the new and prior Minister of Defence are the ones spreading lies. And sorry but where is her apology for the offensive remarks towards David Maynier? I don't care if she only used the jet once, at R200,000 a pop that's a gross misuse of public funds and I want to know why she couldn't take an ordinary plane, what was so urgent 35 times to justify the use of a jet between CT and PTA??? Did she need to get her nails done in between, good grief? Don't worry Lindiwe, I am sure the unemployed and hungry people whose mouths you take this money out of appreciate what you're doing for them and I am sure they appreciate how your R7 million worth of wasteful expenditure helps them take care of their families. I cannot fathom how you actually sleep at night!

  • briana.scott - 2012-11-15 15:48

    what a joke

  • michael.i.wright - 2012-11-15 15:52

"We left the SANDF in a better state of health than it has ever been before. I am very proud of our achievements." Yep, we are in the twilight zone.

      terence.pattison - 2012-11-15 16:08

Not the Twilight zone, PITCH DARKNESS!! A Defence Force that is the laughing stock of the World - no qualified pilots for their new toys, ships that can`t go to see because the weather might be bad and an Army that couldn`t fight its way out of a wet paper bag!!

      ianingwe - 2012-11-15 16:50

Not to mention a brand new submarine that was damaged when it was plugged into the wrong "plug" when it first arrived in Simonstown. It is still not sea worthy!

  • sarecen.smith - 2012-11-15 15:54

wonder how she sits so still with all her crabs nibbling on her?

  • allan.keyzer - 2012-11-15 15:57

Who needs the secrecy bill when the untouchables can squash anything?

  • norman.buchalter - 2012-11-15 16:04

35 trips @R200,000 per trip. One doesn't need rocket science to see it is still just a tired old theme of taxpayer abuse to the tume of R7mill. Perhaps one can call it inability to do basic arithmetic cos of jet lag? Go figure, ex Minister. I agree that this is still enough abuse. David please do take this fleabag issue further.

  • dekkeranton - 2012-11-15 16:05

So, if she by her own admittance, only used the jet 35 times. She has in fact admitted to abusing at least R 7 000 000 of taxpayers’ money. What is wrong with using scheduled airlines, your royal highness princess Sisulu?

  • fernando.duda - 2012-11-15 16:20

It is shocking! How 35 and 200 relate to each other? Terrible mistake released by the department from onset. I think before information is released it should be processed and all errors, if any, can be rectified in time. What is South African Air Force stand on this matter? There should be records for flights... It is not for me to judge but I hope all those who squander public funds will learn that they will only cheat while they are alive beyond the grave there is no more apology, no more luxuries on the expense of others.

  • sagren.narain - 2012-11-15 16:25

huh .... wtf .....wait .... did we all just get fu#$%^2ed. I normally get kissed first.

  • ianingwe - 2012-11-15 16:35

@ michael.horton.566790 The comment on flea infestation was made in Parliament and could not result in any form of litigation due to all speech in the chamber being protected! Only the speaker (her older brother in this case) has any power of sanction!

  • sthembiso.jali.50 - 2012-11-15 16:44

  • DuToitCoetzee - 2012-11-15 17:33

No Dlamini, Maynier is not spreading lies. According to your own department, issuing statements and than withdraw it, you/your department is spreading lies and according to Sisulu, Maynier is spreading fleas. Just to clear it on what was said. lol.

  • willem.dehaan.94 - 2012-11-15 17:37

So, nothing the ANC says or does can be believed! One would expect an answer by a minister given in parliament to be the truth, based on facts from reliable sources and properly documented. Now it appears that ministers in parliament cannot be trusted to tell the truth. Well, well, and they appear to believe that they have the ability to govern? The circus gets more and more ludicrous! And, as is to be expected of people who do not know the answer - they shout and become abusive!

  • Prince.Paul.Hwingwiri - 2012-11-15 17:42

National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu responded to complaints about Sisulu’s remarks by saying he would study the transcript of the debate and make a ruling later......this guy wants to make a ruling on her own sister. What nonsense!

  • George Galsworthy Ricketts Snr - 2012-11-15 17:44

Expose her, why the covering up?

  • ari.potah - 2012-11-15 17:48

  • Thabo Dijoe - 2012-11-15 17:52

Why us this acting Minister doing, seems like a cover-up for a friend? why not let what has already been exposed to be tested? Watch out Bathabile-Dlamini, you playing with fire. Where is the Defence Minister to start with? Damn...

  • Happy Eric Sekgobela - 2012-11-15 17:58

  • siyabonga.phungula1 - 2012-11-15 19:00

sisulu was wrong to use that language with maynier but if she is guilty how did she receive an unqualified audit?

  • ray.syst - 2012-11-15 20:58

"We left the SANDF in a better state of health than it has ever been before. I am very proud of our achievements." Ha ha ha ha ha ha! What an absolute misinformed ignorant b!tch!

  • jwdupreez - 2012-11-16 06:32

Amazing - to say the least!!!! recall an answer is like admitting that even they themselves find the lies to pathetic to believe. Just like Zuma's attempt to make SA believe that his thieving family paid for his brothel at Nkandla......My WORD...What next?????

  • quarty.vanzyl - 2012-11-16 07:34

the speaker will study the remark for the next 10 years.

  • quarty.vanzyl - 2012-11-16 07:48

I will give my right arm to know that report disclosed

  • stephanie.sutherland41 - 2012-11-16 08:34

Its easy, all squadrons keep records of all flights and passengers, and since its a Cape squadron, it would be flying from 35 Sqn under the 110 Sqn callsigns. 110 is the private pilots that make their plane available to the airforce for VIP flights. They are based with 35 Sqn, who are a longrange fixed wing squadron. Go check the logs at the squadron hahahahaha

  • hugh.olphart - 2012-11-16 10:03

We left the SANDF in a better state of health than it has EVER been before. hahahahahaha

  • emily.strydom.9 - 2012-11-16 11:52

Guys we can rant and rave about the waste of our tax money but nothing will change. The ANC government will continue to waste money on luxuries and lining their pockets. I am so sad that the New South africa is going to the dogs. it breaks my heart. I really thought the ANC will be lenient to us and that they would try and right the wrongs of the past but alas it is now even worse. How many people are dying of hunger in this country. Companies and churches and other organizations are trying to help feeding these people and our government is using money that could have been used for upliftment of their own people, It is indeed a sad day

  • niel.phillips.7 - 2012-11-16 11:53

is she also going to retract her stupid statement to the flea infested member of the da

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-11-16 14:23

Left the SANDF in a better state of health than it has ever been before???? Sisulu! What planet are you on??? Our defence force went on strike while you were in charge. If a war broke out now our defence force would get wiped out within minutes as they are over weight and do nothing. U Sisulu are a disgrace and show no shame for your over spending on you high life. The DA must push for a case of enquiry to be opened up.
