Johannesburg - Black Like Me founder Herman Mashaba came out publicly on Thursday to endorse DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane to lead, saying it came at a time when leadership in the country was lacking.

"In all the years I have known Mmusi, he has demonstrated his keen allegiance to the country and its people. He has pledged himself to developing entrepreneurship and job creation, which are the key drivers of economic success," he said in a statement.

"Maimane’s bid for leadership comes at a time when leadership in South Africa is sorely lacking.

Mashaba joined the DA in March last year.

He said he believed Maimane would strengthen the DA and would be an asset to rebuilding the nation.

This is another public endorsement for Maimane who has the official support of DA Western Cape leader Patricia De Lille, Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip, and 144 Gauteng officials which included provincial legislature Chief Whip Mike Moriarty, Gauteng chairperson Solly Msimanga, and MPs Glynnis Breytenbach, Dion George, Marius Redelinghuys, Anchen Dreyer, Thomas Walters and Bridget Masango.

Current DA federal chairperson Wilmot James, who is also standing for the position of federal leader following Helen Zille's announcement that she will not be standing for re-election, has not made his endorsements public yet.

On Wednesday, DA MP David Maynier, who is running James's campaign said his endorsements would be made public in the last phase of the campaign.
