By-elections planned in four provinces

Johannesburg - Municipal ward by-elections will be held in four provinces, the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Kate Bapela said by-elections would be held in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga, and the Northern Cape on Wednesday.

"By-elections will be held in six wards - all of which were previously represented by the African National Congress."

There would be 16 candidates representing five political parties and three independent candidates. One ward was uncontested.

Two by-elections were scheduled for the Eastern Cape of which one was uncontested.

Ward 31 in the Buffalo City metro would be contested by four candidates.

The ward became vacant after the expulsion of the councillor.

Ward two in the Ngqushwa [Peddie] municipality was uncontested. Nomatjamani Florence Coto of the ANC was the only candidate.

The ward became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Two by-elections would take place in the Free State. Ward three in the Letsemeng [Koffiefontein] municipality would be contested by four candidates. The ward became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Ward 16 in the Matjhabeng [Welkom] municipality would be contested by Mohau Jaftor Sothoane, an independent candidate, and Tlaleng Selina Meli of the ANC.

The ward became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

In Mpumalanga there was one by-election for Ward 28 in the Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] municipality.

The ANC and the DA were competing for control of the ward. The ward became vacant following the death of the councillor.

The Northern Cape would also have one by-election in Ward 3 in the Tsantsabane [Postmasburg] municipality.

Three candidates would contest the by-election.

The ward became vacant after the death of the councillor.

Voting stations were expected to be open from 07:00 to 21:00.
