Bloemfontein - Details should be given about a memorandum signed by the Free State government and the Uttar Pradesh government in India, the Democratic Alliance said on Tuesday.

Free State DA leader Patricia Kopane said a formal request to this effect had been submitted to Premier Ace Magashule.

The DA wanted detail on Magashule’s role in the controversial landing of the Gupta wedding plane at Waterkloof military air base.

Kopane said Magashule should produce the Free State government's invitation letter to the minister of public works and irrigation Shivpal Singh Yadav which secured diplomatic permission for the plane to land.

On Tuesday, the Indian High Commission said in a statement senior Indian officials and their delegations were in South Africa for bilateral engagements with the Free State government.

Kopane said a record of the discussion that took place on the Indian minister's visit to the Free State should also be released.

Other information the DA requested were records of where the minister stayed in Bloemfontein, who he met with and where the meetings took place.

The opposition party also wants the memorandum that was signed between the minister and the Free State government.

Kopane said if the Free State government was unable to produce the documents it might prove Magashule used his power to benefit the Gupta family.

Comment from Magashule’s office could not be immediately obtained.
