Johannesburg - ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa's comments about newly formed political parties undermined democracy, the Christian Democratic Party said on Monday.

"The comments made by Cyril Ramaphosa... appear to be a cowardly attempt to undermine our multiparty democracy," CDP leader Theunis Botha said in a statement.

"After all, the present government should be supporting the Constitution and not encourage a one-party dictatorship."

On Sunday, Ramaphosa told supporters at the launch of the African National Congress's Gauteng provincial manifesto that newly formed political parties did not have the capacity to run the administration of the country.

"Our achievements demonstrate that the ANC is the only organisation that has the ability, experience and commitment to lead the ongoing struggle for a better life for all. We have the experience, we are not mafikizolo (newcomers)," he said.

"They arrive today and they think they can hoodwink the people of South Africa saying they can run South Africa better. We know they won't have the experience, ability and capacity to do so."

Botha said the statement that the ANC was the only party which had capacity to run the administration of the country was questionable.

Had the ANC run the country properly there would have been well established officialdom and strong department heads by now which would have meant that any party taking over the running of the country would be able to continue government's work, he said.

"What the different parties bring to the table are unique ideologies, beliefs and principles. It is when a party is corrupt, ignorant and unable to understand what it means to govern that we have the present situation," said Botha.

"For Mr Ramaphosa to speak the way he does shows ignorance, bordering on foolishness."
